My home town (Santa Barbara) closed the main drag through downtown (State Street) to cars during COVID. I visited recently. It’s absolutely booming.

What I see are people struggling like crazy to make it AT ALL, so things that require stability (like starting a family) seem impossible. Billionaires will never be paying their fair share or they wouldn’t be billionaires.

The funniest part being that if there was some kind of test and it was in any way fair, conservatives would fail in droves.

I have no context for this, but it is true for all communities. Just good advice, generally.

I had to look it up. Cromulent goes back to 1996, so it predates the common usage of impactful by more than a decade!
impactful(adj.)
"having much impact" in the psychological sense, by 1928, common from c. 2010, from impact (n.) + -ful. Related: Impactfully; impactfulness.

Does four years in a student coop count? I used to be very proficient at Robert’s Rules. I was even on the hiring committee, which was absolutely fascinating.

Interface Design Frustration: When Apple Passwords says “use password,” it means instead of a fingerprint or Face ID. When Google Password Manager says “use password,” it means “use this saved password?” The most frustrating part is how long it took me to figure that out.

That does make me realize that I’ve read the originals of the first two, but not Minority Report. I’ll have to add it to the stack.

Wife is on overnight business trip. I am in my home office. Where are the dogs? Laying right in front of the front door. You know these things about your pets, but it still hurts when it’s so obvious who the favorite is.

Same. I was actually going to see it in the theater. Now I’ll wait. I love Minority Report.

This tracks with the explosion of podcasts, right? I’ve always been more of a short story/article/comics/graphic novel reader. I realized a few years ago that I hadn’t read a book that wasn’t a graphic novel in years. But I had listened to many as audiobooks, some on Audible, some from the library.

For example, there are countries that are part of the ICC. If he went to one of those, he could, in theory, be arrested there. My point is not “He should be arrested IN AMERICA.” My point is that “he should be arrested.”

I guess I can separate the concepts of “the law” and “what should happen.” Laws are not always just and it is unfortunate that they aren’t in this circumstance. It doesn’t change what should happen.

Ahh, that makes sense. It could very easily be that the glorious Red Delicious of the past still exists and that’s what some people are still eating, or that a different one took over from a different region, etc. There is no “true” Red Delicious. It’s a fascinating piece of agricultural history.

TBC: You DON’T think he should be arrested for committing genocide? Well, I do. I think genocidal tyrants should be arrested. It’s unfortunate that in this circumstance it would go against the rule of law, but that doesn’t change what should happen to him, if not here and now.

But Apples don’t breed true. Every apple of a certain varietal is a clone of the original. If they were “bred” they would no longer be Red Delicious. Though the section on choice of rootstock is new information and could impact this if a new one became the standard en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple#:...

I literally just read this. I wonder if it’s different farm rootstock choice.
Because apples are not true breeders when planted as seeds, propagation usually involves grafting of cuttings. The rootstock used for the bottom of the graft can be selected to produce trees of a large variety of sizes, as well as changing the winter hardiness, insect and disease resistance, and soil preference of the resulting tree. Dwarf rootstocks can be used to produce very small trees (less than 3.0 m or 10 ft high at maturity), which bear fruit many years earlier in their life cycle than full size trees, and are easier to harvest.[47]

I’ve been told they’re always clones. They’re not grown from seeds. It’s tricky! I didn’t know this about the rootstock.
Many apples grow readily from seeds. However, apples must be propagated asexually to obtain cuttings with the characteristics of the parent. This is because seedling apples do not "breed true", instead they are "extreme heterozygotes", i.e. rather than resembling their parents, seedlings are all different from each other and from their parents.[45] Triploid cultivars have an additional reproductive barrier in that three sets of chromosomes cannot be divided evenly during meiosis, yielding unequal segregation of the chromosomes (aneuploids). Even in the case when a triploid plant can produce a seed (apples are an example), it occurs infrequently, and seedlings rarely survive.[46]Because apples are not true breeders when planted as seeds, propagation usually involves grafting of cuttings.

There’s a ton of heritage varieties that just don’t travel well, or are really only for baking or cider. They’re already out there, just not common. Try some new ones. They are good.

I am now seeing several or saying this. They actually made a bad apple worse! I’ve been told that all apples are clones. They don’t breed true. I would have to think that these are then sub-varietals if they were bred and not cloned. Any biologists/genetecists/farmers in here?

I was eating apples in the 70s, and even then I would eat any other apple, if available. If I’m not mistaken, they’re basically the poster child for that problem. It is what they always were. If you’re older than me, it’s possible you had other red apples that were still available back then.

I like Granny Smith and most other apples. I just find Red and Golden Delicious to be mealy-textured with little flavor other than “sweet and apple-like.”
