Body in functional mayhem for the 2nd night, asked spouse if it’s snowing yet. He said no and I was perplexed, figured it was temp change or barometric shit, and then I got these alerts together (top is heart rate fuckery tracked via Visible app). There it is. My body always knows. #POTS #disability

Two phone alerts within 3 minutes of each other. The first says take it easy: “you’ve spent 2 minutes in your exertion zone. Take some time to rest if you can.” The second says, “snow soon: expected to start at your location at 11:34 PM.“

Rough medical appt this morning, came home to find our elderly hedgehog Iroh died. He was slowing down a lot this morning and I’d planned to come home and have some time with him out on the deck, but he was already gone. This day can go fling itself off a high cliff. Rest gently, little friend.

Successful Cathflo treatment today after my Hickman line started to act up last week. My double prong outlet is back in tip top shape just in time for monthly labs. Side effect: I can now see through walls and lift cars. Finally, my superhero arc!

Today is five years since my kid’s first day of suddenly virtual kindergarten due to the pandemic. They’ve never had one full school year that has been anything remotely normal. They are the only human being still wearing a mask in their school building this year and they don’t let a single person say a single sideways fucking word about it to them.

This month is also two years since my first positive Covid test, when chronic health issues suddenly bloomed into life-changing disabilities with the help of a virus I had worked so damn hard to avoid (and still do) because I knew in every corner of my gut that I would not be a lucky asymptomatic patient, and I also didn’t want wonder who I might disable or hospitalize by not protecting the world on my end.

I wrote this last year while grappling with a new baseline that included house modifications, an adapted van, and a power wheelchair. I’ve had 4 surgeries since I wrote it. I am still a glass window, one that can’t drive and sing at the same time without losing vision, one that gets stares in public when on wheels but can vanish from someone’s line of sight with one magic word: “mask.” Eyes slide right off me, ears stop registering sound.

Five years ago, my family stepped into a reality and we have had the courage to stay present in it, meet it and bear it year after year, and so many naked faced people have opted to put heads in the sand and then express surprise at where we are right now in the world, having conditioned the collective to normalize needless mass death.

This morning I compared it to being unable to be oblivious while surrounded by unwashed ostrich asses in the air. I’m going to hold onto that descriptive, and think of each naked face wielded in public as a bare unwashed ass. It’ll keep me glad to be wearing a mask for yet another reason.

If you’re still in this reality with me, I love you and I’m sorry it’s hard. If you’re one of the unwashed asses, I hope your dreams are filled with sand-penetrating cries and the faces of people you’ve discarded or infected along the way.
