I was bullied at school. I have as much contempt for the students around me who let it happen as for the bullies themselves. After years, one girl intervened. And it stopped. When we talk about bullying at school, I tell students that NOT being a bully isn't enough.

“If your concern for women disappears the moment accountability becomes socially inconvenient, then protection was never the principle to begin with. Performance was.”

If you can't work out the answers to these questions, you won't be able to work out how to solve the problems.

Why the questioning headline - either Australia is a global pioneer or it isn't. You should be able to state which it is. (Look out the window and see if it's raining...)

Parents can set up social media accounts for kids - doing so means they can monitor them. And the whole idea is that kids still have access to social media where the platform is deemed safe. That encourages other platforms to prove that they're also becoming safe enough for children.
000
Zuvele @zeddog.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Which is the problem governments are trying to deal with. And we do protect children from danger in multiple areas.
010
Zuvele @zeddog.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
And maybe we can do more than one thing at once. We tend to take this approach with most things - we protect children whilst we're teaching them about possible harms, and then, once we've done that, we give them more freedom. We don't give them the keys to the car and THEN talk about road safety.

So out of a long, considered thread, you seize on three words and decide that's the take home message? How lazy of you.
010
Zuvele @zeddog.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
That way legislation is clearly necessary and is not an overreach. Politicians don't have any more access to crystal balls than anyone else. Pioneering means venturing into the unknown.
000
Zuvele @zeddog.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Not what I said. What I said was that's how legislation progresses. As it becomes clear that those being legislated are not meeting their responsibilities, you put more restrictions upon them. But you start off believing them when they say yes, we can and will control this.
110
Zuvele @zeddog.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Thus the use of the word 'pioneer'. You head into unchartered territory. Precisely because that's what it is, you expect to have to alter your plans. That doesn't equal failure. In fact, it's common sense.

Zuvele @zeddog.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
In this case, the onus was never on children to stop using social media. It was on the social media providers to stop them. That's why the children aren't penalised for using social media, the providers are. Their failure to comply with the legislation strengthens the hand of government.

And that's a misunderstanding of the policy and its intent. Action progresses in stages. Organisations are given a chance to prove that what they're proposing works and they can fulfill their commitments. When it's shown they can't then governments can move to the next stage.

Got an email from Angus. He says Labor’s policy on migration isn’t as good as Angus’ policy on migration, which hasn’t been decided yet, but at least Angus has a plan and Labor hasn’t. #auspol

I travelled - with my family - from Melbourne to Sydney on several occasions as a child in the sixties for this very reason. My mother's eye condition was so rare there was only one specialist in the country she could see. The final surgery WAS world leading..but could only happen in Sydney.
010
Zuvele @zeddog.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
If I'm a world class eye specialist I'm not setting up shop in Albury, because I'll barely scrape a living. I'm in Sydney or Melbourne and the (rare) out of area patient is coming to me.
110
Zuvele @zeddog.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
So, if I specialise in an area which affects 1 in 10000 people a year (quite a large number) I see 20 patients here. If I'm in Melbourne, I see 600. You don't have to have much wrong with you to find yourself headed to Melbourne.

Zuvele @zeddog.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
The population is too small for a lot of things.. the common cry up my way is "Why can't we have a world class hospital? Why do we have to go to Melbourne for treatment?" The answer is that Melbourne's catchment is around 6 million people. Ours is 200,000.

'But that is still a long way above the 0.36% rate in 2018-19 and substantially higher than the pre-pandemic average of about 0.4%.' It's 0.5. Not a tidal wave.

'While the raw insolvency numbers look dramatic, the picture is less dire when assessed relative to the number of firms... By this measure, insolvencies as a share of operating businesses was 0.5% in the most recent financial year, or about 1 in 200.' From the article.

When you think of how long most women spend on their outfits, the fact that they get virtually no compliments on them sucks. I had the same experience with a woman on the beach.

Zuvele @zeddog.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
My life changed when I learned how to accept compliments. Laughing them off 'oh, this old thing?" is insulting. Thank them for the compliment, it's taken an effort.

States can - the Constitution gives them absolute power over certain areas. If he wasn't going to try at all, he wouldn't have put it on the table, knowing that failure would work against him.

Have you READ the article? The only evidence it provides for these claims is one person hypothesising and facebook posts. It reports that more people have complained about the algorithm than complained about it before it existed. Meanwhile, vastly more people are having their assessments approved.

New study finds that the rapid growth of electric vehicles in China has prevented over 300,000 premature deaths. Conversely -- and this is just math -- everything done to prevent the rise of EVs in the US leads to more preventable deaths of Americans. It's not an academic debate.
