I feel like we are at the "Do Not Build The Onion Nexus" stage of things.

End-to-end (RCS, iMessage): Only sender and receiver can decrypt and read the messages (most secure) SMS/MMS, calls, other: Encrypted by the cell tower, meaning only you, the recipient, but also the cell provider can read the messages.

Last thing: SMS and MMS are technically encrypted, but not end to end encrypted. Confusing, I know.

Oh and to add: SMS is the standard used to send text only messages MMS was invoked by devices to send compressed versions of multimedia (images, video, audio, etc.) over cellular networks via mobile data. It's a rabbithole, but they are used together. SMS for text, MMS for everything else.

If you need both encryption and reliability, see if your friends use something like Signal. That's entirely internet based, but it's reliable and secure.

I understand not having encryption might be a concern. Though please know that you didn't have it before May 2026 anyways, since that was when Apple started supporting it. So you'll be just as secure as you were then. Not a great justification for it, but not receiving messages is also an issue.

What does this all mean? By turning off RCS, you will fall back to messaging your Android device friends using SMS. This might work more consistently for you, but you will lose some quality of life features. You will also lose end to end encryption.

Within the past 6 months, Apple has been rolling out RCS support to consumer devices (and did so earlier for commercial iirc). However, from my experience their support for the standard has been poor and inconsistent. You can likely attest to this.

Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Therefore, devices commonly "fall back" to SMS or MMS if the newer standards of RCS or iMessage fails (though, this behavior can be disabled if security is a concern.)

Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
As you noted, SMS lacks end to end encryption. As such, I agree that if RCS works (or iMessage) you should use that. However one benefit of SMS is that it works entirely over cellular networks and does not require the Internet (unlike RCS and iMessage, which do).

Within the past 10 years, Android has been adopting this standard for use between devices. Previously, Android to Android, as well as Apple to Android would use the SMS/MMS standards, which are very old standards and lack a lot of features.
120
Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
RCS was developed by other companies to replicate these functions but it is an "open standard" so it can be used by all sorts of different devices, including Android.

Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
No worries. So Apple has their own standard called iMessage they've been using for forever. It's what allows typing indicators, end-to-end encryption, etc. however, it only works for Apple to Apple communication.

Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Not sure if you just saw my reply: It being on might be the issue lol

Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I have it with my sister and so I have to keep telling her to turn her data/wifi on before they can go through. Not sure if turning off data or wifi or something about that is causing this issue for you?
010
Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I suspect it's RCS related since you mentioned these issues started occurring in the last 6 months. This is roughly when Apple started supporting the standard on consumer devices, and messages not going through is a Hallmark issue.
120
Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Besides messaging on a different platform, one workaround might be to disable RCS support on your phone. Not that Apple does a good job with it anyways. You'll lose some features; it'll fall back to SMS/MMS which doesn't require cellular or wifi connections so it's less buggy from my experience.

Is this when messaging Android phone users? Apple famously does not play nicely when messaging Android. There are lots of examples of this happening. The excuse is "security" and "non-feature parity" but it's mostly because Apple wants to stigmatize messaging Android users.

Deskilling is another dimension of this. I wrote these thoughts after listening to the latest episode from @404media.co's podcast:

Maybe instead of thinking "I shouldn't annoy my friend with this idea or question," think "Why haven't I annoyed my friend with this." It's hard work, but it's important to build relationships with people in your life so you can have these conversations.

An especially insidious effect of personal chatbots is that as more and more people use and rely on it for dialogue, they become less available to each other, causing them to rely on it further.

From this book: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underst... If you haven't read it yet, it's a classic for all sorts of creatives, especially those who do visual or textual narratives. However, I found the overlap with modern UI/UX design language fascinating. Might post more thoughts later.

If you absolutely must provide constructive criticism, try to choose those things which are: * Not obvious to the recipient * Easy(ish) to correct/change * Specific * Solicited!!! But like, always remember that compliments are constructive feedback too.

Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
If not delivered well or to the right kind person, "constructive" criticism can actually be hugely discouraging and destructive, regardless of intent!

Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
The solution to most perceived deficiencies in any discipline is just time and practice. Often, compliments create enthusiasm, which is more likely to lead to time and practice than "constructive" criticism.

Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
While "constructive" criticism *is* valuable, compliments are often even more constructive. Some people feel discouraged when they hear critical feedback. When they hear a compliment, they feel encouraged.

Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Seems obvious, but genuinely great words of wisdom. I often find myself hesitating to give well earned compliments simply because I perceive something that could be improved, and it feels inauthentic to give unqualified compliments. However, that's not a helpful mindset.

We have two conflicting internet experiences: Valuing and learning about the individuality of distinct spaces, and those that believe that internet culture is largely universal. At its worst, algospeak can be a form of digital colonization by larger platforms over smaller digital communities.
010
Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
To me, this speaks to the homogenization and de-localization of internet culture. People's experience of the internet is unbounded, and content from each platform is uncritically imported to the rest. Once diverse and distinct spaces begin to mirror each other, and this includes the language.

It's a hard needle to thread, but the more people and organizations working on this problem, the more optimistic I am that we can make progress. Thank you for reading my note and for your advocacy and work towards a more human and private internet :)

Overall, though, we need to better support non-Chromium alternatives through use or through patronage. I appreciate the work done by your team, though seeing friends I know shift from using Firefox to alternatives like Brave or Vivaldi is a bittersweet feeling.

Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
However, the leading alternatives; * Firefox - inexorably linked to Google's commercialization * Safari/Webkit - locked to Apple Makes it hard as an individual to wholeheartedly support these alternatives. There is a complex interplay of foundations, institutes, and companies which is a factor.

Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
Chromium dominance/monoculture leads to dominance in setting and propagating web standards, user expectations (soft power), browser modularity (or lack thereof), not to mention systemic security and privacy risks. As such, collectively, we should want to avoid this outcome.
140
Nathan Hart @yallcaps.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
My concern with privacy focused browsers which are based on Chromium is it attracts already scarce "non-Chrome" users who would otherwise use a non-Chromium browser like Firefox, Safari, etc. Ironically, this is leading to the decline in non-Chromium browser market share overall.

This was an interesting read. While hard to unlink from each other, this guide emphasized the most ethical browser to use as an individual. I'm also interested in the most ethical browser to use collectively. It's our collective responsibility to support better web standards and avoid monocultures
