The fact that three dudes (rock) that worked at Volvo in Gothenburg decided to race the Paris-Dakar in 1983 in an almost stock C303 "Valp" and won the under 10 tonnes class.

This replica of an old PV544 rally car that two brothers bought used and raced the East African Safari Rally with was incredibly gorgeous.

In April 1965, Joginder and Jaswant Singh won the Safari Rally the toughest rally in the world in a Volvo PV 544 that had already been raced for two seasons and crashed the year before. They bought the car on instalment purchase and gradually adapted it to cope with Kenya's rough conditions.

No one thought the Singh brothers stood a chance Volvo's performance in the previous year's Safari Rally had been a disappointment. But they drew starting number one, giving them clear visibility on the dusty roads in the beginning. The second stage was wet and muddy, and the brothers had their own method: while Joginder kept the throttle steady and steered through the deep ruts, Jaswant stood on the rear bumper, rocking the car with his body weight to help the drive wheels grip - a human traction system. They won by a record margin -one hour and 40 minutes.

This is a replica of the original 1965 car, now fully restored. It is still owned by the Singh family but is part of the World of Volvo collection."

Ewy Rosqvist was born outside Ystad. She was the only daughter in a farming family with five children and eventually became a veterinary assistant after agricultural school.

A profession that involved driving 15-20 km a day on the gravel roads of Skåne. Ewy clocked her business trips in the countryside and constantly reduced the times between the different farms. Ewy Rosqvist first started rallying together with her husband Yngve Rosqvist and started her own career in the Volvo PV 544, in 1959 she won the European Championship title in the women's class. Her driving was fast, smart and safe. In 1960, Ewy was contracted as a factory driver for Volvo and also won the European Rally Championship title in 1961."

Hell yeah I loved this 400$ shitbox mk3 Golf CL. I started wrenching more and started taking better care of my shit (because I had to being broke as fuck and also suicidally depressed). I eventually gave it away to a friend who was stuck in her house without any way to get around, there's basically no public transport in the mountains. She needed it more than me and I hope it tithed her over that particularly rough patch in both our lives <3

Oh my sweet sweet 500$ -97 Audi A3 1.8t manual, I had such a great time with you hooning around the backroads listening to that silly BOV. Thank you for your service and part being part of my life until you unexpectedly and mysteriously died. RIP in pieces Le Petit Myrtille 💙

A silvermetallic true grandma spec Volvo V50 1.8f 🤍. You were my way back into That Wagon Life, so practical, cheap (hey you could run on either regular gas or e85!) and comfortable. I did the only natural thing and traded you in for a slightly never V50!

The final evolution: 2012 Volvo V50 D2 classic 6 speed manual. The people's champ, the long haul champion and my trusted friend I'll drive until the end of time hopefully. It's comfortable, practical, fun to drive, cheap on gas, tax and my wallet so far. Runs freaking below 0.5L/100km's most fill ups and it can unofficially run HVO100 for when the dino-diesel dries up and surpasses 30sek/L aka 14.7$ per gallon. I love you dearly 💙

Inspired by @victoriascott.bsky.social:s walk through memory lane through her garage I did the same. Here's my history, though not nearly as cool as Vicky's...

My first car, a Toyota Corolla E110 hatchback from around -00, I got handed down from my paternal grandfather. I drove that thing everywhere and didn't treat it that well or serviced it regularly. But it took it in strides like a true Toyota and I traded it in for WAY over what it was actually worth at the time for me to buy first "own" car: a Skoda Roomster!

A hipster filter:d Skoda Roomster. Talk about me being a closeted quirked up queer person way longer than I allowed myself to realize. A really really funky boxy car, kinda the euro Honda Element in a way. Über practical with over 2.5 cubic meters of storage with the rear seats lifted out (which you could do individually).

Next in line: my denim blue Skoda Yeti 4x4 tdi, the natural evolution of the Roomster that I unfortunately totaled by boucing into a wire guard rails on a highway bouncing from left to right to left again. I didn't hit anyone, hurt myself and thanked my lucky stars. This one, the Yeti, died from electrical gremlins caused some backyard mechanic trying to do electrical repairs on it and then letting moisture into the main wire loom. Sending all sensors to hell, making it short out intermittently and the car screaming at me that EVERYTHING WAS WRONG ALL THE TIME: price to "fix" $8000....

A way too expensive car for me: mk7 Golf Sportscombi 4motion tdi manual. This was lunacy and cost me so much money. Nail in the coffin was getting hit-n-runned by some asshole that broke the incredibly complex driverside headlight. Parts cost (NO LABOUR) just to get it roadworthy and through yearly inspection: +2000$, I sold it as was and then moved on to....
