Have you ever put off trying a hobby because you thought you wouldn't enjoy it until you got good at it? I've been doing that with guitar. I haven't even tried the first chord.

It's been way longer than I thought since I last biked. I say I stopped once, cleanly. The dates say half a year. A record keeps the months I would skip. my-activity-monitor.com/blog/what-r… #selfimprovement #journaling

I told it as one move. It took half a year. — Orne
A pool on weekends is what took the gym's place. It started half a year later, and in the version I tell, the gym ends and the swimming starts in the same breath.

While I was dealing with the incident, the note sounded reasonable. After it was resolved, I could see how much weight I'd given it. I didn't need to wait years to reread it. I needed to be out of it.

What kept me out of this field is what keeps me in it — Orne
Changing fields once cost me more than half a year and a portfolio of things nobody had asked for. I paid it, and I have not had to pay anything since.

Have you ever realized only later that you already had something saved that could have helped? A note, photo, or message you forgot you had. What was it, and how did you find it again? Especially curious about times you never thought to search for it. #Memory #Journaling

I felt so far behind for my age. — Orne
I kept feeling behind for my age, even when the numbers said I was not. The feeling was never about my life, it was about the few parts of it that come with a number attached.

At my first job, I could imagine where staying might lead. I just wasn't sure I wanted the work waiting there. Have you ever reconsidered a goal because you could see what succeeding at it would actually mean?

When You Never Defined Enough — Orne
I spent years of weekends on a personal project and years of mornings meditating. Both kept running long after I stopped knowing what either was for.

Have you reread an old worry and been surprised by how certain you sounded? I knew how mine ended. What surprised me was how little room I'd left for any other outcome while it was happening.

When you reread something you wrote years ago, what has actually been useful? Your exact words? Why you made a choice? What you knew then? What was happening around you? And what did you keep that turned out to be useless? Real examples especially welcome. #journaling

The career I worked hard for and didn't end up needing — Orne
I wanted a stable job for years and got one. A long commute, morning assembly, the month-end report. The numbers in the papers changed. The papers didn't.

Living on autopilot is most of why the stretching made it past six months. I don't decide on it any more. Usually evening, sometimes morning instead, and either way nothing gets weighed up. I still miss days. Fewer than at the start, I think.

I have been sliding over the last year. I noticed it when I tried to say what I had started my side thing for, and couldn't. Months of it, and almost nothing written down. So now I write the want down first, with a rough few months on it.

The only thing my screenshots tell me is when I took them. Scrolled back through the camera roll. Pictures of my notes, and the note has its own date, from the day I wrote it. Photos too. I've scrolled past a lot of this before. Looking a second time felt the same as the first.

Wrote tomorrow's list last night. "Photograph the receipts and throw them out" went on it. That stack could have sat there another year and nothing would have happened. Did I put it there to get it done, or to have something to cross off?
