In 2017, Criselda Vasquez painted this portrait of her parents and titled it "The New American Gothic." Last month, her father, the man in this portrait, was abducted by ICE after being in the US for 30+ years. The family is now struggling with bills. A GoFundMe has been started: gofund.me/456d8a193

AI is expanding fast — and so are the risks to human rights. To truly safeguard people from the worst risks of AI development, we need strong, actionable data protection rights. Here’s what you need to know ⬇️
Title: The relationship between AI and data protection
Subheading: AI is expanding fast — and so are the risks to human rights. Here’s what you need to know ▶️
Everybody wants to talk about machine learning 👀

Machine learning is an approach where systems are trained on huge amounts of data to recognise patterns without explicit instructions. Today’s AI boom comes from advances in large language models (LLMs) – the tech behind ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek or Claude – trained on massive datasets that allow them not only to recognise patterns, but also generate content.

Because machine learning relies on collecting enormous amounts of data, it is vital that robust data protection provisions are established to protect people’s rights.
How is AI putting people’s rights at risk?
Governments worldwide are increasingly deploying AI-backed surveillance – like predictive policing and facial recognition technologies– in the name of national security. Many are also adopting automated decision making systems for the provision of social welfare. These put people at various levels of risk.Tech companies' AI use raises similar data protection concerns, especially for vulnerable communities
The dating app Bumble, for instance, faces a complaint in Austria due to their sharing of users’ chat history with OpenAI, in order to facilitate their new ‘AI icebreakers’ feature. EFF has raised the alarm on other dating apps like Grindr with their planned AI wingman launch.

Access Now: a digital rights love story
A tale about people, power, and keeping the internet open for all
Access Now logo. A book, a lock and a hands lensWho we are

Access Now is an international nonprofit defending and extending the digital rights of people and communities at risk worldwide.

We were founded in 2009 during the Iranian elections, when people came together online and in the streets to rally against human rights abuses.

What began as an emergency response team helping activists get back online after the regime cut them off has grown into a global movement defending digital rights everywhere. What we stand for

From battling internet shutdowns to opposing harmful spyware, we work at the intersection of human rights and technology.

We fight censorship and surveillance, and advocate for free expression, privacy, transparency, and safe, open digital spaces.

Our mission is simple: to ensure technology strengthens human rights and safeguards democracy, instead of dismantling it.From grassroots to global

Our work is rooted in communities around the world and carried to the global stage.

We partner with local activists and movements to bring a human rights agenda to the use, development, and governance of digital technologies, and to intervene where technologies adversely impact human rights.

Each region drives its priorities and feeds into a global effort to protect and extend digital rights.

Digital rights are everyone’s business — including yours. From surveillance to shutdowns, our human rights online are under attack every day. Learn more on our website: www.accessnow.org
Digital rights are everyone’s business — including yours!
From mass surveillance that decimates our privacy to internet shutdowns that silence us, our human rights online are constantly under threat.
This is why safeguarding digital rights isn’t optional — it’s essential for justice, democracy, and dignity in the digital age. First… what are digital rights?
Digital rights are the same human rights we all have — in digital spaces.
They protect how we can express ourselves, access information, and safeguard our privacy in the digital age.
They include:
Freedom of expression
Privacy and data protection
Protest and online organizing
If you use the internet and participate in our increasingly digital world, these rights are YOUR business. Almost every aspect of our lives now depends on digital technology. Without digital rights, our basic freedoms collapse.
When governments shut down the internet, communities lose their voice.
When companies harvest our data, our privacy vanishes.
When algorithms decide what we see, democracy is distorted.

Protecting digital rights means defending our ability to speak, connect, and participate freely in our societies.
