But changing the system requires systemic work. Hell is other people because other people are *great* but it's *so hard* to get them to do things your way. That takes time and understanding and togetherness and arguing and forgiving.

In other words, voting only matters if it's the final stage of a sustained campaign to build and mobilize popular power. Without that, voting will get you precious little.

The reduction of politics to voting is part of the 50 year neoliberal project whose foremost goal is to make you think of yourself as an atomized individual and not as a member of a polity.

whenever people whine about giving up HP because they like their kid wizards, direct them right here. Diane Duane’s Young Wizard books started out way before JKR’s, and they have really excellent worldbuilding and plot. I ate them all up as a kid and I’m excited to reread as an adult for hella cheap

The quality of the submissions remains very, very high. Almost everything I rejected today is a piece that really should be published somewhere, but I'm starting to see the shape of the book and I'm getting a sense of what will and won't fit. We need more novelette / novella publishers. Period.

I'm just here to say today that querying is hard. There's no way around it if you're unagented. It's hard on the soul and on one's patience. Just keep at it. If you decide to go with self-publishing, godspeed. That, too, is difficult. Persistence and discipline are the marrow of luck.

It bugs me that we're normalising the idea that there's something wrong with long documents, or that they're not "worth" our time. There is huge value in careful thought, in detail and nuance, in exploration, and in the experiential journey that goes alongside that.

This made me think of @bethcato.bsky.social . 😁
Image of a possum wearing a purple robe and a silver crown, seated at a table. On the table is a large wedge of Swiss-like cheese, a candle taper in a candle-holder, and an adorably crocheted Cthulhu doll wearing a matching crown and sitting on a throne. In the background is sketched elements of a cathedral, including a stained glass window and columns supporting a rib vaulted ceiling. A small spider dangles from above near the possum's head. The possum has just banged a gavel with a CRACK! and announced, "I consulted with the supreme council of myself. We voted unanimously to stay home and eat cheese. The veto is absolute."

Friday morning, I was gardening when I checked my phone. A request had gone out for help. For 25+ hours, ICE had been laying siege to a quiet neighborhood in Frederick, MD. Community members were afraid, some didn’t want to leave their homes. ICE vehicles seemed to be lurking on every corner.
ICE vehicle - black Nissan Maxima with plate cover - posted up in a spot that also serves as an elementary school bus stop. Another ICE vehicle, black Dodge Durango, lurking around the community. Two more ICE vehicles - black Dodge Durango and a white SUV, unclear on make, model - on a quiet residential street, being quietly creepy. Note that the white SUV has its plate covered. Yet another ICE vehicle. Black Nissan Pathfinder. They were all over the neighborhood.
