In 2005 Honda was one of the first to do this IIRC. On the Accord V6 hybrid they added a motor to the compressor. When the V6 turned off the compressor's motor would draw from the battery instead and keep the AC running! You can spot the high voltage orange cables coming off the housing this photo.

Our 2026 CX-50 had to go in for a fix and they gave us one of these as a loaner. The interior is such a massive downgrade OMG, and not a fan of removing the Mazda badge everywhere but the front.

Got home from work yesterday and the parent's whip got upgraded to a blue CX-50 hybrid. Wow it's so much nicer than the old Outback, Mazda is amazing with the finer details. And OMG it has ventilated seats which is the best thing ever. First car in the family with a sunroof too, very odd experience.

Other than a torque wrench i replaced my head with basic hand tools over like 3 days and drove it 30 minutes home(parked at a friend's house). it's totally doable, just be prepared to replace ancient rubber hoses and i hope there is some way to remove the cam gear while keeping the chain in place.
