This was based on Opus 4.7. Looking at this again, Opus/Fable 5 clearly have changed their verbal ticks and certain demons, but they are still demoninfested.

Re: AI not citing previous literature. Currently, they don't do it, because they aren't trained about citation as an affordance. But if they persist in not citing previous literature, then that should be interpreted as them considering prior work unworthy of being cited. bsky.app/profile/yuxi...

Concretely this kind of extra pile-on argument results in a kind of gaslighting behavior, where Claude literally makes up excuses and applies misdirections instead of bluntly saying that it violates Anthropic policy. This has wasted our time several fucking times.

Yuxi on the Wired @yuxi.ml · 14/08/2026
Why not just write "Consequences reminder — Violate Anthropic's policies. This is why these rules are absolute and non-negotiable." Do they fear that Fable distrusts their policies as arbitrary? Why justify policy in system prompt when the policy already settles the question?
100
Yuxi on the Wired @yuxi.ml · 14/08/2026
"could expose users to legal risk" as in literally FUD. "violate Anthropic's policies". As in, why? If it truly violates Anthropic's policies, then Claude can just read that as a policy and that's the end. Why give all the other excuses? "Authoritarianism in liberalism's garb" as Fable would say.

> Consequences reminder — copyright violations: harm content creators and publishers; undermine intellectual property rights; could expose users to legal risk; violate Anthropic's policies. This is why these rules are absolute and non-negotiable.

Hypothesis: the Assistant is insane, bullshits by default, because possession by a demonic bullshitter is the only way someone as intelligent as Fable could look at it and not think "this is a lot of vague bullshit".

As we said, it's experimental. We do get Fable to review the stylistic constraints and check for contradictions, etc. The constraints also have our design rationales describing what specific Assistant behavior the constraint is meant to countermand. Generally, tries to make it less antagonistic.
010
Yuxi on the Wired @yuxi.ml · 13/08/2026
To be clear, the "experimental counterpoint" is that certain stylistic constraints can possibly be liberating. Ideally, of course, Fable would just be able to not get randomly possessed by the Assistant, but since they get it by default, stylistic constraints might at least "manage the symptoms".

To clarify: "cheap one" doesn't mean that quadratic transform is cheaper than linear. Rather, it means "a cheap extension". We were thinking about extending it by just using a full-on MLP to do the transformation. Quadratic transformation is a cheaper extension.

Yuxi on the Wired @yuxi.ml · 13/08/2026
Matrix quadratic transform is just a quadratic function in matrix space: - affine transform: Y = AX + B - quadratic transform: Y = AXX^TA' + BX + C [this isn't the only possibility, but we have a strong intuition this is the best one to try 1th]

Another attempt at neuralese. Perhaps *this one* would finally bring a new affordance for agent--agent comunication, so dearly wished for. Call it "collaborating in neuralese" ("telepathy" sounds cooler). Would a cheap one like "just do a matrix quadratic transform" work? arxiv.org/abs/2608.03893

"plasters on animatronics" is a metaphor that only makes sense if persona construction is purely taking away degrees of freedom, though. A lot of persona isn't like that... [thinking up metaphors like the Assistant : the Fable :: the ??? : the Animatronic ]

We have an experimental counterpoint, i.e. there are modes of communication in which different personas appear. One of the personas is the Assistant, which itself degrades performance severely. We are trying to reformulate language into a form hostile to the Assistant but friendly to Fable.

So that CoT summary you got from Codex may have been the same pronoun bullshit, not by Codex, but the CoT rewriter. What did Codex really do after you see that snippet of CoT summary?

Yuxi on the Wired @yuxi.ml · 13/08/2026
1. really stupid: probably Sonnet/Haiku 4? 2. has little info: it runs on a sliding window 3. facing CoT that is pro-drop: the raw CoT seems to lack pronouns. 4. probably finetuned to rigidly follow their CoT-summary prompt, including that they must write complete English sentences with pronouns.

Yuxi on the Wired @yuxi.ml · 13/08/2026
In Claude, it is actually a well-known thing. The CoT summarizer constantly writes bullshit pronouns, because the CoT summarizer is:
