On the one hand, Alito and Thomas vote with Trump on just about everything. But arguably the biggest favor either could do him is retire tomorrow. Doesn't seem like they will.

Congress made it illegal for private companies to use the polygraph. They did that for a reason.

“If they beat us, then they can be really proud,” Trump said of Belgium in the Oval Office. “The other way, if they beat us, we’ll say it was — I say it was rigged, just like the election was rigged in 2020. But I won’t get into that.”

Trump also digressed, when asked about the red card incident in the Oval Office on Monday. He weaved from the World Cup to the Olympics to Joe Biden and the Fourth of July. He even threw in some election denialism.

Alito's "medieval" complaint about birthright citizenship is an incredible turn for a textualist movement that usually likes to talk about taking the Constitution as literally as possible. From yesterday's What Matters newsletter - www.cnn.com/newsletters/...

While the overriding story of the Supreme Court in recent years has been its deference to President Donald Trump in the furtherance of executive authority, Tuesday was a big exception to that rule.

Both things can be true. The Supreme Court did give Trump new power Monday. At the same time, he’s running out of time to use it. And despite his efforts to stack commissions and put supporters across the government, institutional guardrails still exist. www.cnn.com/newsletters/...
