It's not a "new direction" at all.

I do wish designers would learn about the history of HCI because there are dozens if not hundreds of versions of this since at least the mid 1990s :( goes back at least to Wellner's digital desk of 1993

Yeah, they ruined the site, made search impossible in the EU, and have dramatically raised prices. Only thing I have found comparable are peertube instances, but I haven't found one that has the same community. I'm so frustrated that vimeo completely destroyed the community that helped build it.

There's quite a resonance with the OG blue marble photograph, especially the cloud formation coming off the east coast of southern Africa.

Nothing like trying to get complex PCBs finished and ready to send off a couple of weeks before your art installation opens.
EMITTERE, a PCB for controlling WS2813 light strips, playback of audio from SD cards, and reading signals from a magnetometer, among other thingsAETHERWAVES, a module for controlling an SI4732 radio chip

This board (and its pair) are wide enough on their own, which is why I started with them...but oof one cornwr was 4-5mm lower than the others which has meant quite a workout tonight. Plus, I should sharpen my irons :)

I have a lot of rough sawn lumber to deal with for this project, but luckily the stargazing "chair" building is super simple...some edge laminations (because we don't easily have wide enough boards here in Europe), just a few saw cuts and one mortise to chop for each chair. Onward!

It's nice to be making shavings again, but remind me why I don't have a thickness planer and jointer again? (Right, I hate the noise, they're expensive, this method gives me a workout, a mega workout, and I want to keep all my appendages.)
Cherry board that is almost planed clean of rough sawmill cuts, some wooden planes, and some shavings at the end.

Oh wow, I definitely look forward to this, as someone who is fascinated by this history, especially those uncomfortable aspects--like Parsons' practice--that are all too often left out of the discussion. (I say this as I went to Caltech and didn't learn about Parsons until decades after graduating.)

TFW you learn that on the PCB you just got back that you actually chose to use a pin that needed to do PWM that does not actually do PWM, and that you did the most rookie of rookie mistakes of swapping RX and TX in your UART. That was a lot of money wasted...oops.

I think in an age of slop and hallucinations it's incumbent upon us to "show our work", create link trails, and rebuild something of an edifice of shared reality. "Yes, I did this, with these people, at this time, and these are facts."

I've had links in my CV, well, ever since I started having a CV. These links go to my articles (because if it has a DOI or URL, there's no reason to not link to it), my artworks (which go to my website), and awards (to prove to people I'm not making it up).

And so the boards are now all stickered and I wait a few days, clean up the rough faces and edges, laminate some boards together for width, and get to what will actually be the easy part, making the chairs themselves.

Indeed. I should put "artist" in quotes as well. Creating an Indigenous "artist" out of thin air who supposedly works on Indigenous futures cheapens the work of the hundreds, if not thousands or tens of thousands, of other artists who do this work already.

Adriana Knouf, PhD @zeitkunst.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt. I looked all over the website to see if there were any mentions of working with Aboriginal groups when creating this artist, or any acknowledgment of the complexity at work. I didn't see anything. I would love to be corrected if wrong.

Yeah. It is. I wonder how it ever got started, how it got funded, and how Ars decided it was something they wanted to include on their program.

Adriana Knouf, PhD @zeitkunst.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
There are even more problems with the other "artists", but from my perspective this is the most egregious example.

(If it's not clear: TEKS "created" a set of 10 AI "artists", of different races, including an Aboriginal one, parroting their voices and their "artworks", creating "Indigenous futures" as they call them. Yes, you read that right.)

I've never seen such an effort to censor a document as I have the Amnesty International report on gender critical groups because of JK Rowling. They removed the report from the Wayback Machine and now I got a DMCA strike on my Google Drive for having it. It was deleted and removed from my account.
A screenshot of an email viewed in dark mode with the subject line "Google DMCA Violation." The email from Google informs the recipient that they have received a notification under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that some of their materials allegedly infringe on copyrights. It explains the removal process, mentions that notice details will be posted on Lumen, warns against repeated violations, and lists one affected Google Drive URL at the bottomA nearly identical mobile browser screenshot of the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. It shows a search for the same Amnesty International UK resources URL, resulting in the same message: "This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine."A mobile browser screenshot of the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. Everything from the use of "fibers" and mixing different types of fibers together, to suspending those fibers in water, to slicing the fibers up in something that looks a lot like a Hollander, to pressing the water out in a hydraulic press like I've used in a papermaking studio. Wild: youtu.

Looks like MIT Press is promoting an essay I wrote almost 20 years ago...and that needed an addendum in 2019 because I, uh, had made a major change in my life. I don't talk much publicly about my sister Robin--which will change someday--but this gives you some insight into her life and impact.

Here's a first: getting AI-fueled author spam to join a "CBC radio" program for a book I wrote in *2016*. Try harder AI...you expect me to believe someone wants to interview me on my specialized academic book from *10* years ago?!? That's funny :)

And the issue is that the funding opportunities are not increasing while the educational system (art academies, etc) continues to graduate more people, who are also extremely talented. So the competition goes up every year and the chances decrease. I've seen this happen in my 6 years here already.
