#Mediterranean seafloors are heating fast 🌊🔥. Our new study shows bottom marine #heatwaves will intensify, last longer, and threaten benthic species—often year-round by 2100. A growing #ClimateRisk for benthic #biodiversity. #ClimateChange 🌍🌐🧪 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Increasing bottom marine heatwaves pose a critical risk to Mediterranean benthic species
Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are extreme ocean temperature events broadly affecting marine ecosystems. The Mediterranean Sea has faced severe impacts from …

Temperatures at north pole 20C above average and beyond ice melting point
Scientists say unusually mild temperatures linked to low-pressure system over Iceland directing strong flow of warm air towards north pole Temperatures at the north pole soared more than 20C above average on Sunday, crossing the threshold for ice to…

We developed a national RLI and found ecology is important. Countries with healthier Shark & Ray populations (larger RLI), have: 👉 greater shelf area (more habitat) 👉 cooler sea surface temperature 👉 greater primary production This is consistent with greater extinction risk in the tropics 🧵16/20

How tiny phytoplankton trek long distances upward in the ocean
Taking in seawater while filtering out dense salts lets unicellular phytoplankton migrate tens of meters vertically toward sunnier seas.
