[logo: OII Europe.]‣ Intersex Youth and Sport.

What are the obstacles affecting participation of intersex youth in sport? For example, the policy introduced in 2026 by the IOC entitled “Protection of the Female (Women's) Category in Olympic Sport” endorses mandatory genetic screening for women athletes. The IOC praises its new policy to be based on the latest scientific evidence, however the policy lacks methodological transparency, meaning: this eligibility tool is flawed.

In higher levels of sport, regulations have historically coerced young women with naturally high testosterone levels into unwanted surgeries (removal of reproductive organs) or forced hormonal suppression just to retain eligibility. These are not medical treatments but rather a punishment for bodies that don't fit the binary. That is not fairness, it's a violation of basic human rights.

New regulations such as the July 2025 World Athletics Eligibility Criteria and the new 2026 IOC guidelines, blatantly ignore the impact that these rules will have, specifically on intersex youth. For example, the policy introduced in 2026 by the IOC entitled “Protection of the Female (Women's) Category in Olympic Sport” endorses mandatory genetic screening for women athletes. ‣ Intersex Youth and Sports.

Sport is supposed to be fun. It also offers a sense of community, teaches us about bravery, dedication and teamwork, helps us to build essential social skills, and dispel entrenched notions about the capacities and limits of the body.

But intersex youth face very specific barriers in their right to participation in sports on an equal footing to their endosex peers. What are those barriers?

Body shaming.
Blaming individuals for not meeting expectations based on sex, gender as well as body norms within school sports.
Invasive medical exams.
Humiliating sex-testing.
Rules written to exclude them from competing in the category they identify with.

These are all systematic exclusions.

Persistent gender norms in institutions, schools, clubs and families shape who is seen as belonging in which sport. Many intersex youth respond by self-censoring or quitting entirely.
This should not be happening.

Sport is recognised under international human rights law as part of the right to take part in cultural life.

Everyone deserves access to sport without invasive testing, without discrimination, without fear.

OII Europe stands against the increasing over-policing, medicalisation, and pathologisation of intersex youth's bodies under the guise of fairness.

Requirements to invade peoples' bodies affects everyone's bodily autonomy negatively.
Attempting to biologically classify and categorise people is a dangerous and slippery slope.Intersex Youth and Sports.

And that we, as individuals, are enabled to take care for our actual physical needs, if there are any. Instead of other people doing that for us without our consent from their non-intersex perspective.”

How can (dis)ability and being intersex intersect in important ways?Intersex persons, like all persons, can be born with a disability or can acquire a disability during their lifetime due to illness, an accident or even environmental and social factors.Intersex persons can also acquire a disability as a direct result of medically unnecessary, non-consensual interventions on their sex characteristics (also know as intersex genital mutilation - IGM).Similar to persons with disabilities, intersex persons' lived experiences are often also seen through a medical model, as opposed to a social, human-rights based model.

«Intersex Youth and Intersectionalities»

[logo: OII Europe.]‣ Intersex Youth and Intersectionalities.

What's it like to navigate being intersex while also exploring your gender identity and sexual orientation?

For all young people, opening up about their sexuality or gender identity, can be difficult and intimidating. Many young people do not live in environments where it is necessarily safe enough to come out to their family and friends.

Many intersex youth experience repeated attempts to ‘normalise’ and control their body and their sexuality throughout their lives, and therefore, coming out to family and peers as being LGBTQ, can be extra tough, compared to their endosex peers.Intersectionality (a term coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw) describes how overlapping identities and systems, such as race, class, disability, gender and age, among others, shape a person's experience in ways no single category captures.
It is a key lens through which we look at the world.

[logo: OII Europe.]“(…) I think we have to be careful about confusing visibility with acceptance. Intersex people can be more visible while still being reduced through medical definitions, diagnoses, or stories of medical violence.”

“So I think the next step is not simply to make people aware that we exist. It's to make it possible for intersex people to define themselves, to be visible on their own terms.”
— Arno Moulinier, intersex activist from Belgium during the Youth Panel of the OII Europe Online Community Event & Public Conference 2026.

OII Europe advocates for the provision of quality, person-centered and consensual healthcare rooted in a human rights approach, as well as the full, age-appropriate access to medical records.

[logo: OII Europe.]“In 1980, without the Internet, no one was talking about being intersex. The endocrinologist told them not to talk about it! So, having received no support, they ended up going very badly themselves. Fundamentally lacking in humility, these doctors deeply wound the bodies and minds of all intersex children and the damage is considerable!”
		— My Intersex Story, pg. 11.“From that moment, the first interventions and treatments were scheduled and went on for all of my childhood and adolescence. As doctors had very little experience with these kinds of cases at the time and some gender theories were emerging, they took the opportunity to turn me into a case study. They never thought it necessary to explain my situation to me and they forbade my parents to reveal it.”
		— My Intersex Story, pg. 17.Only by completely dismantling the historical culture of medical secrecy and pathologisation, and by providing psychosocial and peer support, can we ensure that intersex youth are able to fully enjoy their right to health.

‣ Intersex Youth and Access to Health Care.

How does medicalisation shape the childhood of an intersex kid and what can be done about it?

[logo: OII Europe.]It can mean a childhood shaped around time spent in hospitals and many different doctor's offices, multiple surgeries and/or procedures, invasive testing, clinical research practices and forced hormone treatments instead of around being a kid.“Missing school on the regular for weekly check-up, as i was a rare case, I had to see different doctors who wanted to see parts I did not want to show, know things I did not want to tell any grown-up man (or woman for that matter) and I saw fear and questioning in the loving, sometimes teary eyes of my parents.”
— T, from Switzerland.Intersex youth are also at risk of not being able to develop their full potential and of dropping out of school due to the effects of medicalisation and related trauma, such as post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic illness or disability.

«Intersex Youth and Access to Health Care»

[logo: OII Europe.]‣ Intersex Youth and Access to Health Care.

Intersex youth deserve quality healthcare that is tailored to their needs. The obstacles are real, and so are the solutions. What needs to change?

‣ Obstacle #1.

Most healthcare professionals lack the knowledge or skills to speak to young intersex people about their bodies, as their training is rooted in the sex/gender binary.

‣ Obstacle #2:
Trauma or negative experiences.

Many intersex people have experienced surgeries and procedures without actually needing them for their health and without their consent.
Hospitals and doctors' offices become scary places, they avoid seeking care because of past harm.None of this is fixed or written in history forever.
Actually, such surgeries started only 60-70 years ago.
The more people understand what intersex youth actually go through, what their lived experiences are, the more things can change – in doctor's offices, in families and friendships, in communities and in the world.

“With lots of self-reinforcement, I came to forget what happened and believing these were ‘just’ nightmares. Until the day I met the first intersex person. It was love at first sight. Their words were like mirrors to my soul. We became friends with high levels of complicity, care and attention.”
		 — My Intersex Story, pg. 60.

Healthcare must transform from a pathologising, medicalizing approach to one rooted in human rights, which means: ending unnecessary medical interventions, access to your own medical records and dismantling the culture of secrecy and shame.

«Protect your data»Our intimate data is valuable to Big Tech.
Period trackers, dating apps, search engines, messaging services, porn websites, sex ed chatbots and AI companions collect enormous amounts of sensitive data (both text and images), which can be hacked, leaked, sold or non-consensually shared with third parties, data brokers and law enforcement. Such data has been used to prosecute people for abortion, sexual activity and consensual sexual expression. It is used to algorithmically profile people and spam us with predatory advertising.

‣ Acknowledge their violence. Extract 1/9 from the #BreakingUpWithBigTech manifesto. #DigitalViolence
«Acknowledge their violence»The violence of Big Tech is real. Social media companies repeatedly suppress sex education, harm reduction and health promotion content and circulate disinformation about sexual and reproductive health. At the same time, they are permissive about harassment, abuse and hate speech directed towards women, BIPOC people, LGBTQIA+ communities, sex workers, people with disabilities, people living with HIV, drug users and Palestinian people — perpetuating serious online and offline harms.

🇦🇺 Vixen 🇦🇺 Scarlet Alliance: Statement on Melbourne Magistrates' Court's dismissal of violence against SWers. [Rights on paper aren't that helpful when in practice courts wipe their ***** with them…] #Australia #Vixen #ScarletAlliance #Melbourne #SexWork #Violences #LegalViolence #GenderViolence
[logos: Scarlet Alliance, Vixen.]

**On 2 October 2026, an unlawful assault charge against City of Yarra mayor Stephen Jolly was dismissed in the Melbourne Magistrates' Court.** The charge related to a protest at a 2024 election afterparty. The court agreed that Councillor Jolly struck the complainant in the face, but found that the prosecution had not proven beyond reasonable doubt that he did so intentionally.

**Vixen and Scarlet Alliance stand in solidarity with the complainant and the sex workers involved in this case. We know how much it takes for a sex worker to report violence to police and then see that report through a contested court hearing in public. This is especially true for peers in our community who are street-based, who use drugs, who are migrants, who are trans or gender diverse, or who live with disability and chronic illness; many of whom have already had harmful experiences with police and the courts.**The sex workers involved have told us they did not expect a guilty verdict, and that the outcome has confirmed their lack of confidence in the criminal-legal system, particularly for women who are already criminalised and treated as disreputable by the institutions involved.** They have also said that accountability tends to be more effective when it is led by self-organised communities, and we think this is a reminder of why peer-led support and advocacy matters for sex workers who do not feel safe going to police.

**Sex workers in Victoria fought for decriminalisation so that we could have the same access to safety and justice as everyone else.** Changing the law was an important step, but sex workers still tell us that they often don’t report violence because they don’t expect to be believed or taken seriously. This is even harder when the person who caused the harm is an elected official with a public profile and community standing, because sex workers know that our word is rarely believed, let alone weighed equally against someone in that position.**When a court accepts that a person was hit in the face and no one is held responsible,** that message travels quickly through our community, and it makes it harder for the next sex worker to come forward.

**We are calling on Victoria Police and the courts to listen to sex workers to understand the barriers we face in reporting violence,** and to make sure sex workers who do come forward are treated with dignity and taken seriously at every stage of the process.

🇪🇺 SWAN: > In the CEDAW reviews of Kazakhstan and Moldova, SWAN, EWNA, and national partners are highlighting the barriers faced by sex workers, women living with HIV, and women who use drugs. > > Our joint shadow reports document police abuse, exclusion […] [Original post on kolektiva.social]
‣ Seeking Help Should Lead to Safety.

In Kazakhstan, the report documents police harassment, forced HIV testing, and barriers to crisis shelters.

In Moldova, discriminatory shelter rules and hostile treatment can leave women without protection and force them to return to abusive situations.

Across both countries, healthcare discrimination and reproductive coercion undermine women's dignity and autonomy.‣ Decriminalisation is Essential.

We ask the CEDAW Committee to recommend to the Governments of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Moldova that they decriminalise sex work, remove HIV-specific criminal offences, and end criminalisation of drug use and possession for personal user.

Replace punitive measures with rights-based policies, voluntary support, and accessible healthcare!«Equal Rights Must Include Every Woman»

Sex workers, women living with HIV, and women who use drugs face discrimination when seeking healthcare, protection from violence, and justice.

Our joint CEDAW shadow reports on Kazakhstan and Moldova document these barriers and call for concrete action.

Border force expansions will cause more harm.

[logo: Scarlet Alliance.]The Federal Government's newly announced immigration enforcement package will directly undermine state-level health and safety protections for Asian migrant sex workers.‣ Undermining sex work decrim frameworks.

Sex work is decriminalised in NSW, NT, Victoria and Queensland. Sex workers have the same workplace rights as everyone else, but federal border enforcement creates fear that undermines those rights.

• High-pressure visa compliance checks prevent migrant workers from peer support, or reporting wage theft to authorities.
• Immigration detention exposes women, including trans women, to isolation, harassment and inadequate medical care.“Home Affairs conducted 103 raids on sex worker workplaces across Australia in the 2025-26 financial year finding just 10 visa overstayers. The harms don't add up.”

Sharing message from ESWA and SWAN, on the arrests of human rights defenders in Türkiye. #Türkiye #Solidarity #Activism #ESWA #SWANNET #Turkey #SexWork #RightToProtest #HumanRights #LGBTIQA #LGBTIQ #LGBTQ
We continue to demand the immediate release of wrongfully imprisoned sex workers and activists in Türkiye.

[logos: SWAN, ESWA.]On September 12th, LGBTQ+ activists in Türkiye, including ESWA and SWAN members, were raided in their homes and arrested for their peaceful human rights work. Three weeks later, they are still in prison.

Some of the targeted people were sex workers and sex workers' rights activists. For that, they face charges of “facilitating prostitution”.
More arrests are expected.

Sex workers in Türkiye are unable to work, hiding from state violence and hate crime.

The imprisoned are treated appallingly and endure horrible conditions in prisons.

Violence, threats and harassment are commonplace.

As the time goes by, it is essential we don't let the engagement die out.

We stand with our friends for as long as it takes.

We are in touch with organisation in Türkiye. We will soon let you know how you can help.

Until then, share this message to keep up the solidarity.

«Sex Workers' Rights are under attack across Europe and Central Asia»
		[logo: ESWA.]

Sweden ⋅ France ⋅ Iceland ⋅ TürkiyeSweden criminalised the clients of online sex work (e.g. OnlyFans) in 2025.

Just as we feared, this dangerous precedent started a new wave of attacks on sex workers' rights.

In France a bill seeking to criminalise the clients of online sex work is currently debated.

It would also lift medical confidentiality, so doctors would no longer have to protect sex workers' identity.

In Iceland, the government is moving forward with a bill introducing prison sentences for sex workers’ clients, ignoring protests from both the Icelandic sex worker community, and the scientific evidence presented by ESWA, endorsed by over 42 organisations.

In Türkiye, the human rights defenders arrested in a government crackdown face, among others, charges of “facilitating prostitution”.

Sex workers’ are continously targeted by raids and state violence. These cases are connected.

Just as other marginalised groups, sex workers’ are experiencing attacks on our rights on a scale bigger than individual country or region.

That's why ESWA calls for international solidarity.

Share this message to draw attention to the true scale of the problem.

Stay tuned to keep up to date on the developments in France, Iceland, and Türkiye.

You can learn about the cases in more detail on ESWA website.

«Big Ideas, Bold Whores. Be There!»
Connect, organise and get inspired at National Forum, 17-19 November on Kaurna Country (Adelaide).
[logo: Scarlet Alliance.]Once a year, sex workers from across Australia get together for the Scarlet Alliance National Forum.
This year we're heading to Kaurna Country (Adelaide) from 17-19 November.

National Forum is free for all sex workers, whether you are a Scarlet Alliance member or not. Come along and connect with your peers, share stories and skills, get inspired and find out the latest updates in the sex worker rights movement across unceded Australia. There are peer led sessions including workshops, panels and events.‣ Why should you attend National Forum?

National Forum is an opportunity to connect with sex workers from across the country, share new skills, swap ideas, and discuss the issues that matter to our rights, our lives and our communities. Whether you're there to learn, share, or simply connect with peers, there's a place for you. Plus, there's a Whore of the Year Party! Enough said.

‣ Is it just for sex workers?

We ensure that everyone who registers is a current of former sex worker. That means all sex workers: independent workers and escorts, brothel workers, erotic content creators and porn performers; fetish workers; strip show and peep show workers; street-based and opportunistic workers; and anyone who has traded sex for money, drugs, or favours.“Every year I return home more informed and amped to keep doing my job.”
— National Forum attendee (2024).

Head to [see post] to register for National Forum now.
