By far the best of the three built-in options. #AppleNewton
A photo of my Apple Newton (a MessagePad 2100).

The note on the screen shows off different font options.

The note is titled “this is espy sans” and is in the espy sans font.

The top center of the note reads “Hello Mastodon” in what NewtonOS calls ink text. This is a slightly shrunk down version of my own handwriting.

The next line reads “This is the Casual font”, and is in a kind of handwriting-like text font.
The third line reads “This is the Simple font”, a sans-serif thin font.
The fourth line reads “this is the Fancy font”, a serifed font similar to Times New Roman.

Below that reads “as you can see, Casual looks best”

The final line reads “Ink text is used at the top - my own handwriting!”

I'm reading "Programming for the Newton", for, uh, reasons (I am weirdly obsessed with this ancient failed PDA). On Newton, data is stored in "soups", which are globally-accessible data blobs. This is both really cool, and not something that could possibly fly […] [Original post on hachyderm.io]
Sharing data

On many personal computers, information between applications is not shared. A typical example is names and phone numbers. A personal computer user has to enter names and phone numbers innumerable times. First, in a faxing utility, again in an address book, again in a word processor, and so on.

On Newton, a user should never have to repeat such information. Because soups are accessible to any application, users have access to data from anywhere. If you are creating an application that deals with names and phone numbers, you use the built in Names soup to get that data.

In conjunction with this, application writers are encouraged to publish the format of their soup entries so that other applications may access them. Apple also publishes the format of all its soups so that you can obtain information, as well as modify or augment existing information (like adding favorite color to each name in the Names soup).

Switching colors mid-print is fun, especially the contrast between the previous gray and the dark blue. That’s neat. This is the second change of this batch. The first few layers are black, and once that ran out, I switched to a gray sample reel I had laying around before going to the blue.
Several bitonal whistles in the process of being printed. I had just ran out of gray filament, and switched to a blue filament. The first layer with that switch is being printed, with a nice contrast between the gray of the previous layers and the blue just now being added.

[General Aviation drama] The letter I wrote. I'm sending it both as an email to the AOPA board trustee, and as a letter to AOPA headquarters. Images are duplicated for alt-text reasons. First image has first half, second image has the other half.
James Hauslein and the rest of the AOPA Board,

My name is Rachel Brindle, AOPA member [redacted]. I've been a member since November 2022. I'm a private pilot with a single-engine airplane instrument rating, and just over 250 hours total time. Just this past year | bought my first airplane: a 2014 Vans RV-9A, for which resources from both AOPA and the EAA were extremely helpful to me when making that decision.

| am writing to express my extreme displeasure that AOPA has parted ways with Darren Pleasance as CEO. This was extremely disappointing news to receive. | have been nothing but pleased by Mr. Pleasance’s tenure as CEO. AOPA is an advocacy group, and one which has not been serving its core members for years. Mr. Pleasance has gone out of his way to meet with pilots like me to ensure that we are heard, and that AOPA advocates for our concerns. In prior years, it felt much more like AOPA cared more about advocating for richer members - those who can afford $1 million+ turboprop or jet-powered aircraft -
instead of advocating for keeping general aviation accessible to the general public. AOPA needs to advocate for lead-free avgas, for improving the aviation medical system so that pilots can seek mental health care, advocating for electric aviation, and overall ensuring that everyone can access aviation. Mr. Pleasance made such things his priority.

[Remainder in the next image].[Continued from previous]:

The stated reason for Mr. Pleasance’s removal does not match given Mr. Pleasance’s purchasing a second home in Frederick, Maryland and reportedly spending more time at AOPA headquarters. This leads me to speculate that there are other reasons behind this. If Mr. Pleasance was fired for cause, we as members deserve to hear from the board the actual reasons why.

In addition to the firing of Mr. Pleasance, | find myself disgusted by AOPA's hiring of a third-party crisis management firm to attempt to manage the uproar over this. That is nothing less than a waste of money - money which should be spent on furthering AOPA's goals of advocating for pilots.

This incident has dramatically reduced my faith in AOPA's board to represent my interests and the interests of pilots. To help at least partially restore that faith, | am calling on the AOPA board to immediately reinstate Mr. Pleasance as CEO of AOPA. Additionally, | am calling on those members of the AOPA board responsible for Mr. Pleasance’s departure to resign. Furthermore, | am calling on those members of the AOPA board responsible for hiring of that crisis management firm to resign.

1 will be withholding my proxy vote for the foreseeable future, and if | do not see the changes | wish to see, | will be forced to reconsider whether | wish to continue being an AOPA member. | will also be advocating for other members to do the same as they see fit.

Thank you for your consideration,

Rachel Brindle

The metal lathe arrived! Now I have to build a stand for the thing, and then I can start making chips!
Looking down at a 10 inch x 30 inch benchtop metal lathe inside of a crate.

I’m in the process of transferring epoxy resin out of the reservoir in this Sticky Stuff epoxy dispenser. Only, I’m using an incredibly undersized peristaltic pump for the viscosity of the resin, so it’s taken about 13 hours so far, and I still have some left to […] [Original post on hachyderm.io]
A black tube immersed in the large reservoir of a stick stuff 2-part epoxy dispenser. It leads off-frame into a peristaltic pump, and comes back in frame to a plastic jug for this resin. There is a heating mat on the dispenser reservoir to help lower the viscosity of the resin so it’ll flow faster. There are 2 marks in sharpie on the reservoir, once showing the level of the epoxy a few hours after this started, the other when I paused it for the night after it had been running for ~7 hours or so. The level as of when this photo was taken is much lower than the middle level. But this probably still won’t finish by the time I stop it for the night.

Boo. I’m still going to take the train down there that week.
Screenshot of the first paragraph of Apple rejecting my request to attend the wwdc “special event at Apple Park”.

The actual email content is not interesting, just the rejection.
