Just got repeated "messages failed to load" errors in age-restricted Discord channels. I suspect I've already been classified as unconfirmed (AKA "we can't be *really* sure, oops") by the new age estimation system. If this is true, I would probably have to say goodbye to most of my Discord activity.

Found a file with an old attempt to (re)calculate what the UFCC line might have looked like if the Cup of the Alps was considered competitive. Now working on continuing this project. It's not very far through yet and I wonder where it goes. I recall this line ending up lost in Yugoslavia last time.

Probably-unpopular hot take: anyone with an account (on any service) created 18 years ago or earlier should be automatically assumed to be 18+ (i.e. eligible for adult content) for the purposes of that service, without having to provide ID proof.

NGL it's a bit fascinating that today is a Really Important Day on a level that's supposed to come up like a couple times per generation if even that, and nevertheless Donald Fredovich &co have done a surprisingly good job of making me Not Actually Care (very much) about that particular anniversary.

The problem with the (increasingly common) "Green Line or nothing" stance is that there is effectively no way Israel would give up Latrun Junction without either a full-on military occupation, or utter collapse for some other reason. Most other options are negotiable. Latrun would cut off Jerusalem

Still slowly working on the obscure scenario, so I'm posting another one for discussion instead... What if Catherine of Aragon gets pregnant again sometime around Field of the Cloth of Gold, and gives birth to a healthy son in 1521? How would that change English, Spanish, and Portuguese succession?

I considered "what if Russia didn't surrender in WWI", but we've rehashed that multiple times already. So instead, have a different PoD I've been thinking about lately: Ivan Semyonovich Kurakin, in honorary exile as voivode of Tobolsk, gets a bad cold and dies in his first Siberian winter, in 1615.

Now I wonder how long it took British people to get used to "the King" in the early 1900s. Were there people back then saying he was clearly Prince Bertie? [...what *was* his pre-king name?] (I originally posted this clipping back in 2022, and was told it was "weirdly and comfortingly relatable".)
It sounds strange in British ears to hear people talking of "our King." How few, if any, British subjects there are alive who have had occasion to use the word. It has been Queen all the time; and we had grown so much used to regarding the dead Lady as a permanent part of the British Empire that it is difficult as yet to think of Britain without its Queen.

[a clipping from The Scottish Referee, 25 January 1901]

Honest question: what *is* the intended benefit of the Israeli opposition merger. I don't get it at all? Given Israel's electoral system, party mergers of any kind seem to be strict net negatives unless there was a serious chance of one or both of the parties involved not passing the 3.25% barrier.

I think by now I've mostly memorized how to spell "revelation", but I still get caught up by sub(s)tract and diac(t)ritic [seriously, *why* do I want that extra T in there? it's not just me], and i still default to "geniune" and "recurrest" (and a few other wrong spellings I can't think of offhand).

I've been thinking about genealogical heir lines again recently (it used to be a pretty strong interest of mine back in the '10s, but I've not been as active about it lately), and now I'm considering starting a Tumblr sideblog focused on such lines. For my audience: do you think that's a good idea?

Weird question. I was partway through writing up this route when I realized that there's a way to get a *smaller* nonregional gap, but it requires taking a 22 km hike (no through trains) rather than a nonregional train. If the hike can fit between 20:13 and 5:47, that actually ends up a day faster.

anyone else seriously annoyed by Bluesky's new image view mode which tends to show one image, a sliver of another, and no indication you're supposed to click and drag (!!) to see the rest (well, that or expand and then click the arrows. in either case you cannot tell in advance how many there are)

Luigi Mangione did not kill Brian Thompson. The people in charge of that case just really didn't feel like figuring out who *did* do it (and TBH probably had no idea how), so they found someone who looked kinda similar and planted some random framing evidence (pretty incompetently at that, it seems)

On that note, I found out a while back that *apparently* descendants of the Russian sister are still around? A lot of sources claim they died out in the early 17th century, but I found a descent that seems to work, and so far I hadn't been able to disprove it even though no one seems to mention it.

TIL that actually... the shape and color *are* in fact pretty close to the actual likely intended flower? it's said to be a pink flower because the original source of the emoji had since switched to a (differently styled) pink flower, but no, actually the flowers do look pretty much like this 💠

note the similarity of the square four-petaled flowers to the 💠 emoji (diamond with a dot)

The word "reboot" comes (via "boot up") from a story about Baron Münchhausen pulling himself up by his own bootstraps, applied metaphorically to the computer startup process (the same metaphor underlies "bootstrapping" as in the method of setting up an industry)

I have a question relating to this. (I tried to ask it in other places, but I'm now mostly out of options.) My inclusion of C class trains was based on the China entry in the Wikipedia page for regional rail (image in post). This left my itinerary in somewhat of an awkward situation regarding Laos.
"Suburban Railway [zh]" (S-series trains), not common. "Inter-City EMU [zh]" trains (C-series trains) may be more frequent than Suburban Railways and are used for commuting.

I'm not sure if I could find it again, but I remember encountering a pretty detailed debate on Twitter a few years ago about how it's absolutely required just for accessibility reasons alone. (though they might not have meant it *quite* as all-encompassingly as you did. still agree though)

me: why is it latus recti and not lati rectum Google: ...it's neither. both of these are completely wrong.
EXERCISE 5-11 As with the parabola, we can define the latus recti [sic] of an ellipse as the segments through the foci parallel to the minor axis with endpoints on the ellipse. Find the length of each of these segments in terms of a and b.

I would say that the world's softest science fiction is Ijon Tichy/Star Diaries. Past that level it's extremely hard to argue that it's still sci-fi *at all*. (I'm ready to be persuaded by examples of actually softer sci-fi, but Alice in Wonderland sure isn't it.) (I guess Cyberiad might qualify?)

I changed my handwriting [in Russian] from connected/cursive to unconnected around 2006, because my cursive was faster but so illegible that people were actively complaining about how illegible it was. (I shortly found new and fascinating ways to make my unconnected handwriting just as illegible.)

As promised, I'm posting (slowly) the itinerary for the theoretical regional rail (and hike, and briefly bus) trip between Portugal and Singapore. Starting on April 1st, that is, a few minutes from now - though given some of the Spanish trains, it's possible to start on the 4th and join up anyway!

Good news: despite an injury-time goal, Kosovo have made it past Slovakia, and would now play in the final qualification playoffs. Bad news: the Romanians lost, so Kosovo's opponent in that final would be the much more formidable Turkish team. (At least they're going to get a home game there...)

Counterpoint: if your opponent is *sufficiently* better, then with normal play you'll get a ~guaranteed loss, but if you bait them with an unusual move (or several), you might just be able to get them into a position where they don't know what's going on either, and then your chance is better than 0

My take on the 9 game challenge. It was surprisingly hard to even find 9 games that I liked *at all*; I don't really do video games... One of those is a game I love as a concept but have never played - can you guess which? Notably missing: Nu Pogodi (no image), and my *actual* top favorite, Q04B.
Top row: Alpha Centauri, Civ II: Test of Time, The Settlers II
Middle row: EU3: Divine Wind, Sandcastle Builder, Heroes of Might and Magic III
Bottom row: Angry Birds: Star Wars, Infectonator: World Dominator, Cities Skylines

I don't think I've ever ran into unwanted followers, but it's really unfortunate that Bluesky's block system makes it extremely easy to block someone over a misunderstanding (often just a single badly phrased post) but almost impossible to ever find out that it actually *was* just a misunderstanding

I didn't grow up reading Isaac Bashevis Singer (until roughly last year I had no idea who he was) but I definitely did think of Rothschilds as one of the, like, most famous rich families? though I also thought they lived back in the 19th century (and I *might* have confused them with Rockefellers)
