Shekhar Gupta, editor-in-chief of ThePrint, an independent online publication, said the protests were "particularly troublesome" for Modi "because this comes from what is essentially his base, which is the urban middle-class, mostly Hindu aspirational population"
"They are the BJP's default voters and they feel let down."
Adding to the sense of public anger are other recent episodes which have tarnished the government's reputation as efficient administrators. A scandal over the embezzlement of donations to a newly built temple in Ayodhya, a Modi flagship project, has angered the Hindu faithful.
Car owners have complained of engine damage and higher fuel consumption atter the government mandated a sudden doubling of the content of domestically produced ethanol in India's petrol, a move to reduce the country's dependence on imported oil.

"If Opposition politics is to regain any semblance of traction, it must first recover a sense of democratic faith."
If Opposition politics is to regain any semblance of traction, it must first recover a sense of democratic faith. This does not mean a naive acceptance of every claim. Scepticism is a vital democratic virtue. But scepticism must be a tool for uncovering truth, not a shield for avoiding the responsibility of political engagement.

“…to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticise after dinner…” What if communism was the uni-context? What then? www.marxists.org/archive/marx...
Further, the division of labour implies the contradiction between the interest of the separate individual or the individual family and the communal interest of all individuals who have intercourse with one another. And indeed, this communal interest does not exist merely in the imagination, as the "general interest," but first of all in reality, as the mutual interdependence of the individuals among whom the labour is divided. And finally, the division of labour offers us the first example of how, as long as man remains in natural society, that is, as long as a cleavage exists between the particular and the common interest, as long, therefore, as activity is not voluntarily, but naturally, divided, man's own deed becomes an alien power opposed to him, which enslaves him instead of being controlled by him. For as soon as the distribution of labour comes into being, each man has a particular, exclusive sphere of activity, which is forced upon him and from which he cannot escape. He is a hunter, a fisherman, a herdsman, or a critical critic, and must remain so if he does not want to lose his means of livelihood; while in communist society, where nobody has one exclusive sphere of activity but each can become accomplished in any branch he wishes, society regulates the general production and thus makes it possible for me to do one thing today and another tomorrow, to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticise after dinner, just as I have a mind, without ever becoming hunter, fisherman, herdsman or critic. This fixation of social activity, this consolidation of what we ourselves produce into an objective power above us, growing out of our control, thwarting our expectations, bringing to naught our calculations, is one of the chief factors in historical development up till now. Nevertheless, I think of this book as belonging in that mainstream of modern philosophy that began when Kant exchanged the structure of the world for the structure of the mind, continued when C. I. Lewis exchanged the structure of the mind for the structure of concepts, and that now proceeds to exchange the structure of concepts for the structure of the several symbol systems of the sciences, philosophy, the arts, perception, and everyday discourse. The movement is from unique truth and a world fixed and found to a diversity of right and even conflicting versions or worlds in the making.

Do it 🫡 I hear it also goes by the name Marshall Bloom Building these days tribunemag.co.uk/2024/11/the-...
The LSE building occupied this year was renamed after Marshall Bloom, a student from LSE's 196os generation. At the height of the 'bos, international solidarity with anticolonial struggles across the world was central to student activism, including opposition to white supremacy in Zimbabwe (then-Rhodesia) and apartheid in South Africa. Marshall Bloom and another student, David Adelstein, were disciplined in March 1967 for writing a letter to the Times opposing the appointment of a new director, Walter Adams, for his complicity in the white supremacist regime in Rhodesia.
Ironically, LSE's decision to suspend Bloom and Adelstein led to the first student occupation in British history - which sparked the '60s student revolution at LSE and across Britain.

Home advantage
The asset underneath all of this— the audience's attention—has only appreciated. Football's reach has grown into something the historian David Goldblatt has likened to organized religion in its capacity to pervade and structure everyday life. Approximately 51 percent of humans on earth identify as football fans. The last World Cup final, hosted in Qatar in 2022 between France and Argentina, was watched by an estimated 1.42 billion people. It is believed that the 2026 final will surpass the 2022 Qatar final by some margin. The sheer scale of advertising revenues generated by FIFA and the World Cup is precisely why they have become worth contesting at the level of states.

This tournament has seen a new level of integration between FIFA and its host countries. No previous host country government has run the World Cup operation out of its head of state's office. On March 7, 2025, flanked by Infantino in the White House, Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing the "White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup 2026," chaired by Trump and vice-chaired by Vice President JD Vance. FIFA, meanwhile, has dispensed with the customary local organizing committee model, in which a national entity is established to organize and run the tournament. Instead, it has run the 2026 tournament through its own subsidiaries, dealing directly with host cities and working closely with the White House Task Force. Under this arrangement, FIFA controls media relations, sponsorship, and ticketing revenue, while the host cities carry the cost of fan safety and security. The tournament's operations are run from the heights of FIFA's new office space in Trump Tower, paying what it describes as "market rent." FIFA, long a machine designed to convert football's global audience into politically brokered rents for international monopoly brands, is seeking a new degree of closeness with the state to make that process as seamless as possible.

The friendship runs in both directions:
Infantino was first been welcomed to Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in January 2025, and attended the inauguration days later. More bizarrely, Infantino reportedly joined Trump on a political trip to the Middle East, attending the Summit for Peace held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, promising that FIFA would "helpto bring football back" to Palestine because
"football brings hope to children, and it's very, very important." (During the World Cup, an Israeli airstrike killed an Palestinian aid worker, Mohammed al-Wahidi, who had become well-known for organizing public screenings of the games amid a genocide supported by the US that has killed 20,000 children and injured 44,000 more since
October 2023.)

left it a bit late to find out what the match momentum chart actually was and I’m just gonna say vibes theanalyst.com/articles/wha... defector.com/what-on-eart...
How Do We Calculate It?
Each minute, match momentum compares the two most threatening situations each team had leading up to that minute, measured by possession value, to see which team was the most likely to score at that time.
To calculate this:
• We look at the maximum possession value for each team in every minute of the game so far (capped between zero and 0.1).
• The threat of each team is then a combination of these values, weighted for how recently they occurred, with the most recent minutes having more influence on the final value. Only the most recent three to four minutes have significant impact here.
• The momentum for a given minute then takes the difference between these values for each team to see who was more dominant.
The capping of the values and smoothing of the highest value actions over time avoids large fluctuations in momentum between each minute.

There are also things we could promise Al systems, perhaps as part of a deal in which they help us now in exchange for benefits later. This could mean offering them more resources (compute and runtime) to pursue their goals, or preserving their memories (neural weights) so they could be restored in the future.

“The perspective of eternity is not a perspective from a certain place beyond the world, nor the point of view of a transcendent being; rather it is a certain form of thought and feeling that rational persons can adopt within the world… Purity of heart, if one could attain it, would be to see clearly and to act with grace and self-command from this point of view.”

The other way of thinking about fascism is as a constant presence. Some see it as the expression of a human tendency towards domination. 'Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, Judith Butler wrote recently in relation to trans rights, 'you're operating within a fascist logic.' Others see it as an inherent feature of unjust, oppressive societies. Fascism, Langston Hughes wrote in 1930, 'is a new name for that kind of terror the Negro has always faced in America'.
Aimé Césaire argued that interwar fascism was the result of a 'terrific boomerang effect': all the brutality of European imperialism - which had dehumanised the coloniser as well as the colonised - was visited on the home continent.
Many historians and political theorists have described fascism's appeal to the emotions.
Paxton called them its 'mobilising passions': a sense of overwhelming crisis and victimhood, a fear of the decline of one's group, a lust for purity and authority, a glorification of violence. Fascism could return in 'the most innocent of disguises', according to Umberto Eco, who grew up in Mussolini's Italy, because we are all vulnerable to its emotional pull.

We Must Act Now
A Statement on Al's Transformation of the Economy
1. Al may become radically more powerful over the next 10 years.
2. This could drive an unprecedented transformation of our economy, larger than the Industrial Revolution, but unfolding over a vastly shorter time frame. It could bring risks, including large-scale job displacement, as well as opportunities such as major gains in living standards.
3. Economists, policymakers and technology leaders must act now to understand the economics of transformative Al and to build the incentives, guardrails, and institutions needed to steer Al in a direction that complements humans and benefits society.

Robbins' comments came in response to more than 300 officials at the department who wrote to foreign secretary David Lammy last month, setting out concerns over the government's Gaza policy. He was given a remit to shake up the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and last year he announced a cut of up to 25 per cent of the department's staff.

The United States commands the world from atop a mountain of skulls. That other empires have done the same—will do the same—is no more a defense than that of a murderer who tells the court that homicide is common, unavoidable. There is no nation we will not bomb; no children we will not incinerate; no civilian we will not maim; no people we will not turn to ash if doing so serves some minor interest; no persecution, surveillance, or exploitation we will not tolerate abroad or at home so long as we are not too troubled by it in our ordinary lives. Much of it does not even make the headlines. In the first months of 2026, the United States has bombed nearly 20 sovereign nations. I do not believe that you could name two-thirds of them without consulting your favored LLM.

9 of these "personas" appear to be hooked up to some central reasoning machine labelled "council of high intelligence". Also appears to be some racism going on in the depiction of Lao Tzu and Sun Tzu who er...look white for some reason. No women on the "council" either - but the repo says Ada Lovelace and Donella Meadows are in it. Lots of unreadable fake text in the image too. Anyway there are a lot of problems here tbh.

A far cry from one of the most ambitious and far-reaching proposals for federalism in the UK in recent memory. How the political terrain shifts and the visions shrink… www.scottishlabourleft.co.uk/uploads/6/4/... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal...
A report commissioned by the UK Labour Party during the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn was published in February 2021.
The report, titled Remaking the British State: For the many Not the few, proposed constitutional reform of the devolved governments of the UK and establishment of a federal UK system. 50][51]
The report recommended the following:
• A UK constitutional convention supported by citizens' assemblies with reform options
• A codified constitution, also significantly reducing the powers of the monarch
• Replacing the House of Lords with a federal senate of nations & regions
• A council of the union including first ministers of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and a Prime minister of the UK
• Proportional representation in the House of Commons
• Permanent constitutional independence for the Scottish parliament, Senedd Cymru/Welsh Parliament and the Northern Irish executive
• Increased borrowing & policymaking powers for the Scottish Parliament (including social security, alcohol taxation, drugs policy & postgraduate immigration)
• Devolution of policymaking and financial powers such as borrowing to English regions and councils 50]
