I didn't have an Amiga, but I was enraptured by a crude version of this animation on my Atari ST. "Recovering Eric Graham's 1987 Juggler raytracer source code" Chris Hanson
Frame from a classic Amiga animation called "The Juggler". A figure, resembling a stick figure, stands on an infinite green and yellow chessboard under a blue sky. The figure is constructed from variously colored spheres for arms, legs, torso, head, and eyes. It juggles three glass spheres. The elements reflect and refract light and receive shadows, with a degree of realism and color depth uncommon when the animation was created.

A weird sense memory triggered this image in my mind. This is the first thing I drew in a drawing program I wrote for my Apple II Plus back in the day. I think I was brainstorming a zoomed drawing feature on the left. Call MoMA!
An Apple II hi-res drawing of a bearded man at a bar holding a drink from the point of view of the bartender. Behind the man is an arcade cabinet for a game called ZAPPO! and a jukebox. On the left are the letters A and B in the Apple II font, and above, the letters are enlarged to show individual pixels.

The command line reads "]HGR" to set the hi-res graphics mode, and "]BLOAD FIRST,A$2000" to load the image file into display RAM.

Aww, man. Gamedev City is over. I get it, though. I tried to do something like this in 2008. Building it was fun, but running it was exhausting. gamedev.city

Hi there!

After much consideration, I've decided to take Gamedev City offline for now.

At the moment, I don't have the time or energy to maintain and update the site in the way it deserves.

When I first created Gamedev City, I was still learning a lot and didn't fully realize how much ongoing work a project like this would require. But it was a great experience, and I'm glad it lasted this long!

I'm very grateful to everyone who visited, shared links, and left comments.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach me at contact@saint11.org.

I hope to return in the future with a refreshed and improved version of the website.

Very sad to hear that Sandy Duncan has passed. Without Sandy's considerable investment, leadership, and team building, there would be no GameMaker today. It would have faded into memory long ago, and many wonderful indies might never have realized their dreams. RIP.

I finally got smart and quit writing weird formulas to get my composite color decoding to look right. Now I can load raw images into Affinity Photo, tweak the colors until I like them, and use those tweaks to create a LUT texture for a new color correction shader. Why did that take me so long?

The layout engine is working great. Those little frames around the debug modules? That used to be a terrible hack. Each module is an independent text console but their frames were drawn separately on a giant console in the background. Now each console draws its own frame in an all new terrible way.

I finally made some progress with a layout engine for my emulator's debugger. The manual layout I've been using (right) is a nightmare to manage and essentially impossible to change at runtime. The new system (left) easily handles dynamic element insertion, deletion, resizing, and container fitting.

Added a fun memory heatmap to my Apple II emulator. The black area represents the 64K address space. It shows memory accesses in real time, blue for reads and red for writes. It still needs some work, but the proof of concept works. Ultimately, it should show all memory, not just the address space.
