When a Q that actually resembles more recent Dem talking points is posed, it gets 61% approval. So the headline—based on some of the more misleading polling Qs—distracts from the insight that voters DO care about stopping Trump's unchecked power grab, at home and abroad.
Sixty-one percent of Americans, though, indicated that they would be receptive to an overtly anti-Trump message from Democrats along the lines of:

Suppose the Democrats say we need to stop Donald Trump. He is a runaway dictator,
and we need a check on his power by returning the Congress to the Democrats. His
tariffs are increasing prices, and he is off on foreign adventures.

"Dead heat" sounds bad, but the poll Qs are deceptive. Did Center for American Political Studies at Harvard, the Harris Poll, & HarrisX consult *any* Dems when they pitched this Q? The Dem platform isn't just 'free everything'! (the poll captured GOP messaging well, though—interesting)
When presented with the following hypothetical campaign message from the GOP, 54% of respondents said they found it “believable”:

Republicans say that they are returning responsibility to government by arresting criminals, closing the borders, keeping tax es low, and lowering energy costs. We can’t go back to the Democrats who were allowing our cities and way of life to deteriorate and prices on energy and food to soar while fraud took billions and billions of dollars of their giveaway programs.Just 48% of respondents, meanwhile, said they found this hypothetical message from Democrats credible:

Democrats say we are for affordability. Free government services. Free housing and transportation. Healthcare for all. Free student loans. We have the money and can provide these services if you elect us to office and we will bring down the billionaires

Hegseth threatened to withdraw military support unless the Scouts demonstrated ideological conformity with the Trump agenda. Unsurprisingly, this includes anti-trans membership and bathroom policies. And no more "Citizenship in Society," it's too woke!
Screenshot of "Citizenship in Society" merit badge offered by the Scouts prior to Pete Hegseth's threats to withdraw military support unless the organization demonstrated ideological conformity with the Trump agenda. The round fabric badge pictured has an outline of a hand making the three-finger Scout salute over red, white, and blue stripes. Planet Earth is inside the palm of the hand. A label across the top of the image reads "Eagle Required."
Pop-up window showing "Citizenship in Society Merit Badge" will be discontinued effective Friday, February 27th, 2026. Beginning on February 27th, 2026, Scouts will no longer be able to start requirements on the Citizenship in Society Merit Badge. Users can click to view an update.

~400 days in, Trump's net approval rating is underwater even in lots of states that voted for him (full stats of each state in alt text). I mean, he's lost Mississippi! Alaska! Both Carolinas! TEXAS! It's bad and I don't think it's getting any better.
Trump's Net Approval Rating by state in descending order based on YouGov polling as reported in The Economist:

Idaho +28.0%; Wyoming +21.9%; West Virginia +16.4%; North Dakota +9.7%; Tennessee +5.1%; Montana +3.8%; Alabama +3.0%; Oklahoma +3.0%; Arkansas +2.4%; Utah +1.5%; Louisiana -1.6%; South Dakota -1.9%; Mississippi -3.0%; Nebraska -3.5%; Kentucky -3.6%; Missouri -4.9%; Florida -6.7%; Kansas -7.7%; Alaska -8.8%; South Carolina -9.2%; Iowa -10.9%; Indiana -11.1%; North Carolina -11.9%; Ohio -13.1%; Arizona -14.1%; Virginia -16.1%; Nevada -16.4%; Michigan -16.7%; Texas -16.7%; Georgia -17.9%; New Hampshire -18.2%; Wisconsin -18.8%; Pennsylvania -19.4%; Minnesota -21.3%; New Jersey -22.3%; Maine -23.0%; Delaware -23.4%; New York -25.9%; Colorado -26.4%; California -27.0%; Oregon -29.4%; Massachusetts -30.2%; New Mexico -31.2%; Rhode Island -32.6%; Connecticut -33.4%; Illinois -34.1%; Washington -35.2%; Hawaii -37.8%; Maryland -38.1%; Vermont -42.0%; Washington, D.C. -77.7%

Evergreen reminder that FCC chair Carr is the Trump Pinhead (guy who wore the gold Trump lapel pin). He's not exactly impartial on this subject...

The Kansas City Defender notes the victory "belongs to every single person who showed up in the cold, who walked out of class, who closed their shop... who trained their neighbors on their constitutional rights, who made phone calls, who refused to look away."
Screenshot of Kansas City Defender article: "Let us be absolutely clear about what happened here: the people of Kansas City forced Platform Ventures’ hand.

This was not a corporate change of heart. This was not Platform Ventures suddenly discovering a conscience after secretly negotiating to hand over a publicly subsidized, $80 million warehouse to be converted into a 7,500-bed concentration camp. Ultimately, it was a calculated business decision made under extraordinary pressure from a community that refused to be complicit in the machinery of mass incarceration and deportation."

sure this all comes as a huge surprise, the "Mass Deportations Now!" signs didn't give you a clue huh

I've seen the Minneapolis police chief Brian O'Hara make some reasonably measured statements, but the MN Fraternal Order of Police immediately put out a pro-ICE statement. I'm sure Jonathan Ross has many supporters among MN cops.
January 8, 2026
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

“FOP Stands with ICE”
Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police Condemns Rhetoric

(Minneapolis, MN) The Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police stands with the men and women of Law Enforcement across the country. Over the past month, while Federal law enforcement has been doing their job in Minnesota, political and community leaders have condemned and vilified them.

The hateful and anti-law enforcement rhetoric by Mayor Frey and other politicians have made their jobs and those of local and state law enforcement more difficult and dangerous. The job of law enforcement is difficult and dangerous enough without the agitation by leaders in our state and communities.

When citizens are accused of a crime, they are given the presumption of innocence as afforded by due process. When there is an incident involving law enforcement, politicians and activists immediately condemn those involved and are scrambling for sound bites. They do not afford them the same due process but rather convict them in a public court of opinion while an investigation is barely beginning.

The Minnesota Fraternal Order of Police condemns these attacks on law enforcement and calls on politicians and leaders to stop the anti-law enforcement rhetoric and to ask for calm while the facts come out. #FOPSTRONG National Fraternal Order of Police

The National Fraternal Order of Police is the oldest and largest law enforcement organization in the United States, with more than 382,000 members.

The MN police have made it clear that they will stand with ICE over MN residents. So I'm not sure it would even matter if Frey deployed the police.

The Atlantic sure can be confusing sometimes...
Two "Top Stories" with contradictory headlines featured in The Atlantic in a 24 hour period: "What Bari Weiss Got Right" and "Stop Defending Bari Weiss"

Technofascism observers, if you're not familiar with the world of LAZARUS, you absolutely should be! Great time to start this series, with new issues coming out now so you won't have to wait years on a cliffhanger. Many parallels to our current authoritarian hellscape, but far more entertaining!
Cover art of the dystopian sci-fi series LAZARUS: FALLEN #1 by Image Comics showing a woman clothed in black gripping a bloodstained sword. Blood is smudged on her forehead, and her expression is confrontational as she stares ahead unflinchingly. The comic is written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Michael Lark.

People magazine has been surprisingly (to me) on top of these kinds of stories lately. ICE raids and other immigration horror stories, the Epstein saga, etc.
Screenshot of People Magazine story. Trump is pictured pointing his finger angrily at an offsceeen reporter. The headline reads, "Donald Trump Snaps at Female Reporter Who Asks About Epstein Files: 'Quiet Piggy'"

"fluid mingling of politics with profit" WHAT @nytimes.com are you familiar with the word "corruption" and can you please use it in a sentence? In like *all* the sentences describing Trump's illegal self-dealing as president?
New York Times screenshot showing the paper's signature downplaying of Trump's corruption: "During the same visit, Mr. Trump toured a Saudi government-owned real estate project called Diriyah. The Trump Organization is in talks that could bring a Trump-branded property to Diriyah, the project’s chief executive told The Times — the latest example of the Trump family’s fluid mingling of politics with profit."

The NYT lede was framed well: "Trump Tells Top Brass US Cities Should Be Military Training Grounds" but when I click on the story in the app, it's replaced with this sanewashed, sterile headline about "Familiar Partisan Complaints," which is closer to the Post's. So they get half credit.
NYT headline reads "Trump and Hegseth Recount Familiar Partisan Complaints to Top Military Leaders"

Not sure about here on bluesky, but Newsom definitely posted on X. I think maybe it doesn't show up in a search because he didn't specifically mention her by name, instead linking to the video of Walz during a press conference.
Gavin Newsom's X account screenshot with condolences for Melissa Hortman: "This is appalling. Lawmakers are now being shot and assassinated — targeted for their political beliefs.

We pray for their families. We grieve with Minnesota. We call for peace in our politics."
