"you and your books," misha whines, "trust me! i would never choose something that
might hurt you!"

but azha doesn’t relent. while yes, he does know that misha will never intentionally
hurt him, they are still lacking in experience when it comes to the forest clan’s woods!
so azha stares at misha with that particular expression that he saves for moments
just like these; when misha is acting especially petulant with him, despite all of azha’s
attempts to help misha understand why he is acting this way.

"let me check my books," he insists. he turns away from misha so that he can properly
dig through his backpack. it doesn’t take too long for azha to find the book that
he was searching for. he thumbs through the pages quickly, stubbornly ignoring how
misha wails in the background, until he eventually flips to the right page. he skims
the words quickly - someone has drawn multiple lines beneath the word poisonous.

the rest of the paragraph delves into how the mushroom is poisonous to most - if not
all - demons, but that certain beasts were able to consume it with no issues. it’s
a strange phenomenon, and while azha might want to look into it further, for now,
he needs to tell misha about his findings. "misha, it’s—!"

but before he can finish speaking, there’s a thunk! from somewhere behind azha.

immediately, he knows that it’s the sound of the mushroom dropping into the pot. azha
can feel the way his heart sinks along with the forage as it hits the bottom of
the cooking utensil, thudding against it.

"—poisonous." azha finishes his warning with a sharp exhale. a hand slides down
his face in frustration.

but the anger that has begun to bubble up in azha’s chest fades as soon as he catches
misha’s expression. her eyes are wide, fraught with guilt, as she lowers herself further
onto the ground. "i...i just thought..."

azha sighs. he crosses over to where misha is, lowering himself to the floor so that he
can sit besides her. he brushes a hand over her head, careful to avoid the metallic
butterfly that sits atop her. "i know."

there’s a larger conversation to be had - about how it isn’t a bad plan for the two
to go slowly, to double-check their choices to ensure that everything is done correctly.
they are newcomers to this land, and azha is here to learn. what learning can be done
if they just flounder their way through everything?

but any thought of broaching this particular conversation with misha in this moment
falters when azha looks up to the sky.

it’s...beautiful. greens and purples swirl overhead into a strange, snake-like pattern that
twists its way through the dark sky. it shimmers so vibrantly that for a moment, azha
wonders if he is only imagining the sight. but when stars begin to shoot across the sky,
sparking a new sense of movement that he never would have thought of on his own,
azha knows that this is truly not a dream.

he chances a glance down at misha. her pupils are blown wide, the skyward colors
reflecting in their depths, and azha stifles a giggle. it seems as though this sight is
captivating them both.

their argument has already been forgotten. it will be easy enough to boil the water
again; there is still plenty of time to cook tonight.

perhaps it is the small moments like these that makes all of azha’s travels worth it,
despite his troubles. memories like these...they would live in his heart forever.

when the sun finally disappears beneath the horizon, azha can only let out a sigh
of relief.

today has been absolutely awful.

tomorrow will bring with it new opportunities, he promises himself, but such a meager
attempt to reassure himself does nothing to satisfy the lingering doubt that has been
haunting azha all day.

despite azha’s endless attempts at optimism - that he truly was ready to travel outside
of the moon clan’s borders and experience more of the world than what his home
alone could offer his studies - worry continues to churn over and over again in azha’s
stomach. it’s an uncomfortable feeling, one that azha still hasn’t quite grown familiar
with yet considering it has only been two moons since he left home.

if only he knew back then how difficult this all would be - ack, especially today!

first, there was the fact that azha nearly lost his favorite cooking pot. though the
river was calm enough when azha first sunk the pot into the water, hoping to scrub it
clean of last night’s meal, the rapids suddenly sped up, tearing the cooking utensil from
azha’s hands. luckily, misha was quick to re-summon the pot back into her magical
storage dimension before the river stole it away, but if it wasn’t for her intervention,
it would’ve been lost! and this was before the sun even began its ascent into the sky!

then, azha had gotten into a fight with some strange, boar-like creature. it was clear
that the beast was familiar with the terrain, but azha was absolutely not; no matter
how fast azha swung, the boar was always faster, able to navigate the tangling roots
beneath its hooves with an uncanny ease. it took nearly all of azha’s focus not to trip,
and luckily, the beast eventually grew bored of the hunt and left them alone.

and then, there was the latest of azha’s troubles: at one point, the path led them to
a series of branches. while misha was short enough to walk on by beneath them, azha
was not. but his attempt to push the leaves aside was immediately met with a stinging
pain in his arm; it was likely some sort of defensive measure from the plant, but azha
had no idea it could act in such a way! he even had to crawl beneath the branches
after that! lifting up his arm still sparks a dull ache, but at the very least, it seems to
be fading.

there was absolutely nothing in any of azha’s books that could help him today.

at least now, with the moon rising over the horizon, azha can finally settle in to rest.

he has already lit tonight’s fire. now, it’s only a matter of tracking down misha so that
he can access the ingredients they have left. he vaguely recalls that it’s mostly
vegetables at this point; some leftover squash, a turnip or two...a few peppers,
maybe, but most importantly, the sweetcorn that azha has been waiting to use until
the moment was right. perhaps tonight was that moment? he could certainly use
a pick-me up.

then again, the silent conversation playing out in azha’s mind is all in vain until
misha returns.

where did she go?

azha doesn’t realize that he is humming to himself - a tune that he belatedly recognizes
to be one of theemin’s - until the bushes nearby begins to rustle. the sudden noise
startles him out of the song, but still, it’s familiar enough that azha doesn’t reach for
rubylight. and sure enough, it is misha who comes crawling out from the undergrowth
a heartbeat later. she has something in her mouth, azha thinks, but the fire is still just
a weak flame, and his familiar too far away, for him to hazard a guess at what she has.

although azha knows that it is only the two of them, and there’s no reason not
to speak to misha in the moon’s tongue, he still calls out to her in the foreign forest
language. emotion begins to grow in his throat, creeping up his throat like the vines
that wind their way up and around the nearby trees.

"what do you have there?" azha asks. he needs the practice; needs to learn how those
in the forest clan manage to speak so casually, their sentiments lacing every word
without the slightest hint of formality.

his familiar drops the...mushroom? so that she can answer him. "i found it nearby! isn’t it
pretty? with colors like these, it must have an amazing taste, yes?" then, she continues
to drag the forage closer.

once misha finally steps into the firelight, azha peers curiously at what she’s brought
him. she does have a point; the mushroom’s cap is a vivid scarlet, and even the smaller,
white dots only add to the mushroom’s charm. azha spends another heartbeat gazing

him. "wait, misha, you want to put this in tonight’s dinner?" the shock of it all startles
azha back into the moon’s tongue, but even the language’s familiarity can’t calm
him down.

immediately, azha walks over to where he left his backpack, hoisting it up so that he
can rummage through its contents. "let me check my books before you do anything,
okay?" he practically begs her.

"Yeah," came Sliv’s voice through the door, "just need a few more moments to get
more dried off...where's the hair dryer again?"

"In the closet, third shelf."

A few thuds and the sound of rummaging around lead to a 'bonk' noise, as if the
dryer landed on something hollow.

"Are... are you good in there, Sliv?" Curly was concerned since she could just fly up
to the shelf and grab it.

"Yeah," Sliv replied, "it just landed on my head. I might need help blasting myself with
this tho..."

"I'll be there in a moment."

Curly closed her notebook and locked it. No need for Sliv to read the fanfic she was
writing, right?

The first thing she saw upon opening the door were all of the towels and cleaning
supplies that Sliv was using to try and clean up on the floor. The second was the
sopping wet looking thing that was still dripping from the bath known as Sliv.

Curly wordlessly picks up the hair dryer and blasts Sliv in the face with it for a second.
"You know you could have flown up to get this, right?"

"I... may have... perhaps... forgotten a little bit..."

Curly let out a sigh saying, "We can clean this in a moment, you should dry off fully
first," before turning the dryer on full blast. It wasn't long before the room was clean
again and Sliv was dried off, her fur poofed out and making her look more like a red
and orange cotton ball.

"Thanks bestie~, I'm guessing my outfit options are in the normal spot?" Sliv asked.

"Yep, should be an easy choice today. I'll freshen up and we can head out after that."

Sliv gave a thumbs up before flying out of the room and landing in front of her options.
She stared at them all for a few moments, weighing the options. Though the pockets
were tempting, she eventually landed on the purple dress and belt option.

After what felt like an eternity to Sliv, Curly finished and came out to grab a few
things. "You ready to go, Sliv?" she asked the rather bored looking hummingpanda.

Sliv bolted upright, asking, "Are we off to your date finally?"

"Yep!" Curly said, a bit nervous but excited nonetheless.

"THEN LET’S GO!" Sliv exclaimed before hovering into the extra large purse Curly
was taking. "ONWARDS TO LOVE TIME!" She shouted, gesturing to the door with
great enthusiasm.

The trip to the bar was uneventful since Sliv stayed in the purse the entire way there.
She hated the attention outside of broadcasts and everyone always had to make the
remark that she was "smaller in person." Curly, on the other hand, was always willing
to chat with all of their fans or other random passersby, whether it was about
weather on the transit or as they moved through the street market. Sliv was sure
that she intentionally went through crowds at some points, but Curly was thriving,
and that was always fun to see.

While the purse was actually fairly comfortable to lounge in, Sliv was more than
happy to get out of it at the bar and stretch a bit before going in. Much to her
disgruntlement, she heard someone comment, "wait, that's how small they are?"
before they headed in.

It was still a bit early for Curly’s date, but she double and triple checked her phone to
make absolutely sure that this was the right place. She was anxious but excited to see
who the blind date was through the new phone app that some humans recently brought
over from Earth.

Curly was positive that this time, she would be able to have things click with a guy by
the end of the evening!

Then it was time for him to arrive. Then he was late. Then it started to get dark
outside. Then the lights came on. Curly was halfway through her drink at this point and
had been trying to get in contact with the blind date. To her dismay, she only got a
'woops' in reply, followed by her number being blocked.

Sliv flew in from the other side of the room that she had been waiting at to see how
Curly was handling the situation. Turns out, not very well at all.

Curly was on the verge of tears before Sliv suggested that they sit at the bar proper
and order some more drinks.

Curly was devastated by the whole situation and was plastered halfway through her
second drink. "WHY DID HE JUST DITCH ME?" She wailed as Sliv started her fifth
drink, unaffected by the alcohol.

"Well, he's clearly not worth it if he ditched you here before he even met you," Sliv
said, trying to calm her friend down a bit.

"BUT THIS IS THE SEVENTH ONE THIS MOON CYCLE!" Curly continued, forgetting
what an indoor voice was for now. "THE ONLY GOOD ONE WAS THAT HUMAN
ADVENTURER THAT GOT EATEN BY A DARKNESS CLAN BEAST!!" She planted
her face on the bar, sobbing. The barkeep seemed extremely disinterested in the sad
demon in front of him.

"Well... you can always try again some other time... but maybe give it a bit of a break,
ok?" Sliv said in as comforting of a voice as she could. "For all we know, that dating
app thing might just be a bad fit for you to find someone."

Curly looked up at Sliv with tears streaming down her face. "But what if I don't find
anyone ever?"

"I'm sure you'll find the right person eventually, just not right now. For now, I think we
should get you some water and think about paying the tab..." Sliv said, nervously
looking at the pile of drink glasses she collected from the time waiting for the
no-show. "It uhh... it might be a bit this time..."

Sliv’s slumber was disrupted by the sound of Curly rummaging through the closet
for something. They rolled over in their hammock to get a better look into it and
saw Curly comparing several different outfits in a mirror. Without even looking at
Sliv, she asked, "Which do you think looks better for my date tonight?"

Sliv, rapidly escaping the early wake up haze, nearly fell out of their hammock in
excitement for getting to finally choose an outfit. "THE BLUE ONE!"

Curly nodded. "So that one goes into the closet again, then."

"Huh?" Sliv was confused now.

"Sliv, buddy, your taste in venues for work are top-tier, but there's a very good
reason I never listen to your fashion advice." Curly said in a flat, matter-of-fact tone.

"I can dress myself! Watch this!" They said before flying over to a box labeled
‘Sliv’s comfy clothes’ and jumping in. A few moments later,
they reemerged from the box with the confidence that their outfit was the best ever.

Curly stood there and stared at the kaleidoscope of an outfit that Sliv wore with
concern and confusion. "You... you do realize that you're wearing a skirt as a top and
one of your mittens is a sock right...?"

"Uhhh..." Sliv stood there awkwardly for a moment.

"Wait... that's one of my socks as well, I've been looking for that for weeks!" Curly
picked up Sliv to look over the outfit that would be better suited as an art gallery
piece than wearable attire.

"I... I plead innocent on all acts of sock nabbing," they said, looking away from Curly in
an attempt to hide their guilt.

"Well, I guess if I put it back I can say it's been found again. Say, are there more of
my socks in there?"

"Uhhh... I'm not sure..." Sliv said, trying to look innocent and failing.

Curly got a waft of something foul as they discussed the legality of sock sovereignty
and pulled Sliv closer for a quick sniff. "Oh, yuck. Sliv, when was the last time
you took a bath?"

Sliv’s expression quickly became nervous. "Uhh... g-good question?"

Curly stared at Sliv, blankly contemplating how long it must have taken to smell this
rank in the first place. "You know what would be good for you?"

"N-no–" Sliv felt a layer of fear overwhelm them at the thought of what they knew
was about to leave her mouth.

"You're due for a bath~" Curly said with a bit of enthusiasm. All Sliv could utter was
a little "eep" before they started flailing around to try and escape Curly’s grasp. Much
to their own dismay, they could not escape, and after a moment or two they just
flopped on her hands, going as limp as possible.

"I can't believe we have to do this every time Sliv, it would be a lot easier if you
washed yourself regularly you know." Sliv just let out a "mreh" as Curly carried them
to the bathroom.

Curly closed the door and locked the slide lock towards the top to help prevent Sliv
from escaping during the cleaning process. "So are you going to clean yourself,
or is it going to be a fight like usual?"

Sliv laid on the floor as Curly was prepping everything for the bath. While she was
unsure of how it worked, Curly always enjoyed the frog-shaped bubbles from the
soap that she used. After the tub was full of warm, frog-bubbly water, she looked
at where Sliv was previously on the floor.

Although the spirit was gone, she knew that they had currently forgotten they can
poof around, so she just had one or two places she had to look in. The first spot
under the sink was the correct one as Sliv just stared at her for a brief moment
before trying, and failing, to hold their arms up and expand their body out to look
more threatening.

"You know that doesn't work on me right? Neither does that..." Curly said as Sliv
tried to dilate their eyes. "This is only making it more awkward for you the longer you
delay it, I promise it's not that bad to be clean."

Sliv, trying to avoid the bath as long as possible, slank further under the sink before
Curly gave up the diplomatic approach and just dragged them out, much like one would
with a reluctant cat.

"Do you want to strip before or after the bath this time?" Curly asked as Sliv flailed
around some more. "OK, into the tub you go then."

"What wh–" Sliv tried to finish the question as they found themselves dropped into
the tub and sopping wet in no time.

"I'll be back in a little bit so wash up, I'll get our outfits for today ready while you do."
As Curly closed the bathroom door behind herself, she could hear the sounds of
splashing from the bath. Probably Sliv trying to attack the bubbles or something...

Curly’s task of picking out the outfits wasn't that hard to do. She had already planned
out her outfit earlier that week, and was making adjustments as she would think about
something that would look cuter. She knew her look on the dating scene was not the
best, but she was sure this time would be different, she was sure of it! The harder part
every time was making a good outfit that Sliv would enjoy wearing, since it always
came down to how they were feeling that day.

She went back to the bathroom and peeked in for a moment to see that Sliv’s box
outfit was in a neat, if soaked, pile besides the tub and they were splashing around in
a city made of bubbles. "Hey Sliv? What's the gender of the day for you?"

Sliv stopped terrorizing the bubble denizens long enough to say, "I'm feeling girly
today," before continuing her rampage of bubble town like one of those Earth monster
kaiju movies.

"Pop off on that town, queen," Curly said, before leaving Sliv to her own devices.
Knowing the gender of the day for Sliv made it a lot easier to get some basic, yet
stylish and cute, outfits ready for her to look through.

The first she thought of was an outfit to match what Curly was going to wear,
a cute shirt and overalls. The next one was a purple dress and light purple belt,
simple yet stylish. The last was a bit trickier to piece together, but she eventually
landed on a tartan skirt with a frilled blouse and matching suit coat. It would be a lie
to say she hoped that Sliv would wear this one, but she had to leave it to the whim of
the spirit now.

Curly eventually heard Sliv cleaning up the bathroom from what she could only assume
was the colossal mess that Sliv made of the place. "You good in there?"
