Thank you ☀️ The map has folded shut. Copy after copy, it left toward walls in countries I've never been to. That was the point: a map is made to travel. Back to the quiet work now. Watercolour, gold, pressed petals. Something small, for those who opened their door. September, on your walls.
Two photos of a small watercolour painting on aged paper. A
tower-city in soft blue-green rises inside a hand-gilded gold
circle, with faint clock numerals around it. Three pressed
flower petals, each marked with a tiny red dot, are set around
the medallion, beside a red stamped seal. A fine brush rests
on the paper.

Last day to get the Labyrinth map. Tonight, this edition closes for good. One year drawn by hand, gilded by hand. After tonight, no other gilded, numbered copies will ever exist. www.yoannlossel.com/labyrinth-ma...

Uou watched this map take shape for months. Now it exists in the room: pressed into paper, edged in gold, stamped by hand, numbered. Mercator never kept his maps. He drew them so others could cross. Pre-order in bio. Until July 12. www.yoannlossel.com/labyrinth-ma...
Close-up of the lower corner of the print. A red seal stamped by
hand in lino sits beside a compass rose in red and gold. The print
is numbered by hand in gold ink. Gilded vignettes and flowing gold
vines frame the edge.Close-up of the map's right edge. Circular gold-framed medallions
show painted scenes: an inverted cathedral hung with green foliage,
a city of clocks, ruined towers. Gold vines and small flowers link
the circles across aged paper.A hand holds the edge of the print, tilting it to the light to show
an emblem blind-embossed into the paper. The relief is felt more
than seen: an ornate crest with the artist's name pressed into the
pale border.Close-up of the map's centre: a towering vertical city rising from
floating islands, haloed by golden rays in hot-foil. A line of small
text reads that they call it the centre, though the cartographer
found none.

A map kept by one hand is a leash. So I won't keep this one. One year of work. A map of a world that won't hold still. They call the Tower the centre; I found none. Drawn at its foot, with my back to it. Made to move. 🧵
An artist stands in a warmly lit studio holding a large hand-drawn fantasy map. The map is richly detailed with intricate architecture, circular inset illustrations, and gold ornamental borders. Books, sketches, ink bottles, and drawing tools cover the worktable in the foreground, while the studio walls are filled with artwork and decorative objects. The image emphasizes the scale of the map and the handmade nature of the project.

Fragments of the Labyrinth — note 14 One year. The last line of gold. The map is finished. It happened on the longest day. The light climbed as far as it could, then stopped. The map. The year. Me. All holding still at once. Soon, you'll see it too. #fantasyart #darkfantasy #worldbuilding

I found this in the margins of an old archive. Three figures. Three scythes. Something watching from above. Everything seems to be falling. Nothing falls. Les Fleurs du Mal — oil, gold leaf and hydrangea petals on Arches paper, 2014. #fantasyart #darkfantasy #worldbuilding
Oil painting depicting three female figures
standing together, each holding a scythe.
The central figure wears a crown of flowers
and faces forward. Behind them, a ghostly
monumental face emerges from a tangle of
pale branches. Gold leaf fragments catch
the light throughout the composition.
Golden floral stems run along the bottom edge.

Some days, it feels less like drawing a map and more like listening to one. The Labyrinth is too vast to reveal itself all at once. So I work slowly. Photo by Psyché Ophiuchus IX — #labyrinth #fantasy

This world has a center on the maps. I don't know if that's a cartographer's habit or a fact. Eight directions on a compass rose. Each pointing to an era. None fixed. One leads home. — Cartographer's note 10

Before the Labyrinth, I painted thresholds that smiled before closing. The Morrigan. She invites. White birds. Purple silk like blood. You walk toward the goddess, past the flowers. Later, you notice the red at your feet. A door identical to your dream. An exit that is a test.
A symbolic oil painting of The Morrigan, a mythological goddess, rendered in a classical style with gold leaf accents. She is surrounded by white birds, flowing purple fabric, and floral elements. The scene feels ceremonial and unsettling, suggesting a ritual space between beauty and danger. Subtle red tones appear near the lower part of the composition, hinting at violence or sacrifice. The atmosphere is dreamlike, mythological, and psychologically charged, evoking thresholds and illusion.

Before the Labyrinth, there was Diane. Hunter and hunted. Neither mortal. Condemned to replay the same scene forever. A world where the cycle has no moral. Only a rhythm. Diane - 2013
A circular medallion painting in graphite and gold leaf
depicts a young archer, quiver on her back and bow at her side,
leaning tenderly toward a white deer.
Their faces almost touch: hunter and hunted
in a gesture closer to recognition than pursuit.

The ornate gold frame surrounding the medallion
shows the same deer in motion, mid-leap,
woven into foliage, arrows, and flowering vines.
A second figure watches from the upper right corner,
partially obscured.

Small blue flowers and a gilded emblem
are scattered across the composition.
The palette moves from deep black borders
to silvered grays at the center,
with touches of pale blue and warm gold throughout.

Before the Labyrinth, there was Thanatos. 2013. Graphite, gold leaf and hydrangea petals on Arches paper. Looking back at this piece now, I realize I was already circling the same threshold: the moment when identity loosens, when something crosses, and the masks no longer hold.
An Art Nouveau-inspired depiction of Thanatos, the Greek god of death, standing at the center of a dark symbolic composition. Gold dust falls from his hands while a skeletal horse collapses beneath him into ash and drifting petals. Surrounding panels depict funerary imagery, flames, moths, and celestial feminine figures. The artwork is rendered in graphite, gold leaf, and hydrangea petals on textured paper, blending mythological symbolism with themes of transformation, passage, and memory.

Cartographer’s note: At first, I was just painting around the map. Trying to keep things contained. But the edges don’t hold. Each circle shifts the balance. Not enough to see it. Enough to feel it. The Labyrinth isn’t drawn. It reacts. How would you map something that refuses to stay still?

Dear reader,
You stayed with the archives.
Wise.
Mercator is at his desk. The documents are in order. The lamp is on.
Nothing has changed. Not in any way you would notice.
Selm is still working downstairs. You can almost hear it — a faint vibration through the floor. Diligent. Thorough. The kind of person who doesn't leave until the work is done.
Everything is exactly where it should be.
A word has appeared, though.
A single word, in someone else's handwriting.
It probably means nothing.
Continue.
And when you reach the end — four paths this time.
Choose carefully.
Or don't.

Before the Labyrinth, there was Beowulf. Made in 2018 for Easton Press. Mixed media on Arches paper. I was already asking: Does the hero seek the legend, or is he called by it? I still don’t have an answer.
A dark, ornate illustration bordered by intricate copper-toned patterns resembling intertwined vines and mythic figures. At the center, a lone cloaked figure stands on a rocky outcrop beside a still body of water, holding a staff. A faint golden halo encircles their head, casting a soft glow.

Across the water, a steep hill rises toward a large, isolated hall or temple, its silhouette sharp against a muted, gold-dusted sky. A pale, full moon hangs behind the structure, partially veiled by drifting textures of black and gold pigment. Small points of warm light flicker along the hillside, suggesting distant fires or dwellings.

The overall palette is restrained—charcoal blacks, ash greys, and burnished gold—giving the scene a quiet, ancient, and dreamlike atmosphere. The composition feels still, yet tense, as if the landscape itself is watching the solitary figure.A dark, ornate illustration bordered by intricate copper-toned patterns resembling intertwined vines and mythic figures. Albâtre — now part of the Labyrinth Some figures were already there. Waiting to be found. I didn't know it then, but this wasn't just a painting. It was a crossing point. Not a symbol. Not a creature. A threshold. Albâtre. You don't look for him. You see him. Or you don't.
A detailed graphite and gold leaf artwork showing a pale, ghostlike white stag standing atop ancient ruins in a dark, mist-filled forest. Its antlers are large and branching, partially gilded with gold that catches the light. Behind it, shadowy trees and fractured structures emerge from darkness, with glowing gold textures breaking through the background. The stag appears still and silent, almost unreal, as if it exists between presence and absence. The composition blends fine drawing, organic textures, and symbolic elements, evoking a timeless, otherworldly presence.

Mapping the edges. Some towers don’t belong to the center… but they still hold something.
Close-up of a graphite drawing in progress. An artist’s hand uses a mechanical pencil to refine a tall, detailed tower surrounded by dense, layered architecture. The structure rises from a fragmented landscape with floating rock formations, suggesting a surreal, unstable world. Fine textures of graphite and paper are visible, highlighting the precision and depth of the work.

Labyrinth — Cartographer’s note I wasn’t supposed to paint this one. It wasn’t just a refuge. It held something. We found it. We stayed there, for a while. Maybe too long. High in the trees, it was already changing. We saw it begin to slip away. So I kept it here. Not as a place, as a memory.

Fragments of the Labyrinth. You don’t find them. You arrive as they emerge. Each circle reveals a place. Each place shifts as you look at it. The map is unfinished. Because the world keeps moving.
Close-up of a detailed hand-drawn map in progress on textured paper. Several circular frames contain intricate scenes of the Labyrinth, including a dense, vertical city of towers, arches, and stairways suspended in space, with bridges and layered architecture. Below, another circle shows a distant rocky landscape with two small figures. A hand holds a fine brush near the drawing, adding delicate details. The style evokes antique cartography with soft tones and precise linework. The map is unfinished, with empty space around the circles.

The Love of Bastet — oil and gold leaf on paper, 2022 Final version. A tribute to Ferdinand Keller and Böcklin. Bastet waits. The rest happens in the gold.
Oil painting on paper titled The Love of Bastet (2022). A dark, symbolist-inspired scene referencing Böcklin and Ferdinand Keller. At the center stands a stylized feline goddess figure, upright and frontal, framed by deep shadows and architectural elements reminiscent of a tomb or sacred threshold. The palette is muted, with warm browns and greens. A decorative gold ornamental border surrounds the composition, filled with intricate intertwined motifs blending Egyptian-inspired lotus shapes and Nordic-style animal forms. The gold leaf catches the light against the darker tones of the painting.

The improvised cartographer I am. A photo of the map, inside a photo, inside the map. At this point, I’m not sure who’s mapping whom.
A wide view of an artist working in his studio. Seated on a wooden chair, he faces a large, illuminated drawing board holding an expansive, unfinished map drawn in pencil and washes. The map depicts a fragmented city suspended in space, with towers, bridges, and architectural masses floating amid mist, arranged around large circular outlines. The room is warm and intimate, filled with wooden furniture, shelves, tools, and scattered art materials. The walls are covered with ornate, patterned wallpaper. In his hands, the artist holds a smartphone, photographing the artwork; on the phone’s screen, the same scene appears again, creating a recursive image of the map within the map. The atmosphere feels quiet, meticulous, and slightly uncanny, as if documenting the act of mapping a world while being inside it.

"Lilith in the Valley of a Thousand Sculptures" — detail. A closer look at the gesture. See the full image in the previous post.
[ENGLISH ALT-TEXT]
A surreal artwork in warm sepia and gold tones.
A masked woman, Lilith, kneels on a wooden scaffold and carves a marble wall covered with the relief of a tree heavy with fruit. A golden serpent winds around her, its sinuous body catching the light. Below, the fragmented head of a colossal statue lies half-buried in stone. Thin lines of gold run through the composition like veins of memory, linking Lilith’s gesture, the serpent, and the fallen face. The atmosphere is quiet, sacred, and timeless.

A work-in-progress illustration seen from above. On warm-toned paper, a dense, hand-drawn city appears suspended like an island or fragment, rendered in graphite and ink. Tall towers, bridges, and clustered buildings rise vertically, some fading into mist or shadow. Small touches of gold leaf catch the light on a few structures. In the lower right corner, a hand holding a fine brush is adding dark washes to the drawing. At the top of the image, a metal tool and small pieces of gold leaf rest on the paper, revealing the artist’s workspace and the meticulous, slow process of making the map.

Here is the second piece created for Labyrinth. A scale model of a boat — composite, hybrid, labyrinthine. Inspired by the chébec, infused with fragments of other eras and cultures. This vessel is part of a much larger story. The origin fragment is now available on Patreon (free).
A detailed photograph of a hand-crafted scale model boat held at chest height by a bearded person wearing a white shirt and deep red trousers.
The boat is made of wood, fabric, and thread, with a weathered, aged appearance. Its hull is dark and worn, showing fine plank details. The sails are irregular, stitched from rough fabric, marked with red symbols and stains, and connected by a dense network of ropes and rigging.
Two small wooden structures rise from the deck, resembling lookout platforms or cabins on stilts, giving the vessel a fragile, improvised architecture. Threads and cloth strips hang loosely, suggesting damage, ritual markings, or long abandonment.
The boat rests carefully in both hands, emphasizing its small scale and the delicacy of its construction. The background is softly blurred, showing a patterned wall, which draws attention to the object.
Overall, the image conveys a sense of a mythical, fragmented vessel — part ship, part relic — evoking themes of journey, exile, and transformation.

“The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife” (2021) Ink, gold leaf, and hydrangea petals on cream paper. My homage to Hokusai’s iconic print, now included in the upcoming exhibition “Japanese Fantasies in the Time of Félicien Rops” at the Félicien Rops Museum in 2025–2026. Honored to be part of it.
A delicate figure of a woman with pale skin and flowing pink hair lies in a dreamlike pose, surrounded by golden octopus tentacles. Soft hydrangea petals float around her. The drawing combines white ink, gold leaf, and vibrant pink lines on warm cream paper, evoking sensuality, fantasy, and homage to Hokusai.
