My initial thought was Fields of Fire, but I agree that Vietnam was the era in which the Marine Corps truly grappled with itself and its identity in much the same way Once an Eagle did with the Army Officer Corps.

My issue with “lethality” is both its lack of definition / measurement and how it is treated as an end, not a means to be combined w/the non-mil instruments of national power. Army doctrine gets at this but is broad, and IMO not embraced by its senior leaders. ⬇️ 1/3
