Souvenir pennant in Japan, my collection. ”TOBA", Mie Prefecture. This is the pennant of Toba City, which faces Ise Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It depicts the beautiful sea of the rias coastline and Ama female divers. Length 58cm (22.8in) . Circa the 1960s. #vintage

1. The Toba pennant. It features an illustration printed on red fabric. The edge of the flag is decorated with gold braided cord, and there are two red cords attached to the left side.

2. The illustration depicts the sea off Toba, a hydrofoil, and a Ama female diver. It is drawn with black lines on red fabric and colored in green and gold. The diver’s costume, the clouds, and the sea are colored with white airbrush.

Souvenir pennant in Japan, my collection. ”Nemu no Sato, NEMU", Mie Prefecture. Nemu no Sato (Nemu Resort) is a resort that was opened in Shima City in 1967 by an affiliate of the Japanese musical instrument manufacturer YAMAHA. Length 58cm (22.8in) . Circa the 1960s or 1970s. #vintage

1. The “NEMU” pennant from Nemu no Sato. It features an illustration printed on white non-woven fabric. The overall background color is lemon yellow. The edge of the flag is decorated with a braided cord woven with gold thread, and there are two yellow cords attached to the left side of the flag. Nemu no Sato continues to operate today under a different name, following a change in the operating company.

2. The illustration depicts two winged women playing music and the Nemu no Sato symbol. Set against a lemon-yellow background, the illustration features black outlines and is colored in shades of blue, green, deep pink, and purple.

3. Close-up of the illustration. The two women, depicted in a stained-glass-style design, have wings—perhaps they are angels or fairies. While flying through the sky, they are blowing trumpets and playing violins toward the symbol depicted in the center of the flag. In the center of the flag is the circular “Nemu no Sato” symbol. Souvenir pennant in Japan. ”Balihai Center", Miyagi Prefecture. The Balihai Center was a hot spring resort located on the shores of Lake Kamafusa, about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) west of Sendai. It opened in 1973 but closed in the late 1990s. Length 69cm (27.1in) . Circa the 1970s. #vintage

Souvenir pennant in Japan, my collection. ”Ofuna Kannon Buddha", Kanagawa Prefecture. The Ofuna Kannon is a 25-meter (82-feet) tall statue of the Byakue Kannon Buddha, whose construction began in the 1920s and was completed in 1960. Length 60.5cm (23.8in) . Circa the 1960s. #vintage

1. A Ofuna Kannon Buddha pennant. It features an illustration printed on white fabric, with two red ribbons attached to the left side of the flag. The Ofuna Kannon is now part of Ofuna Kannon-ji Temple, a temple dedicated to memorializing the dead and praying for peace.

▲お土産 #ペナント「大船観音」(おおふなかんのん、神奈川県) 鎌倉市。大船の街とJR大船駅を見渡す高台にある。1929年に起工、計画の変遷を経て1960年に完成。1981年に慰霊と平和を祈念する現: 大船観音寺になった。これは柔和な表情の白衣観音 (びゃくえかんのん) を描く。比較的に珍しい作品。全長60.5cm。 [1960年代頃/ #昭和レトロ ]

Souvenir pennant in Japan, my collection. ”Okuzure Coast, Yaizu Port", Shizuoka Prefecture. This is a pennant featuring the Okuzure Coast and Yaizu Port. The illustration is based on KATSUSHIKA Hokusai’s ukiyo-e print “Koshu Kajikazawa.” Length 57.5cm (22.6in) . 1976. #vintage

1. The pennant for Okuzure Coast and Yaizu Port. It features an illustration printed on light blue fabric and is trimmed with yellow fringe.

2. The illustration is a reproduction of a portion of KATSUSHIKA Hokusai’s ukiyo-e print “Koshu Kajikazawa” from the "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" series. It is rendered in black lines and colored in blue, green, red, and yellow.

3. Close-up of the illustration. It is a reference to Hokusai’s “Koshu Kajikazawa.” However, the cliff depicted on the left does not appear in “Koshu Kajikazawa” or in the "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji"; it was added later. The scene depicts a fisherman on a rock casting a net into the rough waves, with Mount Fuji visible in the distance as a backdrop. Since Yaizu Port is known for its thriving fishing industry, the fishing motif was likely chosen for this reason.

4. The title is in Japanese. Written in calligraphic-style kanji, it reads “Okuzure Coast, Yaizu Port” (red). A view of the old port is depicted on the right side of the flag. 3. イラストの拡大。北斎の甲州鰍沢の引用。ただし、左の断崖は”甲州鰍沢”や富嶽三十六景にはなく、付加されたもの。遠くに見える富士山を背景に、岩の上の漁師が富士川の荒波に向かって網を投げている図である。それは富士山が見えること、海か川に向かって漁師が網を投げている様子から、険しい断崖の続く難所で知られる大崩海岸のイメージを鰍沢に重ねる意図だろう。ちなみに焼津港は漁港として知られ、そうした背景に沿うものでもある。

4. タイトルは和文。筆文字風の漢字で ”大崩海岸焼津港” (赤) 。旗の右側、江戸時代頃の港の景色は引用元不詳。なお、旗の右端に記念日付欄 (昭和年月日, 黒) 。昭和51年11月12日の記入あり。

Souvenir pennant in Japan, my collection. ”Yugashima", Shizuoka Prefecture. Yugashima is a hot spring resort nestled in the mountains near Mount Amagi in the central part of the Izu Peninsula. This painting depicts Joren Falls. Length 58.5cm (23.0in) . Circa the 1970s. #vintage

1. The Yugashima pennant. It features an illustration printed on yellow fabric, with two light blue ribbons attached to the left side of the flag.

2. The illustration depicts the majestic scenery of Joren Falls. Joren Falls is said to be 25 meters (82 feet) high and 7 meters (22.9 feet) wide.

3. A close-up of the illustration. Joren Falls cascades down a large rock face surrounded by forest. The figure in the foreground provides a good sense of the waterfall’s scale. You can also see volcanic geological features such as the basalt and columnar jointing on the rock face.

4. The title is in Japanese. The kanji for “Izu” and “Yugashima” (in red) are written in a brush-style, semi-cursive script. ▲お土産 #ペナント「UNITED NATIONS, N.Y.」(USA) ニューヨーク市の国際連合本部(1952年竣工)。国連の多言語ツアーガイドは1952年に開始され、2022年までに世界各国から4200万人が参加したという (国連広報センター)。これらのペナントは国連旗をモチーフとし、その青は戦争に反対する色を象徴している。おそらく多言語ツアーガイドの参加者向けのお土産品。全長64cm。 [1970〜80年代頃]

2. 国際連合のペナント (上) 。白い布に水色でイラストとタイトルをプリント。旗の左に紐をかたどった白い装飾付き (ダイカットによる成形) 。イラストは国連旗のモチーフが水色の地に白抜きで描かれている。タイトルは英文、ゴシック体の大文字で ”UNITED NATIONS, N.Y.” (白い地に水色の文字) 。

3. 国際連合のペナント (下) 。水色の布に白抜きで国際旗のモチーフとタイトルが描かれている。旗の左に濃紺の紐2本付き(縫い付け)。タイトルは英文、ゴシック体の大文字で ”UNITED NATIONS, N.Y.” (水色の地に白の文字) 。

Souvenir pennant in Japan, my collection. ”Kenrokuen Garden", Ishikawa Prefecture. Kenroku-en Garden was established in 1676 by Maeda Tsunanori, the fifth lord of the Kaga Domain (located in the area of present-day Ishikawa Prefecture). Length 50cm (19.6in) . Circa the 1960s or 1970s. #vintage

1. A Kenroku-en Garden pennant. It features an illustration printed on black fabric, and the edges of the flag are decorated with silver braided cord. Two gold synthetic resin cords are attached to the left side of the flag.

2. The illustration depicts the Kotaji Lantern and Kasumigaike Pond in Kenroku-en Garden, as well as Kanazawa Castle. Mount Hakusan and other landmarks are visible in the background. These elements are printed on a black background using white outlines and white, green, brown, and red ink, and are airbrushed in white, green, and blue.

3. Close-up of the illustration. Kasumigaike Pond and the “Kotaji Lantern” in Kenroku-en Garden. Several swans are visible on the pond. Beyond the garden’s plantings, the Ishikawamon Gate of Kanazawa Castle is depicted. In the background, Mount Daimon—also known as “Kaga Fuji”—is visible alongside Mount Hakusan. These elements are beautifully rendered using a combination of printing and airbrushing.

4. The title is in Japanese. It reads “Kenroku-en” (in red) in calligraphic-style kanji characters.

▲お土産 #ペナント「兼六園」(けんろくえん、石川県) 金沢市。加賀藩主前田氏の大名庭園。1676年、5代藩主前田綱紀公が開苑、歴代藩主が整備した。国: 特別名勝(1985年)。これは兼六園の庭園と”ことじ灯籠”、金沢城。奥は加賀富士(大門山)と白山だろうか。全長50cm。 [1960〜70年代/ #昭和レトロ ]

1. 兼六園のペナント。黒い布にイラストをプリント。旗の周縁に銀色の編み紐の装飾。旗の左に金色の合成樹脂製の紐2本付き。

2. イラストは兼六園のことじ灯籠と霞ヶ池。金沢城。奥に白山 (はくさん) 。黒地に白い描線、白, 緑, 茶, 赤でプリント。白, 緑, 青のピース加工 (エアブラシ) で彩色。

3. イラストの拡大。兼六園の霞ヶ池と”ことじ灯籠”。池には数羽の白鳥の姿がある。庭園の植栽の先に金沢城の石川門。奥に加賀富士の別名のある大門山、並んで白山。右寄りに丘と洋式の建物が見えている。プリントとピース加工で美しく描かれている。

Souvenir pennant in Japan, my collection. ”Kanazawa Castle", Ishikawa Prefecture. Kanazawa Castle was built in the 1580s. This pennant features the Ishikawa-mon Gate, Hime Daruma dolls, Kaga dolls, and Kaga Lion Dance Mask. Length 63cm (24.8in) . Circa the 1970s or 1980s. #vintage

1. A Kanazawa Castle pennant. An illustration is printed on blue-gray fabric. The pennant features die-cut shapes: a rounded protrusion on the left side and a rounded indentation on the right. A yellow cord runs along the rounded protrusion on the left side of the pennant; this cord is tied at the left edge and extends decoratively.

2. On the left side of the pennant, the main illustration depicts the Ishikawamon Gate of Kanazawa Castle.

3. Left side of the flag. The Ishikawamon Gate is depicted within a black circular frame. The Ishikawamon Gate is a magnificent example of castle architecture, featuring stone walls and watchtowers (yagura). The caption within the circular frame is written in both Japanese and English: “KANAZAWAJŌ, ISHIKAWAMON, ISHIKAWAKEN, 1 million koku (of rice)” (white text on a black background).

4. Right side of the flag. A child with a charming expression is depicted holding a “hime-daruma” doll and a lion’s head. The title is in Japanese: “Kanazawa Castle” (in red kanji). On the far right, a Kaga Lion Dance Mask and a lion’s head clutching a tachi sword are depicted.

▲お土産 #ペナント「金沢城」(石川県) 金沢市。国:史跡の金沢城跡。1580年代に築城され、後に前田氏の居城となった。百万石まつりは特に有名。これは代表的景観の石川門 (国:重要文化財) 。民芸品の姫だるま、加賀人形と加賀獅子が可愛らしい。全長63cm。 [1970〜80年代/ #昭和レトロ ]

1. 金沢城のペナント。青灰色の布にイラストをプリント。旗は左側に丸い膨らみ、右側に丸い凹みのダイカット加工。丸い膨らみに沿って黄色い紐の装飾。黄色い紐は旗の左端で結ばれ、外側へ装飾的に伸ばされている。

3. 旗の左側。黒い丸い枠の中に石川門が描かれている。石川門は石垣と櫓(やぐら)や続櫓などによる見事な城郭建築である。丸い枠のキャプションは和英併記で ”KANAZAWAJŌ, ISHIKAWAMON, ISHIKAWAKEN, 100万石” (黒地に白抜き) 。

4. 旗の右側。可愛らしい表情の姫だるまと獅子頭を手にする童子。タイトルは和文。手書き文字風にアレンジされた漢字で”金沢城” (赤) 。右端に加賀獅子、太刀を咥えた獅子頭が描かれている。
