Jarred makes a convincing case that they have been doing reasonable human code review of rust bun port and will only ship 1.4 when they are actually confident in it. Andrew’s post shed light on things that raise different broader concerns about bun. My Electrobun 2.0 post will clarify direction.

I just wrapped up a 3 month embedded product research engagement for Dash (next generation IDE built with Electrobun), once I get the Dash Alpha out, Electrobun 2.0 gets all my focus (new zig core is pretty solid already), then Cottontail (new tiny js runtime, modular, zig accelerated, big std lib).

Answered this on twitter a few weeks ago when the Deno team showed me what they were working on. I'm glad I'm inspiring people. Electrobun 2.0 brings the same modular innovation I shipped for the renderer (system, CEF, WGPU) to the main process enabling Deno, Bun, Node, Zig, Rust, and Go.

Not only are you selectively quoting him, but the screenshot in your tweet backs up my representation of what he said exactly. Their model can’t stop shipping segfaults and memory leaks. And they want us to believe it can ship a +1M rust, -700k zig PR with no human looking. It’s absurd.

Annectodal from working with bun myself and all the tweets from other people building on bun that have reported the same thing to Jarred. He always replies that relative to total downloads they’re decreasing. Which is a misleading stat when lots of people building complex things report an increase.

They vibe coded zig with the best anthropic models, segfaults have drastically increased since acquisition. They used the same model to rewrite it in rust claiming the model couldn’t stop shipping zig segfaults. I tell claude to copy a function in same lang and it hallucinates Make it make sense.

Anthropic is saying look we used tons of tokens to rewrite this thing in another language, and then used tons more to adversarial code review. All our customers should tokenmax too! Meanwhile they say that their model couldn’t fix zig segfaults but could rewrite the whole thing in another language?

In an instant. If they say that humans will review the code, or if anthropic releases some new non-LLM based technology that does not have the traits that absolutely require human code review of LLM generated code, then I’ll support bun as an optional runtime for the main process.

Ultimately if they ship rust bun without humans code reviewing the whole thing & maintain their policy of vibe coding bun. Then I don’t feel secure running it on my machine or my servers and quality will degrade like claude code. They gave me 6 months free max I can’t use because cc is so unstable

It’s also not too late for them to come to their senses. I had a back and forth with Jarred a couple days ago on twitter explaining my position and he still does not want humans reading all the code. He also has been unable to write a blog post justifying this recklessness. So might change his mind

I just want them to read the code. I could care less that they use AI. I use lots of tools including agents all the time. But I’m not gonna cut a release and ship a million lines of slop no one has read to end user’s machines. Anthropic making bun a marketing gimmick for tokenmaxxing is a tragedy

I believe it’s stdio from the process you spawn powered by zig underneath, but I’m also not sure if another process on your system with the right privileges couldn’t just sit in and listen. But it doesn’t matter either way cause rustbun is now just a slop fork of itself and completely unsafe to use

IPC between a webview and bun is primarily via postMessage in one direction and injecting js in the other. There’s a higher perf path using websockets where bun exposes a websocket and webview preload script connects. Both mechanisms are encrypted with per webview keys.
