and even if they did... it wouldn't be. sorry, man: even if I couldn't tell the difference with my ears, it matters to me that people made it. especially when it comes to art and media. it's part of the soul of it. a blood diamond is still a blood diamond. the card my kid drew is THEIR art.

ours passed yesterday. it's hard. I'm so sorry you're going through it, too. just want you to know you're not alone and... it's hard. losing family is hard.

"Why should my tax dollars go to giving houses to people who can't afford them?" Why should MY tax dollars should go to satisfying your desire to see desperate people living desperate lives? I'd rather save money and solve the problem, rather than spend money to exacerbate it.

Already noticed some AAA games from the last few years slipping in quality due to the attack on labourers by the wealthy class and uh... I think gamers need to know it's gonna keep deteriorating in small ways, not a big bang Games will still drop for a while, but they'll be quietly worse

the cash, hands down. the potential debt exceeds my personal capacity to pay and exceeds the guaranteed reward by 20x. if I could afford the debt, maaaybe I would think harder about the gamble. but probably would land on the guaranteed income either way.

pausing to complement your colors, and I really enjoy how you do proportions - lovely balance of stylized and natural. thank you for sharing your work and art! imo this piece came out wonderful - you added some art sunshine to at least this internet stranger's timeline, and it's appreciated. :)

as someone who used to work in trust and safety at Facebook / Meta, I sometimes think "I couldn't possibly despise Meta leadership more than I already do." and then, somehow, they prove me wrong again. and again.

answering "yes" to this question immediately disqualifies you from being an expert, so the subhead makes no sense.

just pausing to say thank you for sharing your voice, work, and art with us. you add sunshine to the timeline, and it's truly appreciated. I also love how you do figures - feels like a mix of anime and quirky modern western cartoons (eg, owl house) and yet also unique to you. lovely and charming!

i adore a great deal about your art (the characters are absolute sunshine). but I especially want to shout out how good you are at creating a scene that has a coherent emotion just baked into it. like, that beach picture radiates peaceful cheer in the same way that oven-fresh cookies smell good.

even if they weren't drivers of unkindness (of acting or supporting overt transphobia), they were drivers of indifference and of looking away (or not looking at all).

Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
both of these removed subtle (but big) feelings that didn't make me ACT explicitly transphobic, but that probably added friction to my choices to listen to, learn about, engage, or support transgender people, community, and causes.

in my case, this largely reaffirmed my cis identity to myself (though it did also help me challenge what that meant). but more importantly, it taught my brain that there was nothing unsafe about this, and helped me build empathy with folks on those journeys.

Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
I just personally found this practice to be a powerful part of my personal experience in breaking down my own implicit / unconscious sources of transphobia. at least for me, I think one of those sources was a fear of the question itself. this practice helped remove that fear.

I don't disagree with this, but do want to add: I think it's good to intentionally take moments and ask yourself if you might be trans, and to imagine yourself as the opposite gender or agender. Not because I think it's likely you'll be surprised by the answer! (cont)

lol, don't worry. it's tame. I just read this as "getting (sick with) the bug of the month (that the kids brought home)".

this is helpful. but I can tell I have the brain of a parent-with-kids-in-school, because I read this very differently than intended, lol.

in addition to being lies made in bad faith, this is such a bleak worldview. "THEY are hurt, therefore WE have won." even if you believe that the destruction and suffering was worthwhile (it wasn't) or necessary (it wasn't)... what did it make better? (nothing - it made the world worse)

in other words: AI works best when it... is developed the way ML is meant to be developed, lol. which could be achieved with much more focused, less expensive, and more accurate ML solutions.
1204
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
and when does it sometimes work kinda ok? when it's used by experts on their area of expertise... esp if the use is focused on (relatively) structured and context-insensitive inputs (eg, code)... and esp if developers of AI tend to be familiar with or sensitive to those use cases (eg, CODE).

Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
put together, it encourages ongoing and at scale compute to try to get a non-specialized tool to do stuff it wasn't really designed for (since it wasn't designed for much in particular).
1132
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
and it is presented confidently to a general audience, with fig leaves for attempts to educate and convey limits (at best, usually just enough to limit liability; at worst, marketing to make AI seem like more than it is).
1142
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
solve-anything AI is built on tools and methods that are inherently NOT meant to be solve-anything. it's built at a scale and speed that makes the needed expert curation, review, and context understanding impossible.
1205
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
because of those constraints, good ML is rarely power or compute hungry at anything like the scale of "AI". high compute is usually restricted to development, maintenance, or targeted runs limited people or orgs (the audience / consumers of the tool).
1252
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
good ML: * carefully designed for narrow contexts (or with awareness of context limits) * designed by ML and topical experts, with expert curated data and expert reviewed outputs * designed for specific needs and consumers, and kept up to date for both * clear training / comms on use and limits

Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
they're happily dragging a genuinely powerful and valuable discipline and collection of tools into the mud to break things and make money. and they either understand ML enough to know it and they don't care, or they're ignorant (and probably don't care or can't see it).

Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 08/06/2026
I'll take this a step further: most of the AI proponents I see - especially with social platforms - don't understand the methods, theories, debates, and philosophies of machine learning either (aka - the three raccoons raccoons tech companies are shoving into a trenchcoat and calling AI).

it's all politics. and that's ok. we need to stop letting people hide their politics - and / or their disinterest in participating in or supporting their communities - behind vague claims of being "apolitical".
000
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
instead we pretend that having a heterosexual romance in a show is not political, but having a transgender character is political. no, they're both "political" and if you think one is ok and the other isn't SAY IT WITH YOUR CHEST, YOU TRANSPHOBIC COWARD.
100
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
they're just arguing about what politics get to be seen as so normal or acceptable that they FEEL invisible. are there beliefs and politics that SHOULDN'T be tolerated? YES, I THINK SO. and we should have honest conversations about what we allow (and how it gets represented).
110
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
the folks arguing about keeping "politics" out of X or Y thing are really just saying "keep belief, group, process, or organization that seems bad OR uncomfortable OR unusual TO ME out of it." there are plenty of politics in the thing no matter what!
100
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
sure, you can argue that it is more political when those processes and organizations get more formalized. but if you have beliefs about what you or other people should do or be able to do, how communities should be managed, how harms should be addressed, etc: THOSE ARE POLITICAL BELIEFS.
110
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 03/06/2026
the "I don't do politics" thing is so hollow, empty to me. you ARE part of communities. EVERY community creates processes and organizations for communicating, understanding, negotiating, and organizing with itself and other communities. those processes? politics. those organizations? political.

and if you are on the left and you didn't vote for Harris: I don't blame you! we shouldn't have to vote for the "lesser evil", esp one that actively doesn't respect us or try to meet us.
050
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
everyone on the "left" that I know voted for Harris. did we champion her or defend her? no, and why would we? what were we offered directly or as a compromise that would earn that? we're just as valid as the mythical centrist, AND WE DON'T REQUIRE SHIT COMPROMISES TO "APPEAL" TO US.
140
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
"the LEFT helped Trump win!" no they didn't. a broken capital-owned media, abused and capital-influenced government, and Democrats did tho. Democrats in particularly assumed the left would support them (as always), and so were fine actively ignoring or disparaging them.
140
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
why would I vocally support a candidate who doesn't rep me or my community? no thanks: I'll criticize you and push for someone better, and if that hurts your campaign THAT'S ON YOU. you might get my "least evil" vote if there are no other options, but you don't deserve my respect or work for that.
140
Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
wild too how little folks seem to understand talking to power. will i vote for the last shitty option when we get there? ya. but until we get there: NO I WON'T. you want my support? earn it. you want me to defend you? earn it. you want my commitment to vote for you? earn it.

Brian Waismeyer @yetanotherbrian.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
ya, grew up in Minnesota and I've always just assumed that "ope" (not really a thing) was how people heard Minnesotans say "oops" or "oh" (ya, pretty common and we kinda drop the "s"). now, if you wanna talk "duck, duck, grey duck" or "hot dish"... those topics got some meat on them (pun intended).
