A large wildfire erupted on the Croatian island of Brač late on 10 September. Lightning was striking ahead of an approaching thunderstorm before the fire was first reported. Firefighters suggested lightning was most likely cause. We look at lightning data to see what happened. youtu.be/IPWYxBhMzWQ

Lightning strikes detected by the Blitzortung network from 2150 UTC 12 Aug to 2030 UTC 13 Aug (~23 hours) over Honshu, remarkably long lived multiple thunderstorm rounds. Chiba labelled at start where "unprecedented" rains occurred, level 5 emergency was issued and tragically at least 8 died.

The Meteosat-12 imagery just in from dawn this morning shows the smoke from the #gironde and #biscarrosse #wildfires has moved inland and covers SW France. Heat signatures give indication of shift in fire directed inland towards west outskirts of Bordeaux. 220,000 evacuated.
