REVIEW: Sweet Victory
The American Revolutionary War doesn’t quite hit the British psyche like it does the American’s. It’s more of a footnote before the Victorian age of industry, empire and Dickensian poverty. Probably because we lost. Nevertheless, writer-director Elise Marra has taken a stab at this period of history and condensed it into an idiosyncratic 60 minute two-hander.

Paranormal Activity is everything an audience could want for a night at the theatre, haunting and intimate. Young couple James (James Bye) and Lou (Hannah Sinclair Robinson) have recently moved from Chicago to London to try and run away from their past. REVIEW: High Society
Tracy Lord’s wedding should be one of the biggest events of the season. Her former husband is still in the picture, a reporter has taken an interest in her family, and the preparations are becoming more complicated by the day. This is the setting for Cole Porter’s High Society, which has arrived at Lowry following a London season. Rachel Kavanaugh’s production has a strong cast, lovely costumes and a collection of songs that give the evening plenty of charm.

REVIEW: The Tempest
Have you ever wanted to see Shakespeare performed on a full size Elizabethan ship? If so then this show is for you. Adapted into a sixty minute abridged version, The Tempest has been re-imagined into a site-specific (more probably site-sympathetic) promenade performance for all the ages. Just make sure you’ve got good knees and a knack for ladders.

Few musicals have enjoyed the longevity of Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers, yet despite its familiarity, its exploration of class, inequality and circumstance remains remarkably pertinent today. This latest production at the Oxford Playhouse is a captivating and emotionally charged reminder of why the musical continues to resonate so strongly with audiences.
