I keep 60+ neo-grotesks on hand. Fewer than a third have vertical metrics that actually center a label on a button. Here’s how to spot the ones that do—and 10 Inter and SF alternatives that qualify. yeptype.com/article/inte...

How to choose a UI font (and 10 Inter alternatives)
Tired of Inter being everywhere? Two real criteria—cap-centered vertical metrics and a tall x-height—for choosing a UI font, plus 10 alternatives from independent foundries.

When to use retalic fonts
When to use retalic (reversed italic) fonts in branding, book covers, UI design, and motion — with real examples, and when to skip them

Unifora is uniwidth. That means each character takes up the same horizontal space, whatever weight or slant you pick. A Thin Retalic “U,” a Bold upright “U,” and a Black Italic “U”—all exactly the same width.

Square dots, square vibes. Unifora’s ss01 swaps every round dot for a square one.

See the difference? Left one’s dancing. Right one’s steady, thanks to Unifora’s tabular figures (tnum).

Slant goes both ways. −18° italic on one side, +18° retalic on the other. 36° total, no stops in between.

3 things I learned designing a uniwidth font www.reddit.com/r/typography...
Wireframe diagram of the letters G, a, and g in Unifora, each shown at multiple weights stacked on top of each other as contour lines. Vertical guides mark the advance width boundaries, showing all weights land at identical widths.Two-panel diagram. Left panel: the letter i shown in Thin and Black weights, with red hatching filling the excess side-bearing space, illustrating that a wide Thin i leaves awkward spacing. Right panel: once i side-bearings are resolved, n and Black n are drawn to fit within the same total width without red hatching.Four pairs of AV in Unifora: Thin upright, Black upright, Thin italic, Black italic. Each pair shows the same −40 kern value marked in red, demonstrating that kerning must stay identical across all masters in a uniwidth family.Top row: three H glyphs — retalic, upright, and a comma following upright — showing that H spacing stays even when slanted because both stems run full height. Bottom row: three O glyphs. The slanted O has red hatching showing uneven space. The middle O shows the alternate comma designed to compensate. The right O shows the default upright comma for comparison.

The fonts used on yaroslav.io are Unifora by @yeptype.bsky.social (main font) and Berkeley Mono "TX-02" (mono) by U.S. Graphics Company. They make a great pair, WDYT? Both available as variable fonts. Unifora pricing is a steal.

17px is the sweet spot for Unifora and Innovator Grotesk. At that size, capitals land exactly on the pixel grid. I pre-calculated other sizes where the same thing happens, each paired with a matching line height. Find the full table in the fonts’ user manuals.
Innovator Grotesk letters "Hn" rendered at 17 px and magnified 1600%, showing capital H strokes aligned precisely to the pixel grid with no sub-pixel blurring on edges.

Unifora user manual — Fallback font metrics section: introductory paragraph explaining CSS font metric overrides to minimize layout shift, followed by a code block showing a tuned Arial @font-face definition with ascent-override 93.4%, descent-override 24.2%, line-gap-override 0%, size-adjust 102%, and a body rule setting the font-family stack to Unifora Standard with the fallback.

I spent 2 years on a single constraint: every weight, every width, every slant—same character widths. Today Unifora is out. A uniwidth variable sans-serif superfamily. 135 fonts. Industrial edge, architectural precision. Let me walk you through it.

Unifora feels like a natural match for a car brand. The slanted styles suggest motion, and tabular figures keep live numbers easy to read. (Sound on)

Currency symbols in Unifora are a bit smaller than the numbers, which helps prices look more balanced.

Pick a paid font if you want your product to stand out. Most your competitors use free fonts and end up looking the same. Spend a few dollars on type, and even plain black text on white will feel distinct.

What’s wrong with these viral typography tips? I get it, it’s a popular format that drives engagement. But as a type designer, I can tell you: following this kind of advice blindly can hurt your typography. Below are 4 strategies for setting letter spacing that will help improve your design work.

This is a classic example of optical correction for intersecting lines in font design. To make the diagonal appear straight at the center of the cross, the type designer slightly breaks and shifts it inward.

Airbnb just unveiled their new typeface. For iconic companies, creating custom fonts isn’t just a design choice, it’s a strategic one. When all you have is black text on a white background, a distinctive typeface becomes one of the most powerful ways to stand out.

Arguing over whether 16px font size is better than 15 or 17 doesn’t really make sense: Inter and Times New Roman at the same font size will produce different actual character heights anyway. Use any font size, even decimals, as long as the text is large enough to read comfortably.
