The face of an SM glancing at the Active Cue cart in QLab, and accepting that a bluetooth speaker connection may have failed. (It was just slow) So much could have gone wrong yesterday. Everything went right. I am so grateful and feel so loved.

Current plan is a tiny Bluetooth keyboard + hotkeys in QLab. Will be experimenting soon with OSC control for OBS. Excited for other applications if this works.

Everyone's really trying to push the "no ethical consumption" into every corner of our lives, huh? It's so telling that they launch these features as On by default.

I also have iPads and physical Stream Decks but size / cabling then becomes more of an issue. Outdoor venue. Operator in the audience. TIA!

Question : Easiest way to run 3 music cues from the smallest/simplest device? I'm thinking Go Button but don't have a spare iPhone kicking around. Maybe the Stream Deck app? I have a spare Pixel 3a. Operator is a former SM but won't have access to the device until briefly before the event.

Just used my first tap ticket to get into the metro. Didn't need to have the Chrono app open. So excited to not have to carry a separate card with me anymore!

Like, I can tell his software has some imperfections in the breakdowns but fixing those gaps isn't exactly passion-project material. I imagine QLab knockoffs can do lots of the bits well, but the gaps will matter to those of us accustomed to the full package.

AI is inevitable. What society hasn't accounted for is that it is replacing entry-level tasks, thereby hampering career pivots (and career starts, for many grads with more topical knowledge than mid-life entrants). We live in interesting times.

This was a passion project which couldn't pay me terribly much, so I'm not going hungry for it. But it does require re-examining my plans to fill gaps in my work as local arts funding continues to shrink and smaller seasons filled with co-pros become the norm.

Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 07/09/2026
If I were further into my career in the field I could use these tools to take on more projects, but at this early point in my attempted career pivot, I'm little better than the machine and wouldn't know how to leverage it. Entry-level work is being automated, and society needs to adapt.

We'll probably rage against our AI agents' quirks the way we rage against printers today. But nobody's going back to typesetting outside niche art applications. So why go back to a human project manager who'd take weeks of part-time work to produce similar results?

Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 07/09/2026
He didn't mean to replace me. He thought he was showing me an amazing tool that would make my job easier. I could have taken it, spent a few hours nudging deadlines and making corrections, and said nothing. But I felt like a typesetter being shown a home printer.

I had asked what tasks would remain for me, and it amounted to sending reminder e-mails and taking meeting notes. Both of which even I could automate. We ended the meeting with the intent to find me purpose in the project, but my value-add isn't what it once was.

This Labour Day I was presented a vibe-coded project management package built from the creator's extensive collection of notes and AI history. It had broken everything down into steps, deadlines, and much of the work I would have done myself. I recused myself, despite enthusiasm for the project.

Same storm soaked me through between the door and the car in Cornwall. Lots of lightning, power out, but no notifications. I'm bracing for drench #2 when I disembark in Montreal, though I am hoping the train is outrunning it.

But I really feel like I'm contemplating a break-up of a 20+ year relationship, extracting myself from an organization which chose to remove "don't be evil" from its mandate. They have amazing products. Often best-in-class. Choosing alternatives would suck. I wish they could have stayed golden. •

I'm on Android, but could accept a shift to iOS. I could set up an e-mail forwarding client, especially since I managed to acquire lastname dot ca. I could return to offline offerings for docs and sheets. I hear MapQuest learned the Great Lakes' names in school and won't be changing them. ↓

And then there's Drive. I was using OpenOffice before Docs and Sheets, but my entire career effectively now lives on my Drive, and has for over a decade. I've been such a user and supporter of Google over the years, but they've been failing me a lot lately. ↓

Their calendar is critical to me, with varying contracts throughout the year. I still sometimes use it to set reminders, though Keep is what I prefer for those. It also hosts our household grocery list and dozens of story concepts. I often use it for quick doodles to refine a physical concept. ↓

When Google Video was outperformed by YouTube, they bought it. They funded educational channels like SciShow and Crash Course. And it's one of the few subscriptions I still pay for. Heck, we moved our streams off Twitch to YT within the past year. ↓

Google Books was such a noble quest to document and log humanity's body of work. I made Google Sites using HTML back in the day and still use the service for simple builds. I quite liked the concept of Google+ with the different viewer-groups for posts. I still think it's a good idea. ↓

Maps was outstanding at the time, but they had room for whimsy: entering destinations on separate continents prompted you to swim across the ocean. Adding Street View was incredible. I've often used it to better understand a destination, and Geoguessr is good fun. ↓

I remember getting my invite to Gmail and using the invites to create additional accounts - two of these are still in use today (first initial dot last name + a junk mail account). Seeing the extra storage tick up on the login page was so impressive. I was such a fan of Google for a long time. ↓

Or apparently soon-to-be champions. Ant1 showed up in-person and then went back home to place 1st in this weekend's online championship. (Yes you can play the exact same game online for free, but I'm heavily biased in favour of meatspace Netrunner)

Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 30/08/2026
Many of my games yesterday came down to final turns on both sides: either the runner steals the agenda for the win, or the corp scores and wins next turn. Sometimes I had it, sometimes I was just a Click or Credit short. But boy does it feel good when you have just enough.

Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 30/08/2026
Netrunner is a really fun game, it has no card scarcity, and you can proxy your entire decks even at the world championship (Oct 2-4 in Montréal!). But the real secret ingredient is the community. It's always an absolute joy to play, be they fresh faces or former champions.

Transit timing happened to work out with an EXO train! This means today I rode the Montreal commuter rail trifecta: REM + Metro + Exo. All using the same transit fare ♥ Might take a VIA train next week to really cap it off (because I'll be heading to another town, not just for funsies).

Even the folks over on r/fuckcars are okay with ambulance and fire trucks, I presume (I don't go there). Outsiders are going to be inconsistent on whether they see usage like yours as a sports car, pickup, or sedan. (Even the most AI-pilled I've spoken to don't presume to be electric-equivalent)

Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 24/08/2026
Mostly, yes! I've seen a lot of really cool features for individual use, but don't feel their benefit is outweighed by their impact. (Like how I don't drive) I also see important uses for society which I am happy are being implemented. (Like how ambulances and freight are needed)

And you should enjoy AI if you want to! I just hope this has provided some insight into the nuances of what people mean when they take an anti-AI stance. The internet is plagued by black-and-white takes, and these spaces encourage it.

It really read like you'd taken assets from a previously-hired designer and made the app to save you time and money on making new posters going forward, even upon re-reading it today. Many users would, and have, and do. Sorry for misunderstanding you on this!

Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 24/08/2026
There's a fundamental disagreement on the cost-benefit that at this time is irreconcilable. Enjoy your cool toy! Others don't have to like it as much as you do, and that doesn't make them objectively wrong. I'm sorry you feel ostracized for using something so successful and popular.

They need to figure out how to replace their aged computer and find a job in a shrinking market and feed themselves as fields dry out and burn. Your friend doesn't need AI for bureaucracy. He needs to live in a society where his mother gets the care she needs without going bankrupt.

Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 24/08/2026
But a lot of others - the majority in my discussions - are resisting the pull of convenience because of the negative impacts. They don't need to hear how you vibe-coded a large-scale poster-generator for the Voxel rather than paying an artist to create the templates in your software of choice.

Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 24/08/2026
We don't need to be using AI for everything at all times just because it's quick and convenient. The "fuck AI" crowd isn't the colloquial "Luddite" crowd you imply. Yes, they exist. They're also terrible with non-AI machines and called VCRs "Big Brother". They could use your help to understand.

I'm not curing diseases or improving infrastructure. I take public transit everywhere, despite working odd hours all over. I don't yell at people in cars, but I do question friends who don't ever use transit here, and would certainly fight one who stood around saying more people should buy cars.

Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 24/08/2026
That's unfortunately not how it comes across. It reads as "AI is good, actually, so stop criticizing it." At least once a week I pause and consider that my current task might be faster with AI. Then I resume, because my time isn't worth the current impact.
100
Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 24/08/2026
So why do you need to tell everyone how great it is, since it's already everywhere? What don't you think people are seeing? What part of their concerns are wrong? You're telling the Luddites how much good can be done with more affordable textiles. The machines and their owners don't need the help.
100
Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 24/08/2026
You don't see those merits outweighing the environmental cost. A lot of people see AI that way, and therein lies the gulf which divides popular opinion. You see its potential but don't consider the current costs too great.
100
Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 24/08/2026
You just posted about Bitcoin being pointless, but a peer-to-peer currency without government oversight and extremely tiny fees is an enormous concept with great merit! It is genuinely transformative and useful in at least some contexts. But it also burns through energy for useless applications.
200
Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 24/08/2026
But Google *is* pushing summaries on everyone using Drive. That *is* silly and useless. There are thousands of kilowatt hours being wasted away because they want to give everyone a little taste to try to earn brand loyalty. This is the problem most people have with AI, not its idealized potential.
200
Kate @zen.r0b0.ca · 24/08/2026
The Luddites weren't interested in discussing all the benefits of cheaper fabrics. Many today aren't interested in discussing the benefits of AI. Then and now, people are fighting against being treated as expendable, because that's the actual dream being sold right now: labour *cost* savings.
