🆕 New preprint: Is “person = man” inevitable? In the matrilineal Mosuo, men and women imagined someone like themselves. In mainstream China, younger participants did too—but girls and women increasingly favored men with age. [osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/ejd76_v1] #NewPreprint

is quality software really valued in those industries, or is it more risk aversion once something battle-tested is built?

do you have any books that you recommend on organizational psychology like this?

i'm really relieved to see more prominent voices pushing back against RJ for sexual assault. the one crime that never has extenuating circumstances

no it does not imply that. good governance implies intelligent land use in this context

That’s not true. Digital systems can approximate analog systems to arbitrary levels of precision. Eg you could keep developing ever more and more high fidelity music formats but you will never capture all of a live performance

dressing too well can be sort of an anti signal in STEM--suggests you're more interested in what people think of you than being good at your job

zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
i think it depends on the field. like, i would not judge an engineer showing up to an interview with an iced coffee. i would be asking hard technical questions such as, what have you blown up recently? those social norms make more sense in fields where people skills are required

broadly speaking, texans choose sprawl over densification--isn't that a form of poor governance?

you can, in fact, if you bother, google the history of taiwan and see how many people he massacred once he got there. he only had to slaughter fewer people because taiwan has a much tinier population

the other reason this discourse is incredibly stupid is that pretty much anyone who succeeds in consolidating power to the extent mao did, turns into a paranoid authoritarian. this is a big reason chiang kai shek in a similar position may not have been better

zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
you said that south korea proves it's possible to accomplish the positives of what mao did without the devastation. i am pointing out it only accomplished that with the kind of help that would never have been available to china, for political reasons.

i think you can accept physicalism while rejecting functionalism. perhaps there are certain kinds of computations that only a biological substrate can accomplish. this is not a vitalist position either

yeah he was shitty. OTOH he knew how to win over people, and the KMT didn't. mao did a lot to prevent colonization and advance gender rights. hard to see CKS doing the same
000
zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
the KMT was in addition very corrupt, and interested in preserving the same pseudo-feudal relations that impoverished the peasantry. the communists made an effort to end prostitution, detox opium addicts, and stop crime. there's a reason the CCP won over so many people

i'm chinese and happy to own that mao killed millions of people through bad policy and also did a lot to modernize china. chiang kai shek was a shitty alternative. more obsessed with tamping down communists than fighting off the japanese. google xi'an incident
101
zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
he was, in addition, extremely right wing and opposed to feminism. once he got to taiwan, he murdered thousands of taiwanese and imposed martial law. if mao doesn't get credit for setting china on a good path, neither does CKS. taiwanese democracy only happened after he died

zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
the japanese were just as bad as the germans during wwii. one newspaper ran an article about a bayoneting contest the japanese soldiers had. big prize to whoever could shank the most chinese civilians. chiang kai shek was insane.

zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xi%27an... this is the guy all the white people think would have done a better job modernizing china. chiang kai shek wanted to keep murdering his fellow chinese more than he wanted to repel the japanese invaders. google unit 731 to see how evil they were

nooooo they don't, that's the answer. if the dan nexon in your replies is the dan nexon who's a professor at georgetown, i'm shocked that he's so freaking confident about the counterfactual that jiangjeshi would have been better. that's academic malpractice
010
zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
i'm not a mao supporter. my family suffered too much. but i think birb's point that mao is a complicated figure who was a better leader than chiang kai shek would have been shouldn't be that controversial

zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
you simply cannot say with a straight face that those three countries managed to prosper without the same tribulations that china did, without neglecting that foreign influence was directed towards building them up. china faced a much more hostile foreign policy front
110
zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
excuse me? all three countries received considerable foreign aid after wwii. from 1950-1965, foreign aid from the US represented about 9% of taiwan's GDP. south korea and japan also received considerable financial help
110
zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
i am also not loving how none of these white male haters of mao are acknowledging he was much better on gender than chiang kai-shek
010
zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
do you want to go on about why it would have been so much better if the KMT had won? you seem very confident that the life expectancy gains would have been much better, but it's hard to prove counterfactuals
001
zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
yeah my dad hates mao and even he has a more nuanced opinion. he respected mao as a general and acknowledges china needed modernization. lol

that's a good point. i think they're less interested in preventing things from getting worse. not as sexy. doesn't feel like you've made as much of an impact if what you did was force other people to leave a forest alone, as opposed to creating miniature nuclear plants

now you could take the original post as a sweeping dismissal of steinem, or you could absorb the contents and think, wow, that does sound terrible, what blindspots might i have that are as bad as steinem's?
040
zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
in this case, that feminism means nothing unless it's for all women. wouldn't you hate to repeat steinem's mistakes? i would. i'd like feminism to keep improving, and i don't see how it does that without noting its failures.

i found the post to be an interesting complication. it's good to remember that our heroes have flaws and are not perfect. energizing, even, since it reminds you that you don't have to be perfect to get something good done, and a useful corrective for your own behavior.

marlowe in fact straight up says at the end of his ethnography that the average hadzan was living a better life than the average tanzanian in general. james c. scott also did a lot of fieldwork on people who repeatedly fled the state and resisted incorporation

zap @zapdotx.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
Devereaux is talking about early states, so certainly post-agricultural, post-urban. do you have sources you recommend? cause james c. scott's book on early state formation Against the Grain, and frank marlowe's ethnography of the hadza, both marshal decent evidence non-state life was better

Have you really never felt the ignoble impulse to gloat at an enemy's misfortune, even if it didn't affect you at all? This is a grotesque case, but seems well within the bounds of normality to me. So of course it's not productive. It's not meant to be.

This is a very _earnest_ take. Luigi fans, from talking to them, don't think this helps or changes the system. But it makes them feel good, it's cathartic for them, sort of like how telling Brer Rabbit stories made American slaves feel better about their lot

In terms of adjusting to culture shock. The goal is just to keep ppl in as long as they don’t make too much of a fuss, not to help them make the most of it, as one would if they cared about justice

honestly yes, english is unusually fucked up bc of the large # of french loanwords--hence two or three ways of saying everything and inconsistent spelling. it was better before the norman invasion of 1066 www.jordanmposs.com/blog/2023/6/... makes it an incredible language for writing novels tho
