Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 06/08/2026Just me and the clankers chilling with a billion rows of EPA CEMS data in Parquet. Dang polars is fast. And adjusting for net vs. gross generation kinda destroys the heat rates on combustion turbines. 140
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 04/08/2026If you look at the all-in cost of driving and not just energy costs (as represented here by the IRS reimbursement rate per mile, inflation adjusted) it's predictably exorbitant. And this is still just a portion of the the private cost. A society that imposes car dependency impoverishes itself. 010
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 11/07/2026And it gets real crazy if you break out zero-vehicle from 1+ vehicle households. With no car everyone spends ~5% of their income on transportation. With 1+ cars the lowest-income quintile spends 40-50% of their income on transport! 010
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 11/07/2026Slight correction on the transportation spending... it's 15% for the US as a whole but 30% for the lowest income quintile and 20% for 2nd lowest. I was thinking of low-income households with the 25% number. www.bts.gov/data-spotlig... 110

Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 25/06/2026I finally tried out the @marimo.io marimo-pair skill to do some light data analysis and plotting in conversation with an LLM and it really worked. Tedious plotting layout and syntax fadeed into the background. I used OpenCode + GLM 5.2, @pola.rs and @matplotlib.org Would recommend. #EnergySky 1102
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 07/06/2026But I definitely do not understand the (substantial!) "appreciation" portion of the Energea returns. Why should shares appreciate when the underlying physical asset depreciates? Is there a mountain of future dividends approaching? Are projects under development de-risking as they near operation? 200
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 02/06/2026Wait so Nvidia is worth like, 5x as much as all US electricity infrastructure combined? #EnergySky github.com/catalyst-coo... 044
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 18/05/2026I wonder if you could make this into an interesting 3D map, with each transmission line a ridge. Height could be voltage and width or cross-sectional area could be peak power capacity. Or maybe actually utilized capacity. You could animate it with hourly data. #EnergySky github.com/open-energy-... 150
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 08/04/2026I was struggling to find the full res Artemis photos on NASA's site, but they do seem to have them up on Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/nasa2... 021
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 11/03/2026From a talk by a Ukrainian attorney using LLMs to parse legal filings to create customized public notifications about corruption cases via Telegram channels. And one thing they found was... traditional institutions also hallucinate: 120
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 22/02/2026It was a half day ride to the nearest bus terminal in Pochutla, and I left ridiculously early to avoid the heat and make sure I didn't miss the bus. I've been slow to accept just how easy it is to take a bike on the bus here, but so far it's never been a hassle. 030
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 22/02/2026After sunset I gathered myself to ride the 3km back to Mazunte in the dark, and was amazed to discover that the previously hot, bright, empty streets behind the beach had been transformed into active pedestrian space 100
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 22/02/2026I made it down to the beach for every sunrise and sunset. The water pleasant for swimming even at dawn. I had Playa Mermejita all to myself, abandoned in the heat of the day. Something about the beach makes grownups able to laugh and play in the water like kids. 120
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 22/02/2026With the recent completion of a highway fromn Oaxaca to the coast that had been in progress for ~20 years, I imagine there's a real estate frenzy building. Posters advertising surveyors and architecture services alongside offers of energy work and muliti-week practical courses in yoni massage. 100
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 22/02/2026Like many beach towns, it was more oriented around walking and human scale spaces. It was also overtly queer friendly, with public displays of affection between all genders of scantily clad tourists, both Mexican and foreign. I quickly found a coffee shop with buttery pastries to visit every morning 100
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 22/02/2026But it was much better to have the beach at the end of the trip. Easier to just laze and feel okay about it. And Mazunte definitely seemed to be into the lazing. Situated on a south facing point, you can watch both the sunset and sunrise over the Pacific in the winter. 110
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 10/02/2026After the descent there were still miles of hot, rolling hills to get to the coast. I forget how tiring they are. I drank 4 liters and never peed, but didn't eat anything except breakfast and an emergency Snickers at 4pm. Still running on 2 past days of heavy food. 110
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 10/02/2026Reading Frank Tannenbaum's 1950 snapshot of post revolutionary Mexico, none of the countryside had electricity 75 years ago. The dates on all the poles along these dirt roads are from the last 25 years. In another 25 everyone will marvel that we ever built this kind of rural linear infrastructure. 100
Zane Selvans @zaneselvans.org · 10/02/2026I'd reserved a place in Mazunte before leaving San Mateo, giving myself 2 days to make the descent, so on Monday I had a fixed destination. I hate the stress that kind of commitment creates. 10 hours of riding, losing 2000m, descending into the lush cloud forests. 110
