This Roman perfume bottle shaped like a bird is 2,000 years old, yet it looks like a modern design! 📷 Corning Museum of Glass glasscollection.cmog.org/objects/7194... #Archaeology
This photo by the Corning Museum of Glass shows a Roman perfume container made of transparent light blue glass in the shape of a bird. Seen in profile facing right, it has a long narrow beak inclined upwards. The head and neck are represented by single tubular element which merges with a plump, stylised body with a long, horizontal, tapering tail. Size: H 6 cm, L 11.7 cm. It is displayed against a grey background.

According to the museum, this bottle and others like it often contain powdered remnants of perfume. Glassmakers created the graceful bird shape by manipulating a glass bubble at the furnace. The bottle was filled with perfume and sealed over the fire. To use the perfume, its owner would crack the bird’s tail and reseal it after each use.

A digital illustration based on a photo of Tim Curry having a break between scenes filming the 90s TV version of IT. He’s standing in a wet, grassy field with a big blue blanket pulled around his shoulders. His right hand Is stuck out from the blanket holding an umbrella over his head. And his face is done up in full Pennywise evil clown makeup: white base, wide red mouth, bulbous red nose, blue eye coloring, curly drawn on brows, and a big frizzy red wig with a receding hairline. He’s also smoking a cigarette and looking introspective or else very bored. To his right is a lot of big smushed together pink lettering reading ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

Peony from Japanese Meiji Era Sketchbook
Originating from a Meiji-period (1868–1912) artist’s sketchbook (funponto or sōko), this intimate botanical study showcases the masterly observational technique (shasshin) central to late 19th-century Japanese painting and decorative textile design draftsmanship. Set upon a warm, aged washi paper ground, the composition presents tree peonies (botan) at distinct stages of artistic execution. In the lower left, a dramatic blossom is fully realized in velvety crimson and plum pigment washes, its deeply ruffled petals anchored by naturalistic olive-green foliage. Above and to the right, lighter line work reveals the underlying studio process: fine, fluid sumi ink contours define a lush double bloom, while a neighboring flower features delicate touches of vermillion and gold outlining its exposed stamens and carpels. Long revered as the "King of Flowers" (hyakka no ō) and a classic emblem of wealth and high honor, these varied line-and-color studies capture both the organic splendor of the peony and the spontaneous, analytical precision of Meiji studio practice.

Artist: Ito Shinsui Title: The Eyebrow Pencil Date: 1923–1933 Medium: Color Woodblock print
Created by the master Shin-hanga artist Itō Shinsui (1898–1972), this woodblock print titled "The Eyebrow Pencil" (Mayuzumi) captures a moment of feminine vanity and toilet preparations.

Set against a deep, rich crimson background, the composition focuses on a woman leaned forward in profile, carefully poising a red cosmetics pencil near her face as she gazes into an off-screen or partial mirror stand visible on the left. Her upper body is bare, with a blue casual yukata or robe featuring a yellow-and-white plaid pattern sloughed down to her waist. Her hair is neatly bound up and pulled back with a light headband to keep stray locks clear of her forehead. The print highlights Shinsui’s mastery of the bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women) genre, combining sensitive line work, delicate flesh tones, and a striking, bold color palette that emphasizes both elegance and intimacy.

By Japanese artist miki katoh,
A beautiful, atmospheric painting by the contemporary Japanese artist Miki Katoh, dated 2007, showcases her signature blend of Taishō-period nostalgia (Taishō Roman) and modern figurative illustration. The composition captures a young woman resting indoors on a quiet, snowy day, offering a marvelous study in avant-garde textile pairing and early 20th-century retro aesthetics. The subject is seated on a simple wooden chair, leaning her head dreamily onto her arm atop a plain wooden table where a hot cup of tea or coffee gently steams. Behind her, a large multi-paned window looks out onto a serene winter landscape, revealing the iconic red-brick facade of Tokyo Station softly blanketed by falling snow.

The young woman's styling is a masterful celebration of bold, graphic textile choices that contrast beautifully with her soft, contemporary short haircut and contemplative gaze. She wears a magnificent plum-purple outer garment draped loosely over her shoulders, adorned with large, stylized peony or rose blossoms in vibrant shades of saffron yellow, tangerine orange, and dusty blue. Beneath this outer layer is a highly striking kimono defined by bold, playful vertical stripes of turquoise, mustard yellow, and rose pink. This striped fabric is further punctuated by large circular medallions containing dense bouquets of delicate, multicolored wildflowers.

Finishing her ensemble with meticulous attention to detail, she wears light tan, polka-dot tabi socks paired with traditional wooden geta sandals featuring brightly embroidered floral straps. The matte, delicately textured surface of the painting and its harmonious combination of historic architecture, western-style interior furnishings, and flamboyantly patterned dress create a deeply poetic narrative.

This woodblock print, was created in 1887 by the genius Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892). the historical rogue-turned-monk Fukami Jikyū (originally Fukami Jūza), a notorious 17th-century otokodate (street knight or gang leader) in Edo who later renounced his violent life.
This powerful composition depicts the historical figure Fukami Jikyū (originally Fukami Jūza), a notorious 17th-century otokodate (street knight or gang leader) in Edo who famously renounced his violent past to embrace a Buddhist monastic life.

The artwork captures Jikyū from behind in a dramatic, sweeping counter-pose as he walks through a shower of falling cherry blossom petals (sakura), turning his head to gaze wistfully over his shoulder at a bright full moon shining through soft, stylized blue clouds. The print perfectly illustrates Yoshitoshi’s unparalleled skill in combining intense psychological depth with extraordinary textile graphic design.

Jikyū’s voluminous robe is a true masterpiece of Edo-period sartorial expression, designed to reflect his larger-than-life, defiant persona. The body of the garment features a bold, dark charcoal-black and slate-grey checkered ichimatsu pattern. Layered over this geometric background are massive, brilliantly colored, stylized flower roundels. The petals are executed in vibrant shades of sage green, cerulean blue, and off-white, radiating from large crimson centers intricately detailed with dense, white grid lines (kanoko or stippled effect). The sheer scale of the floral design against the rigid checkers accentuates his imposing physical presence and the flamboyant style typical of Edo's street knights.

His hair is styled in a clean, sharp topknot, exposing a strong profile that balances a sense of rough masculinity with spiritual contemplation.

Artist: Komori Soseki Title: Moorhens Date: 1929 Medium: Color woodblock print Credit Line: Bruce Goff Archive, gift of Shin'enkan, Inc.
An intimate pair of moorhens wading in the center of the canvas. Sōseki positions the two waterfowl in close proximity, their rounded, plump silhouettes overlapping to create a powerful sense of quiet companionability amidst the elements. The bird on the left is captured leaning downward with its head tucked back in profile, while the bird on the right stands alert, its leg gently lifted out of the water. The woodblock printers have achieved a magnificent technical feat in texturing their plumage, utilizing a subtle bokashi (color gradation) that transitions from rich charcoal-black on their backs to a soft, smoky gray along their bellies. This dark coloration makes their sharp, angular orange-yellow beaks and small, ringed eyes pop with intense, lifelike vitality.

Framing the birds from above and below is a dramatic, oversized tapestry of decaying lotus leaves (hasu) that establishes an incredible sense of scale and seasonal transformation. Dominating the upper half of the canvas are several massive, overlapping lotus leaves, their fan-like veins radiating outward from pale green centers. Sōseki beautifully documents the natural life cycle of the flora; the rich, deep teal-green of the leaves is interrupted by irregular, mottled patches of warm ochre and burnt orange along the ragged, insect-bitten margins, signaling the transition into late summer or early autumn. A single, stylized pocket of pristine white light peeks through the right side, suggesting a small pool of rainwater trapped within a leaf's fold.

The water and atmospheric printing techniques transform this biological study into a deeply poetic meditation on weather. The water transitions from a pale, misty cerulean blue in the center to a deep, velvety indigo-blue along the lower margin, mimicking the profound depth of a natural pond. Disturbing this smooth mirror is a mesmerizing, rhythmic field of concentric white rings.

Artist: Kawase Hasui Title: Karikachi Mountain Pass (Karikachi toge) Date: 1922–1932 Medium: Color woodblock print; oban Credit Line: Gift of Oliver Statler
A highly dynamic celestial grid that dominates the upper half of the canvas. Hasui frames a brilliant full moon, left unprinted as the pure white of the paper ground, shining like a cold beacon through a jagged tear in the storm clouds. The surrounding clouds are printed in dense, layered tones of slate grey and charcoal, their billowing edges carved with a loose, expressive fluidity that mimics wet ink washes. Pockets of a deep, velvety indigo-blue night sky peek through the top and bottom of the cloud bank, enhanced by a flawless bokashi (color gradation) that transitions down to a pale, misty white horizon line, evoking the crisp, biting air of a high-altitude wilderness.

The lower and middle registers present a beautifully textured study of rugged terrain enduring the elements. The foreground showcases a steep, rocky hillside covered in melting patches of pristine white snow. Hasui utilizes unprinted negative space to represent the heavy snowdrifts, contrasting them sharply with the blocky, dark charcoal-grey and brown wood-grain textures of the exposed volcanic earth. Sprouting from this cold terrain are a few skeletal, leafless winter shrubs, their fine, intricate branches carved with needle-like precision. As the eye moves into the middle ground, the landscape transitions to a rolling ridge blanketed by dense, deep forest-green and teal foliage, mapping the resilient evergreen flora of northern Japan.

The deep background introduces a magnificent sense of cinematic distance and tectonic scale. Looming on the far left horizon is the faint, silhouetted pyramid of a distant mountain peak, accompanied by a soft, pale grey mountain range that fades delicately into the twilight mist.

The overall framing relies on an immersive, low-key color palette that brilliantly captures the cool, ambient glow of moonlight reflecting off a winter landscape.
