Disabled lives matter.
[ID: Dark background with red and white text that reads, “YOU MAY KNOW: In the 1930s, a certain group of peopled claimed that the sterilization and later killing of disabled people was “merciful”. BUT DID YOU ALSO KNOW: After being legalized in 1927 (Buck v. Bell), the forced sterilization of disabled people without their consent remains legal in more than half of the states in the US today? DISABLED PEOPLE WANT YOU TO KNOW THE DOOR WAS NEVER FULLY CLOSED.”]

The nearly month-long San Francisco Section 504 sit-in began on April 5, 1977, as protesters around the US demanded that the federal government enforce Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act. May we never forget the change we can create together. #section504 #JudyHeumann #disabilityrights
[ID: A disibility pride flag background with an image from the San Francisco Section 504 sit-in with text that reads, "As we reflect on the 1977 Section 504 sit-ins, it is important for us to remember the support disabled protesters received from organizations such as the Black Panther Party, Delaney Street, The Gay Men's Butterfly Brigade, the United Farm Workers, the Gray Panthers, the Salvation Army, and more. Without their support, the San Francisco Section 504 sit-in would have likely failed. For each of their contributions, we are eternally grateful. To all those who treat our children with love, acceptance, and respect… thank you. And to those who want to remove protections from the vulnerable and strip them of their dignity, please remember this:
[ID: a black background with a small image of hands holding a paper heart, in rainbow colors. The white text reads, “Let me be blunt: CHILDREN ARE KILLING THEMSELVES BECAUSE THEY DO NOT BELIEVE THEY ARE LOVED AND ACCEPTED JUST THE WAY THEY ARE. Please. Think about that. And then think about it again, and again, and again...”]

So I had an interview about being in a pageant for women in wheelchairs… the response was… well… yeah. Words matter. Please remember that. #disabilityrights #disabled #humanrights #bekind #wheelchairuser #wheelchairlife #wordsmatter

To those who are speaking out right now- especially elected officials making statements: Please have an ASL interpreter. Or if sharing a video- have it captioned/provide a transcript/translate it/etc. Please make your speeches accessible for all. Thank you. #accessibility #accessibilitymatters

What does the disabled community want? We don’t want our disabilities to be erased. We want our disabled voices to be heard. We want to be supported. We want to be valued for who we are, not for our productivity. We want to be celebrated. We want our history not to be repeated… We want to exist.
[ID: black background with thin green, pink, and purple frame with white text that states, “I don’t see your disability” is NOT the goal. I see your disability. I see the impact this inaccessible world has on your life. I value your input. I will educate myself about the history of your community. I will fight for your rights. I will amplify your voice so that your story may be heard. I will work against the ableism that harms you. You matter. Please tell me how to do better." That's the goal.]

Many things sold in grocery stores are written off as being “lazy”: Jarred garlic, pre-sliced/diced produce, heat and serve meals, pre-cut cheeses and meats, individual portions, easy open packaging, steamer bags of frozen veggies… etc. They’re not lazy… they make food accessible for all.
[ID: a black background with a green, pink, and purple frame, which includes the following text in white: “If you can’t see the need, it wasn’t created for you.”]

Sigh. I hate that we have to have this conversation, but PLEASE speak to your children about the impact words can have on others and why the use of slurs is harmful. And please remember that you are your child’s primary teacher. They learn core values from you and may parrot your words.

To those who enthusiastically speak out against DEI: we hear you. #disabilityawareness #disabilityrights #humanrights #inclusionmatters #womensrights #DEI #DEIA #sparkingchange #AccessibilityMatters #accessibilityforall
[ID: Black background with white text that reads, “Just a reminder: When you speak out against DEI, you create barriers that make it harder for marginalized communities to be a part of this world. When you speak out against DEI, you hold basic human rights out of the reach of those in need. When you speak out against DEI, you strip fellow human beings of their dignity. When you speak out against DEI, you silence voices already often left unheard and ignored. When you speak out against DEI, you erase the lessons history has tried to teach us. When you speak out against DEl, you tell the world: you simply do not want marginalized communities to exist.”]

While the fight for disability rights continues even today, we remember those who fought before us. Please meet Brad Lomax. To learn more about Brad Lomax, I recommend watching this video- visit www.pbs.org/wnet/america... #disabilityrights #AccessibilityMatters #section504 #disabilityawareness
[ID: a teal background with a picture of civil rights leader and disability rights activist, Brad Lomax, with a black text that reads, “Meet Brad Lomax (1950-1984). Brad Lomax was a civil rights leader and disability rights activist. He was a member the Black Panther Party and co-founded the East Oakland Center for Independent Living. Brad Lomax worked to raise awareness about the intersection of disability and race. He is remembered for being instrumental in passing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. He participated in the 1977 504 sit-in at the San Francisco federal building, during which the Black Panther Party supplied food and support to the protestors. Without this support, the 504 sit-ins around the US would have likely failed.
We are eternally grateful.”]

Let me be clear: 1) Attacking the trans community and trying to prevent their access to services, especially healthcare is disgusting. 2) Using the attack on the trans community to justify attacking the entire disabled community is also incredibly disgusting. #Section504 #disabilityrights

Who do you believe deserves to be treated with dignity? And who do you believe does not? Because right now- a lot of voices are being silenced; a lot of stories are being erased; a lot of people are being told they are not worthy; and a lot of suffering is happening within our nation.

I know there was a Day Without Immigrants… to show their impact on our country. I kinda wish there could be a Day Without DEI to show how far it extends.
