The first image was the moment I realized that the planetary shipyard in the middle of an ocean was not ideal for larger & ring ships. 😂 This is why I'm working on the space dock. It also makes a little bit more sense in terms of my "brand" name. Progress on the space dock is slow but steady. :)

Some test images, from February 2014, of a Spirit class variant. I was alpha testing Moskito renderer by Cebas. These rendered under a minute. (in 2014, on a single mid range GPU.) As I came from "buckets" this was very impressive to me. :)

This month the Merian class will be 15 years old. I'm very confused as I started on it in 2009, but I assume that I then gave priority to Vesta and XCV, to finish the Merian in January 2011. Also one of the latest renders of it, (Strickland variant) from 2024.

Some concept art from Picard (not by me) showing a Vesta class starship on an MSD. I personally would have picked a very different bridge layout, but within the show this would have been a "quick" set redress. That Vesta, (USS Hikaru Sulu) + Captain Harry Kim part was dropped from the story.

Tiny departure schedule for the dock. (Basically the daily commuting runabout (Pleiades) and some weekly supply/cargo/material shipments by Starfleet.) Still all work in progress but slowly creeping towards a completed dock.

In a way yes! The Curie (from the books) in my mind always had this config. The large Sato side pods would be different/smaller on the Curie. The version on the schematic was a proper conversion I did in 2022 for Picard. (unused) In 2012 I did this mock up: (1/2)

The livery is very Section 31. :) This concept is dated Friday 31st of October 2008. A week or so before we settled on Probert's curved pylons. I did try out a few different configs. I personally liked this, but it would make the ship a bit shorter than was desired.

A Vesta class flyby test animation made a few years ago, during the conversion for Picard. I'm not an animator, I primarily do design and modeling and then I run out of will power. 😀 This exact mesh/model is 16 years old. (Finished January 2009.)

Fast mass production mainly, required after the events in Destiny. It has a central spine so that different pylon or module configurations can be used independent from the hull sections. My only problem with the Miranda is how the pylon "sticks" into the hull. This was my solution to that.

Top and Bottom hull sections start out similar in construction, but are filled in differently. Creating big chunks of the ship in similar fashion probably would help in production speed.

The Merian has no thrusters. It uses a a low level field manipulation device in the central section to very smoothly and precisely yaw, pitch and roll. It is slower than traditional RCS systems though, but it does speed up production. (There is a theme there lol)

I did this one for Probert, he wanted to see a sort of "Stargazer" setup.

Quite early in the design process it had a more "Delta" roll bar, but I felt it was under-defined and would not allow the versatility required.

I like it, they look good on there. I did explore a similar direction in 2009. Design wise it sits much better. One of the first boxed out 3D versions was also having a more angulare/Excelsior like pylon too. Eventually we went with a sweep after Probert did various pylon sketches.

In other non starship news: I finished building my new bicycle. Electronic gearbox but no motor, so I still have to do all the cycling, but that is how I like it. 😀 I designed a small feedtray so that I can snack while I cycle, making it a zero sum game. 🙂🍫 🍪

Why does the workbee take that long? Well here is an isolinear fusebox cover in the seat. (It is for the optional control sticks.) I decided to do the upholstery in felt. I wanted to go full Neelix with the fabrics, but I'm a coward, grey-ish it is. :)

About once a year I do some architectural visualization. With the asset libraries of today, this always feels like a sort of "lighter" more gamified work than having to design/model a starship or a yacht. It is quite fun to do.

I did this one from scratch in a month or two.

These are medium visuals in my opinion, they give a good idea of the feel, but if you look too close, it is obvious that some things could have been done better. But I have accepted that these don't have to be perfect for the goal. If good would take 2 weeks, perfect would take 2 months, that is why it is the enemy of progress. :D
