For the people of Samadua, protecting the forest means defending an economy that already supports them. It also means having a say in what happens to their land, and ensuring their children and grandchildren can continue living from it.

Mining activities and exploration plans are raising concerns about the future of this land. Residents fear that forest clearing and disturbance in the upper watershed could affect water supplies and increase erosion, flooding and landslides—with consequences reaching farms and homes downstream ⚠️

For more than three decades, nutmeg farming has helped sustain families, with gardens passed down through generations.

What happens to a community’s livelihoods when the forests sustaining them are opened up to mining?🌱💥 🇮🇩 In Samadua, Aceh, Indonesia, communities depend on the forests of the Leuser Ecosystem for water, food and income. 🧵👇

ANVIK is raising funds for bail, legal expenses and other needs of the Kasibu defenders. If you can contribute, use the QR code in the final slide for local donations or visit paypal.me/ANVIK2026 to donate inter nationally. Sharing this call also helps.

With three separate cases now filed in court, the recommended bail is ₱36,000 per person for each charge: ₱864,000 for all eight defenders. According to ANVIK, the community is watching for possible arrest warrants ⚠️🚨

Yes To Life No To Mining @ylnm.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
100
Yes To Life No To Mining @ylnm.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

Yes To Life No To Mining @ylnm.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

Yes To Life No To Mining @ylnm.bsky.social · 10/09/2026

Communities should not have to fight for more than a decade for those responsible for destruction to be held accountable. Justice delayed cannot become the business model of the mining industry.

This is a significant step in breaking the cycle of impunity that so often follows mining disasters. But accountability is far from complete: Vale and BHP, the companies that own Samarco, remain acquitted in this criminal case 🔍
100
Yes To Life No To Mining @ylnm.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
⚖ A Brazilian federal appeals court has now convicted Samarco and three former managers, overturning their previous acquittal. The ruling found that the company knew about serious risks at the dam and ignored technical warnings while pursuing increased production and profits.

Nearly 11 years after the Fundão dam collapse, Samarco has finally been criminally convicted ✊📣 In 2015 the collapse in Mariana, killed 19 people, destroyed communities and sent millions of cubic metres of mining waste through the Rio Doce. Its impacts are still being lived today. 🧵👇

During our recent webinar with AidWatch, speakers from Malaysia, Japan and Australia traced these connections — from radioactive waste in Kuantan to the growing military-industrial demand for so-called “critical minerals”, and to movements organising across borders to resist them.

Yes To Life No To Mining @ylnm.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
This is what militarised extractivism looks like: mining, geopolitical competition and military expansion becoming increasingly intertwined, while the environmental and social costs are pushed onto particular communities and territories 💥

Yes To Life No To Mining @ylnm.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
At the same time, Japan and the United States have poured public money into Lynas to secure rare earth supplies outside China — and Pentagon funding is now supporting the production of elements used in fighter jets, missile guidance systems, night vision, submarines and other military technologies.

☣️ Rare earths are mined in Australia and processed in Malaysia, where communities have been left to deal with millions of tonnes of hazardous waste, including radioactive material containing thorium and uranium.
