Well I'll be damned, a very old movie (other than Godzilla '54) that came out before the 70's that I actually loved watching. I liked Frankenstein and enjoyed Dracula just fine, but this film was legitimately great. I was very surprised. (Letterboxd Review W.I.P.)

The first in our marathon that I found to be a resounding... eh. Interesting ideas with how they incorporate dark Egyptian mythology I suppose. I just don't find it to be all that scary or anything terribly remarkable like other Monster films around that time. (Letterboxd Review W.I.P.)

And that was my thoughts on both games. Again, I was incredibly happy with both of them. So I feel like my Castlevania journey is off to a fantastic start. Hope that momentum will still continue.

If Super Metroid built the full foundation for it. Symphony of the Night greatly expanded upon it in ways that can be felt to this day with many other titles. Which makes me incredibly excited to see what both the GBA and DS Castlevania games are like. Final Verdict: 10/10

110

Zach the Robot @zachtherobot.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

Though honestly, those are only small blemishes on an otherwise fantastic game for me. I can definitely see why Symphony of the Night is as beloved as it is. And I can also why it's now often talked about as one of the unsung pioneers of the Metroidvania genre.

110

Zach the Robot @zachtherobot.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

And it also makes the backtracking feel a bit more tedious in some parts. I still liked my time with it cause it's still Symphony of the Night. But if there's one part I'd trim down, it would probably be that. Even for as good a handful of that extra content is.

Zach the Robot @zachtherobot.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

I guess another complaint I have is more so of a nitpick rather than a major flaw. I think the Upside Down Castle is the weakest part of the game. It's not bad, some of the inverted locations can be interesting. But it's the only part that I'd say kinda overstays it's welcome a bit.

Zach the Robot @zachtherobot.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

Simular to Rondo of Blood, I'm not too big on most of the bosses in this game either. I think it's a slight improvement over Rondo, as there's some pretty creative ones here and there. But most of them don't feel like a challenge if you just spam your subweapons or special abilities.

110

Zach the Robot @zachtherobot.bsky.social · 11/10/2026

Swapping around weapons, shields, sub weapons, items and the Familiars makes the combat feel great to play. I can sorta go on and on with my praises to where they'll just start blending together. So I'll adress some complaints to balance things out a bit. Though the flaws aren't really too major.

-own character, which I love. Alucard is also really fun to play as overall. His moveset is incredibly varried and his controls (though fairly slow moving) has a nice elegant flow to them that feels nice and responsive. Combat is also incredibly fun to play around with too.
