Added to my holding in Knights Group, a UK-listed consolidator of regional law firms. Growing organically, and at an incredibly cheap valuation. KGH

Me, an idiot: "This stock looks really good value here, I'll just sit back and watch it rally 25% in 2 months."

I keep looking at former "no-brainer" compounder stocks and seeing that they're down ~50%. Painful.

Good piece of analysis here (based on simulated portfolios using actual share price data) showing how taking profits on winning positions is a toxic strategy.

And looks like an ideal Berkshire business. Yeah, sure, they're in a downturn. But they been consistently earning a >15% ROIC, and >30% when times are good. $POOL $BRK

Interesting to see in the Berkshire 13-F that they've sold out of Pool Corp, just as sales growth is inflecting positively. They bought in during mid-2024, when the share price was much higher, and the sales growth severely negative. What was their rationale back then? $BRK $POOL

My Instagram feed is suddenly full of adverts like this for property in the Gulf. Good luck selling those! Note: Not sure how this is being targeted - I've never searched or browsed for this.

Pattern in the Scottish election is one of Reform helping the SNP to stay in power by splitting the unionist or Conservative vote in a way that denies the nearest challenger a chance of winning.

It's a cool and still spring day, so there is little wind or solar for the UK, and so we're relying on gas and imports for our electricity generation. Disastrous energy security situation to be in.

These are actually sensible policies and most people will be quite surprised that we don't do these things already.

Pouring one out tonight for Nick Train and Terry Smith, who rode consumer staples all the way down, before rotating into data services stocks, which are now getting smashed on the assumed threat from AI.

Latest reading: "The Land Trap" by @birdyword.bsky.social, which looks at how land functions in the economy, and covers a series of major bubbles and how government policies have shaped them. A very readable mix of economic theory and history.

Lots of attention this week on the soggy performance of Nick Train and Terry Smith, but let's not ignore Baillie Gifford's Scottish Mortgage, which seems to have largely missed-out on the AI boom of the last few years.

From the Mirror today on the lifting of the 2-child benefit cap. This woman gets her net income topped-up to £6,412/month. In Scotland, you need to earn ~£130,000 per year to have this net monthly income.

I think we can now safely say that this credit cycle peaked about 1 year ago. Single B spreads failed to even re-test the lows this summer, and have since been leaking wider.

Scandinavian countries rank high on GDP per capita, on the Human Development Index, and low on inequality. They're exactly the countries we should be trying to emulate for a better and more successful society.

It's really hard for politicians not to make such changes when an issue polls like this. Zak Polanski on Newsnight last night was trying to argue that immigration isn't a problem. I don't think that position washes with the public.

Superb work from @tomcalver.bsky.social and @jburnmurdoch.ft.com showing how the UK's upper-middle classes have born the brunt of our 20yr long productivity stagnation, whereas lower earners have been insulated from this via ongoing minimum wage hikes, compressing earnings across the spectrum.

Latest reading: "Gresham's Law" by John Guy. A biography of Sir Thomas Gresham, who acted as banker to Edward V, Mary, and Elizabeth I. Quite a story. He kept screwing-up, and screwing-over counterparties and even his own family members. Died with an estate in bankruptcy.

Perfect example of this is Buffett acolyte Monish Pabrai, who has underperformed the S&P 500 by 3.2% per year over 21 years, and with substantially higher volatility and drawdowns.

You should have more stocks in your portfolio as it is more likely to generate higher returns. Diversification isn’t just about reducing idiosyncratic risk, it's also about giving yourself more chance of holding the big winners.

Macfarlane shares down 18.5% on a profit warning linked to a fatal accident at one of their manufacturing plants. (I own it).
