"Extraordinarily" refers to values above the 95th percentile or below the 5th percentile of the reference period (1961-1990). In other words, 70% of all days in 2024 had temperatures that would usually only be observed 5% of the time.
Chart titled 'Maximum temperatures in Oaxaca City, Mexico 2024' comparing daily maximum temperatures in 2024 to the historical average from 1961-1990. The chart shows temperature trends from January to May, with maximum temperatures frequently exceeding historical averages. The solid black line represents the average maximum temperatures from 1961-1990, while the shaded gray area indicates the 90% reference period range (5th to 95th percentile). Peaks in red and orange represent 2024 temperatures, reaching as high as 9.8°C above average, and a notable dip in February at -2.6°C below average. Temperature ranges for 2024 are significantly higher than historical averages, especially from April to May.

🌡️ The recent #HeatWave in #Mexico has been intense, with cities like #Oaxaca experiencing prolonged periods of extreme temperatures. Here's a visualization I created about the number of hot and cold days. In 2024 104 out of 148 days (70%) were extraordinarily hot. #dataviz 📊 #ClimateChange
Chart titled 'Number of hot days in Mexico hits records in 2024' showing the frequency of extraordinarily hot and cold days in Oaxaca, Mexico, from 1940 to 2024. The chart highlights that 70% of the days in the first five months of 2024 were extraordinarily hot, with no extraordinarily cold days and only 2% of days below average temperature. Bars in red represent extraordinarily hot days, and bars in blue represent extraordinarily cold days. The chart shows a significant increase in hot days starting in the late 20th century, peaking in 2024. Values are compared to the reference period of 1961-1990.

For day 21 of the #30DayChartChallenge (green energy), I updated a visualization I made about a year ago. It shows daily electricity production shares from renewable sources. The good news: The yearly average has risen to almost 56% in 2023, with daily peaks of above 80%. 📊 #dataviz
A heatmap displaying daily shares of electricity production from renewable sources in Germany 2015-2023. It shows that these shares have grown significantly over the years.Three line graphs showing how electricity production in Germany has developed for conventional, fossil, and renewable sources from 2016 to 2023. The first two show a clear decline, the last one grew by more than 50%.An area graph showing the development of electricity production in Germany 2016 to 2023 by production source. It shows that overall production declined by 17%.

My contribution for day 1 of the #30daychartchallenge (part-to-whole): Global military expenditure as documented by the SIPRI Milex Database (milex.sipri.org/sipri). It will be very interesting to see how those numbers evolved in 2023, but that data is still not available.
NATO Dominates Military Expenditure
In 2022, NATO's 30 members made up over 54% of world military spending, with the USA outspending the next eight countries combined. Following were China, India, and Saudi Arabia. Russia, who started its war on Ukraine in 2022, ranked fifth at that point.

Grafik, die die Vermögensverteilung in Deutschland zeigt. Das reichste 1% hat mehr als ein Drittel, die reichsten 10% haben etwa zwei Drittel. Die unteren 50% haben zusammen nur 1,3% der Vermögen.

58,444 dead or missing human beings have been documented by the Missing Migrants Project of the IOM since 2014 (latest incident: Sep 5th 2023). The actual number is likely much higher. Here's a #Datavisualization I made of that horrendous number. Interactive version: yotka.org/missing-migr...
