Academia: a system that requires years of training to be eligible for basic, entry-level positions yet lacks the capacity to provide those positions to over 90% of the people whom it trains.

Just published: my thoughts on Mustafa Aksakal's new book "The War that Made the Middle East," about WW1 and the destruction of the Ottoman Empire. The book can be seen as a story about disillusionment with law--constitutional and international--and the rise of authoritarianism.

Delighted to announce that my new article, “Tipu and the Tabur: South Asian Influence on Ottoman Military Reform,” has just been published in CSSAAME! I argue that an embassy from Tipu Sultan of Mysore catalyzed the first steps toward the Ottoman Nizam-ı Cedid reforms.
