Zackenberg field season 2026 has come to an end. Our fantastic logistics team has now left the station after successfully closing it down for the winter season. A sincere thank you to all researchers, technicians, students, and support staff who visited and worked at Zackenberg this year.

Ready for winter ❄️ The new main building in Zackenberg has now been fully enclosed and covered in the station's characteristic "musk ox blue" façade. With the exterior work largely completed, the building is protected through the winter, and interior work will continue during 2027 season.

Curious visitor at the GeoBasis #methane monitoring site. This polar bear stopped by for an inspection of our field instruments. Luckily, everything passed the quality check. 🐻‍❄️ Please use the boardwalks next time :-) #GreenlandEcosystemMonitoring

A major milestone reached in Zackenberg! Despite some challenges with the internet connection, which unfortunately caused us to lose parts of the time-lapse footage, we are excited to share that the new main building has now been closed in, with walls and roof fully in place.

Klara & Mollie have been collecting data for their Master’s thesis examining the Green Island effect around Musk ox carcasses. Musk ox is the only big grasser in Greenland, and when they die they introduce a nutrient pulse into the otherwise nutrient-poor soil, leading to richer vegetation.

Ready, set, go... 🚁🏗️ From helicopter airlifts and prefabricated wall sections, this time-lapse shows the remarkable construction journey of the new main building at Zackenberg. Take a look at the project coming to life. @Institut for Ecoscience - Aarhus Universitet #AVJFonde

Like many others, we hoped to witness yesterday's total #solar eclipse. Unfortunately, thick clouds meant the eclipse was hidden from view. However, as the Moon briefly blocked the Sun, our monitoring systems recorded clear responses in incoming radiation, air temperature, and ecosystem fluxes.

This week, the research vessel Tarajoq has arrived in the fjord at Zackenberg. Operated by the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources and based in Nuuk, Tarajoq is Greenland’s flagship research vessel. 🚢 ❄️

While researchers are busy carrying out fieldwork in Zackenberg, progress is also being made in the station area. The new main building is steadily taking shape, and within the next month the outer walls will be erected. #Logistics #Venslev #AageVJensenFoundations

Bird performing a classic "broken-wing" distraction display—pretending to be injured to lure potential predators away from its nest. On this day, the "predators" happened to be our station logisticians making their way through the station area.

Waste management, Arctic-style ♻️❄️ In remote field sites like Zackenberg, nothing goes to waste—and everything requires a practical solution. One simple but effective method: compressing plastic garbage in an empty oil drum to reduce volume and make transport easier, minimizing environmental impact.

Close encounter in Northeast Greenland! As part of the #GEM programme, we monitor Long-tailed Skuas at Zackenberg. During nest checks, including when we “float” eggs to estimate hatch dates, the birds quickly defend their territory—swooping in, and landing on the head!

The snow is melting very fast and even the ground is thawing. We have been measuring the thawing and freezing of the ground for nearly 30 years. #GeoBasis measure over 300 locations - in this way, we can follow seasonal cycles and changes in maximum depth and thawing patterns over the years. #GEM

Refuelling at the “local gas station” in Northeast Greenland ✈️❄️ To continue its journey, the Twin Otter (on skis) needed fuel at Zackenberg. A nice detail : the logisticians bibs perfectly match the colour of the aircraft. #logistics

Long-tailed Skuas are monitored in the #GEM programme at Zackenberg. These elegant Arctic seabirds migrate thousands of km to southern oceans and switch from piracy at sea to lemming hunting on land. With 6 nests found so far, it looks like a good lemming year. Colour rings help track survival.

During this Spring, we’ve been getting our good old friend ARGO back into shape —removing a broken drive shaft. This ARGO isn’t just any vehicle. This is the very same machine that transported Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark Margrethe II during a visit to Zackenberg in 2004. #logistics #royalARGO

Purple saxifrage is one of the earliest Arctic species to flower—often while snow still covers the ground. At Zackenberg, it is among the first to bloom each season. Its phenology is tracked through the BioBasis programme, contributing to long-term monitoring of climate-driven ecosystem change.

Just two days after the river started flowing, Zackenberg gained near-unlimited access to fresh water—always a highlight of the season. A simple, almost junkyard-inspired hose system make water supply refuelling process faster. We can also track #water consumption—key for remote #logistics.

Ski season at Zackenberg is approaching its end as snow conditions transition with the advancing melt season 🎿 One particularly practical setup has been the use of ski bindings compatible with rubber boots—allowing continued access across mixed snow and wet terrain. #monitoring #Arctic

Arctic wolves have been making appearances at Zackenberg this season 🐺 A group was spotted from the station back in April, and recently, more were caught on a camera trap at a fox den. The cameras are used by #BioBasis to count fox pups—but they often capture some great “bycatches”. #Monitoring

The Zackenberg River started flowing yesterday—and of course we couldn’t just let that happen without watching it unfold 🌊 So the four people on site kept an eye on the first water making its way toward the delta, while enjoying a really nice dinner. A proper NE Greenland “live broadcast.”

Zackenberg River began its seasonal flow past the research station on the evening of May 30 🌊 Each year, this marks a key moment for Arctic monitoring. Discharge, sediment, and water chemistry are tracked through a collaboration between Asiaq and GeoBasis. #Arctic #Monitoring

Cargo over‑ice transport from Daneborg to Zackenberg is an important part of our spring logistics when snow covers the ground. Thanks to SIRIUS cargo sledges, we can transport 2,000 liters of fuel in one trip, and building materials for the new Zackenberg building have also been moved.
