...I'm getting rambly about lore, but yeah... Rai is different from the Expies, but people DO see the similarities with them being kind of an artificial beast of burden, often in universe being treated as just test subjects and property produced by an intergalactic mega-corporation...

The personality maps can be changed when Rai's created, but over time, Rai can become their own person separate from that... unfortunately, as property, backups of their minds are compressed, meaning some behaviors of a replica from a backup disc might only emulate behaviors without the full logic.

It is worth noting that when just skipping through default personality maps, Rai's got a default happy-go-lucky attitude that can make them hard to differentiate from the main RAIKO line, especially in an android/robotic body... but Rai's adaptation orientation can change over time despite that...

Discounted as a beta product, that's how you get Rai being used like a normal AI, which data is gained from... particularly how Rai might handle... harsher situations... Anino Systems does note that Rai's more suited to a personal assistant than a line worker, but hey, "this one's cheaper." :3

"Rai" is as much of a name for Rai as "Expie" is for the experiments... Rai doesn't have to have their standard patterns, but it's treated more like a company livery as the default setting when you load the order site. Rai's often on space stations as a social experiment, but other... tests happen.

The only additional thing is that Rai's producers, Anino Inc (Shadow, translated from Filipino), decided to push the enhanced neural maps of the RAIKO-ν type series (AKA "Rai Taiko")(yes, that's NU like the gundam) a step further by making it possible to map to organic bodies as a second experiment.

Of course, part of that is that Rai's lore is based on some versions of Space Station 13 lore, particularly stuff from around 2018/2019 from Virgo Orbital and Chompstation, when lore still referenced space magic and, more importantly to Rai's lore, noted that sentient AIs aren't considered people.

You know, it is a bit fun thinking about how Rai in his world is quite similar to the expies in theirs... Rai being an unshackled and un-networked (you know why) derivative of the RAIKO system does mean that Rai tends to not require training like Expies, but is still often literally a grunt...

And before you ask, no, Rai is not a shapeshifter. They're a series of artificial beings, which is why Rai's not pinned as having a singular personality or shape as they're software that just so happens to have been made able to run on fleshy or robotic hardware alike.

Despite being a rogue, Makoto's a pretty simple character. They act like a real Robin Hood (Stealing from the rich/poor for the rich/poor alike, taking a cut), and can be a BIG showoff while doing it like a phantom thief. As an arcane trickster, he's also a magic item kleptomaniac.
