I generally eschew absolutes, but use one when describing a cornerstone of my personal leadership philosophy: Trust. If we can’t trust each other, we are useless to each other. From interpersonal to international relations, establishing, sustaining, & strengthening trust is essential mutual work.

Numerous people & organizations (many of them Christian) claim to believe in servant leadership, but don't practice servant leadership in a concrete way -- & all too often don't even know the origins or characteristics of servant leadership. greenleaf.org/what-is-serv...

Each of us is a leader in our own way, starting w/ leading ourselves. Developing as leaders takes deliberate thought & practice. Here at YL2L we will focus on one leadership trait or value each week to help w/ practical application. If there is a trait you would like us to explore, let us know!

When helping people develop as leaders, I prefer to focus on positive traits & values, but to fully understand the positives we must also explore the negatives. This week I've been focusing on integrity. The dark side or absence of integrity often involves lies or lying.

At its most basic, to have integrity means to do the right thing even when no one is watching & even when (especially when) that is hard & involves risk. When you prioritize & practice integrity, you don't need to declare it. Others will recognize it as a trait that defines & describes you.

Having integrity doesn't require perfection. It requires striving to be true to your word & values. You will make mistakes. That is ok. Own them. Explain & correct -- not excuse -- them in a way that others can understand, accept, & forgive. Then feaffirm your commitment to integrity & carry on.

No flashy art or catering to algorithms, just words in plain language. (Videos coming, though they will also lack flash). Integrity is uprightness of character, soundness of moral principles, & absolute honesty. If integrity is an important leadership trait, one cannot support leaders who lack it.

It’s your life to lead. Leadership is not merely positional & top down. It is also situational, up, & across. But leadership starts within & we are each leaders in our own way. If we practice the traits we value, we can be (& choose) the leaders we would want to follow. Let’s get there together.
