showed Sylvia Plath's "Metaphors" to my class today -- a really brilliant little poem, the only that I can think of that uses the concept of metaphor itself as a metaphor (words that are "pregnant" with meaning)

Actually felt a bit emotional seeing this — the only known group portrait of the Brontës, painted by their brother Branwell (originally depicted in the middle) and thought lost until it was found folded on top of a wardrobe in a relative’s house in Ireland in 1914

made the error of bringing John Fowles’s “The Collector” to the beach and immediately felt like such a creep for reading it in public (terrific though deeply uncomfortable novel)

there's just something about how she keeps circling around a conclusion that is oddly doubtful for a committed Puritan, almost verging on pagan, but then pulls back, in the final lines, to spiritual orthodoxy ("but of course, the sun isn't God! I repeat: the sun is not God!")

I hadn't paid much attention to Anne Bradstreet in the past, so now I'm feeling pleasantly surprised by how strange her poetry is (this stanza is from "Contemplations")

No black and white photo filter was used in the making of this image! Really striking example of a grisaille (painting in gray or neutral monochrome) in the Harvard Art museum ("Apotheosis of Louis-Adolphe Thiers," 1878)

love this bit in Marlowe's "Hero and Leander" where he delivers a stunningly homoerotic blazon, goes "I'll stop now, this is inappropriate," and then immediately resumes what he was doing

I really like this stanza in Shakespeare's Venus and Adonis because it imbues an image right out of the Loony Toons or Spongebob with some genuine pathos (she's just found his corpse, mangled by a boar)
