Freedom Fighters #5: A Forgotten Gem #comicbooks #rarecomics #dc
Freedom Fighters #5 is a landmark 1976 comic book that defined the team's history. See why this issue remains a collector favorite. We analyze this 1976 issue written by Bob Rozakis with interiors by Ramona Fradon, covering the conclusion of the King Samson storyline. This installment represents a significant chapter in DC Comics history, tracing the team's journey from their Quality Comics origins to their short-lived series during the Bronze Age comics era. Beyond the narrative, we look at why the cover by Rich Buckler and Vince Colletta is celebrated in comic book collecting as a classic example of the Pietà composition. We also discuss why the series ended after fifteen issues and what current market guides suggest for the value of this specific Freedom Fighters #5 installment. Who created the iconic look of the Green Goblin? 🤔 Stan Lee envisioned him as a mystical creature, but Steve Ditko made him human in a costume. 🎨 Color scheme? Thanks to Stan Goldberg! Check it out: youtube.com/shorts/S8iNZ... #GreenGoblin #MarvelHistory #ComicArt

How the Green Goblin got his iconic look 🧪 #marvel #comics #design
The Green Goblin first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #14, but his iconic look almost turned out entirely different. We examine the creative tension behind this classic villain. While Stan Lee originally envisioned a mystical creature unearthed in Egypt, artist Steve Ditko insisted on a more grounded portrayal, pushing for a human in disguise rather than a supernatural monster. This decision to prioritize a realistic costume over Lee's initial concept defined the character's visual identity for decades. Beyond the costume, we analyze the crucial contribution of principal colorist Stan Goldberg. Goldberg, who managed the color schemes for nearly 90% of Marvel characters during the mid-1960s, explained why specific palettes were used to distinguish heroes from villains. By breaking down these behind-the-scenes choices, we see how the Green Goblin became a masterclass in collaborative comic book design. Subscribe for weekly comic book history breakdowns, and let me know in the comments if you think the Green Goblin would have been as successful as a mystical creature.

Al Simmons was a government assassin betrayed by his partner, but his death was only the beginning. We examine his transition from a soldier to a tortured figure covered in a necroplasm suit, constantly fighting battles against the forces of Heaven and Hell while struggling to retain his humanity. The character was conceived by a teenage Todd McFarlane before becoming a cornerstone of the industry. We trace the launch of the series in 1992 and why it remains a massive success for Image Comics. Beyond the initial comic run and the divisive 1997 film, we discuss how the character grew into a vast universe of spin-offs and his lasting legacy in modern superhero fiction. Why 'Dicks' Is The Ultimate Superhero Satire #theboys #comics
Before The Boys pushed satire to the extreme, Garth Ennis and John McCrea created Dicks. See how two Belfast idiots redefined vulgarity. Long before his mainstream success, Garth Ennis introduced Dougie Patterson and Ivor Thompson as supporting characters in Troubled Souls. These two foul-mouthed Belfast locals eventually became the leads in For a Few Troubles More, before finally headlining their own Dicks comic series. We break down the evolution of these characters and their trajectory from minor players to the stars of a cult classic. The series is a masterclass in comic book satire, pushing political incorrectness to an absolute extreme. Whether they are attempting to act as private investigators or traveling through time in Dicks: To the End of Time, Like to fix a broken timeline, Dougie and Ivor remain consistently moronic. We analyze why John McCrea and Ennis chose to lean so heavily into such abrasive, vulgar material, and why it continues to stand out in the comic landscape. Subscribe for weekly comic book history breakdowns, and let me know in the comments if you prefer Ennis's satirical work or his more serious superhero runs.

From Lawyer to Vigilante: Daredevil's Transformation #daredevil #hellskitchen
Ninjas, Gangsters and Radar...this is your 90 second character deep dive into Daredevil. Born and raised in the Hell's Kitchen area of New York, a young Matthew Murdock is blinded by toxic chemicals in an accident. He recovers and discovers that his other senses have not only compensated for his lack of vision, but are extraordinarily enhanced. He developed something akin to a radar sense, allowing him to sense his surroundings and use his senses far beyond those of normal men. When his father is killed by gangsters, Matthew adopts the Daredevil persona and seeks revenge. When not prowling the rooftops of Hell's Kitchen, Matthew is a lawyer alongside his college best-friend Foggy Nelson, the two attempt to build their law firm by helping the less fortunate in Hell's Kitchen. Having been trained by a blind sensei named Stick, Matthew was already an excellent fighter, using his abilities to fight injustice allows him to seek out vengeance when the court system is unable, or unwilling to do so. Created by Stan Lee with a concept from Bill Everett and Jack Kirby, who co-designed Daredevil's original costume. The character debuted in Marvel Comics' Daredevil #1 from April 1964, by issue number #5 penciled by Wally Wood, his radar sense was introduced. The character has worked alongside several others including Spider-Man & Black Widow and battles villains like Bullseye and Kingpin, who originally started as a foil for Spider-Man before being heavily used in many Daredevil runs. The supervillain organization known as 'The Hand' debuted in Daredevil #174 and have been a recurring nemesis/ally of Daredevil ever since. ComicBook dot com has ranked 1986's 'Born Again' run the greatest Daredevil story ever. During 1981–82, Daredevil averaged roughly 181,000 paid copies per issue, rising to more than 233,000 by year’s end. IGN ranked Daredevil #10 among its Top 100 Comic Book Heroes

Mike Mignola’s 5 Greatest Comic Book Covers of All Time #mignola #batman #hellboy #comichistory
To celebrate Mike Mignola's 66th birthday, lets look at the top 5 covers he's drawn in his career. No surprise we're starting out with Mignola's most popular character, Hellboy. 'Hellboy: The Corpse and the Iron Shoes' from 1996 comes in 5th place. This stark, folkloric cover is regularly singled out as an excellent example of his mature use of huge black shapes, limited color and negative space. Among the Hellboy-only contenders, its combination of critical affection, recognizable imagery and resale value gets it into the list. Coming in 4th place is 1988's 'Cosmic Odyssey #1', this is one of Mignola's most celebrated pre-Hellboy DC images, its enormous cosmic scale and strange Kirby-esque planets already show the design instincts that would define his later work; fans specifically cite Cosmic Odyssey as the book where they fell in love with his art. Its collector value isn't elite, but its importance in Mignola's artistic evolution pushes the cover above most of his Marvel and DC work from the period. In 3rd place is his 1989 work on 'Batman: Gotham by Gaslight', Mignola and P. Craig Russell's silhouetted Victorian Batman cover has become inseparable from one of DC's most influential alternate-universe stories, generally recognized as the work that led to the Elseworlds concept. As a pure piece of graphic design, the looming black Batman against Victorian Gotham is one of the clearest bridges between Mignola's superhero work and the visual language of Hellboy. Number 2 is a no-brainer, its 'Batman' #428 from 1988, Mignola's devastating image of the bloodied Jason Todd is attached to one of the most famous and controversial Batman issues ever published, the chapter of 'A Death in the Family' in which readers' telephone vote resulted in Robin's death. But the number 1, all time best cover by Mike Mignola has got to be 'Hellboy: Seed of Destruction' #1 from 1994. This is the definitive Mignola cover: Hellboy emerging from a near-black composition against explosive yellow, introducing the character's first dedicated series and effectively launching the entire Hellboy universe. When you combine the cover's visual reputation, the importance and popularity of the issue, long-term collector demand and the fact that this imagery essentially became Mignola's artistic calling card, this cover no doubt earns it's number 1 status.

Check out my Superman #200 from Oct '67! 🌟 An 'Imaginary Story' where Braniac saves Kryptonopolis, and Knor-El becomes Superman. Near mint copies are worth $900, but mine's not in great shape. 😅 youtube.com/shorts/WWGYF... #Superman #ComicBook #ImaginaryStory #Krypton #Hyperman

#Superman LOST to His Own Brother?! The Wild Story of Superman 200 #comichistory #dccomics #comics
This is my copy of Superman #200 from October 1967, written by Cary Bates with interiors by Wayne Boring and a cover by Curt Swan. This issue is an 'Imaginary Story', something akin to an Eslesowrld's title, where Kryptonopolis was saved by a benevolent Braniac before Krypton is destroyed. So Jor-El, Lara and Kal-El remain a family in the shrunken city, Lara and Jor-El have another son, named Knor-El. When Brainiac's ship crashes on Earth, the survivors determine there is only enough ZN-4, the rare fictional element used to restore shrunken living beings to normal size, to restore only 1 Kryptonian. As a result Kal-El and Knor-El compete for the right to become Earth’s Superman. Knor-El wins and becomes Superman, while Kal-El later enlarges himself using synthetic ZN-4 and adopts the identity Hyperman, becoming a superhero based in Montreal, Canada. As mentioned this issue was originally intended to be a one-off 'Imaginary Story', but in Crisis on Infinite Earths: The Compendium, it was retconned as having happened on another Earth. Near mint copies are currently valued at approximately $900 on the Price Charting website, sadly mine is in very poor condition.

On this day in 1977, 'The Amazing Spider-Man' movie premiered on CBS as a pilot for the series. Starring Nicholas Hammond, it ran for 2 seasons but was canceled due to network politics, not ratings. 🕷️📺 #SpiderMan #TVHistory youtube.com/shorts/uHk0m...

Why CBS Canceled The Amazing Spider-Man (1977) — It WASN’T the Ratings! #marvel #television #cbs
On this date in 1977 the 90-minute made-for-TV movie called 'The Amazing Spider-Man' aired on CBS. It functioned as the pilot for the subsequent 'The Amazing Spider-Man' television series, starring David White, Lisa Eilbacher & Nicholas Hammond as Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man, the show only lasted 2 seasons and 14 episodes. The series did away with characters like Mary Jane Watson, Betty Brant and Gwen Stacy and gave Peter a new romantic partner in reporter Julie Masters, this was done during producer Lionel Siegel's attempt to make the show more grounded and appealing to adult viewers in the second season. Nicholas Hammond later confirmed that the producers deliberately wanted the series to feel like a realistic drama rather than a comic book brought literally to life. Contrary to popular belief, "Spider-Man" was not canceled because of low ratings. In fact, the series performed well in the ratings, but TV politics were believed to have played a role in the cancellation; CBS executives apparently wanted to shed the network's image as "The Superhero Network," so they canceled the show, in addition to Wonder Woman. However, The Incredible Hulk remained at the network until 1982.

#Prince, #Batman & #Kryptonite: When Pop Music Went Full Comic Book! #popmusic #music #comics
In my continuing series on musical artists and genres that reference comic books in their lyrics, I want to focus on Pop, R&B and Mainstream. Now, I'll get the most obvious artist out of the way first, that would be Prince, his concept album as the official soundtrack for the Batman film in 1989 checks off all the obvious boxes; major Pop/R&B artists covering all things Batman, we had references to The Joker, Vicky Vale, Batman and Gotham City, any one of the music videos created has heavily Batman themed with costumes and makeup. The late artist had been quoted as saying he taught himself how to play piano as a child by learning the themes to The Man from UNCLE and Batman. At the first 'Piano & A Microphone' show at Paisley Park in 2016—only a few months before his death—Prince opened the concert by playing Neal Hefti's 1966 “Batman Theme” on piano. It was apparently the first time he'd performed it publicly in concert. In 1999 Danish-Norwegian Eurodance band Aqua released 'Cartoon Heroes' a song for which the music video has the group saving the planet from a one-eyed sea monster. American band 3 Doors Down achieved mainstream popularity with their 2000 debut single, "Kryptonite", which peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The accompanying music video presents an old man who was a big-time action hero on 1950s television, who dons his superhero suit to rescue a young lady in distress. Canadian crooner Michael Bublé's version of the Spider-Man theme was released on his 2001 album 'BaBalu' and a remix version of it is played during the closing credits of 2004's Spider-Man 2.

Top 5 Best-Selling #comics of August 2026! Absolute Batman #1 Again? #comicinsights #topselling
Here are the top-selling comics for August 2026. Some of the month-over-month drops include Absolute Catwoman, which fell to 6th; Queen in Black, diving to 14th; Daredevil, dropping to 8th; and Avengers: Armageddon, falling out of the top 10 and landing at number 12. The top 5 comics sold were: Marvel's latest entry, Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1. This all-new series, written by Cody Ziglar with art by Valentine De Landro, sees Spider-Man battling a vengeful villain from Miles' father's past, with S.H.I.E.L.D. threatening to destroy not only Spider-Man—but the entire Morales family! Coming in 4th place and up 5 spots from last month is Absolute Superman #22, where the "Get Brainiac" storyline begins. But before Superman can get his hands on Brainiac, he will have to go through Metallo, a man with Kryptonite in his veins. In 3rd place and down 1 spot is Absolute Green Arrow #4 (of 6). This issue debuts the first appearance of a new Absolute take on a classic DC character: Solomon Grundy. Up a staggering 12 spots this month is Batman #12. Issue #11 appeared to sell poorly only due to the way in which sales are reported per week. In this issue, six of the world's deadliest killers have descended on Gotham City at once—but who hired them, and who's the target? Plus, the late Alfred Pennyworth provides a gift from beyond the grave with the arrival of a brilliant new ally to the Bat-Family at a time when it needs one most. The top-selling comic for August is once again Absolute Batman. Issue #23 features a climactic showdown, as Batman is forced to battle an unyielding enemy in not just the Robins, but in himself. More than one dead character signals a call for help... and a symbol of hopelessness as more friends become enemies. Those were the top-selling comics of August 2026. What did you pick up? Avengers #1 (1963): The Day Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes Assembled! #comichistory #marvel #avengers
On this date in 1963 the first issue of The Avengers was released, written by Stan Lee with interiors by Jack Kirby and featuring a cover by Kirby and Dick Ayers, this is issue where Thor, Hulk, Ant-Man, Wasp and Iron Man decide to join forces if and when the Earth is in need. Of course every individual character had already been introduced in previous Marvel series; Thor in Journey Into Mystery #83 from 1962, Hulk in Incredible Hulk #1 from 1962, Ant-Man in Tales to Astonish #35 from 1962, The Wasp from Tales to Astonish #44 from 1963 and Iron Man in Tales of Suspense #39 from 1962. Interesting fact, The Hulk's membership only lasted two issues. He returns as an ally in Avengers #100 a full 9 years later and then fully joins the team once again in Avengers Assemble (Vol. 2) #2 some 40 years after that. Meanwhile Captain America only joined the Avengers in issue #4 from 1964, when the team discovered him frozen in ice and revived him.

So, who created the Justice League Dark? 🤔 Peter Milligan and Mikel Janín are key players, with DC's editorial shaping their vision. From dark beginnings to mainstream ties, this team has evolved! youtube.com/shorts/ohYWf... #JusticeLeagueDark #ComicBookHistory #DCComics
youtube.com
Who REALLY Created Justice League Dark? The Story Behind DC’s Darkest Team #comichistory #dccomics
So, who created the Justice League Dark team? There were 2 key players that come to mind, maybe 3. In 2011 writer Peter Milligan, fresh off his work on 'Shade, the Changing Man' & 'Hellblazer' initially conceived of a Vertigo-styled dark and twisted comic featuring many of the magic-weilding characters in the DC stable. DC editorial liked the concept but wanted to incorporate it into their New 52 universe, so the storylines needed to be toned down severely. Milligan said in an interview with Spanish language 'la Casa de EL' that the published version was a mixture of what they initially wanted and what management wanted. Co-Creator and artist Mikel Janín told 'Zona Negativa' in 2013 that DC offered him the book after it was already being developed. He knew it was a new ongoing series with Peter Milligan but initially didn't even know it was part of a line-wide reboot. He even drew Deadman as his alter ego Boston Brand in ordinary clothing for the entirety of Justice League Dark #1, which DC editorial chose to change and have Deadman in his traditional red costume. After 8 issues Milligan left the project and Jeff Lemire took over, Lemire chose to create explicit connections between these “mystical misfits” and Geoff Johns and Jim Lee's regular Justice League. Constantine became a clearer leader, they acquired a headquarters and their relationship with A.R.G.U.S./Steve Trevor became more formal. In August 2013, it was announced that J. M. DeMatteis would take over as series writer from Lemire later that same year. The series ended publication in March 2015. Since then they've appeared in 3 other series, moving beyond the New 52, into video games, animated films and hints at television and film appearances and adaptations. So who created the JLD? That would have to go to Milligan and Janin, with some heavy handed editorial direction from DC comics.

Iron Fist #10: Claremont & Byrne’s Kung Fu Marvel Classic! #comichistory #marvel #comicinsights
This is Iron First #10, released on this day in 1976, written by Chris Claremont with interiors by John Byrne and a cover by Dave Cockrum and Irv Watanabe, the story features Iron First on the run after being accused of killing prominent lawyer William Hao. Working with Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, he uncovers the truth an exonerates himself after fighting the leader of the Golden Tiger gang, Chaka. This title was created during the mid-1970s martial arts boom at Marvel, which was heavily inspired by the popularity of kung fu cinema and Bruce Lee. This series was completely written by Chris Claremont and penciled by John Byrne, making this the only series to be created by this duo from start to finish. Unfortunately Iron Fist's solo series would only last 5 more issues before the character eventually transitioned into co-headlining Power Man and Iron Fist. The near mint value for this issue is approximately $44 on the Price Charting website.

Silver Surfer Explained in 90 Seconds: Galactus, Power Cosmic & His Origin 🌌🏄‍♂️ #comichistory
Planet Consuming Gods, Sacrifice & Surf boards...this is your 90 second character deep dive into Silver Surfer. Hailing from Zenn-La, the hero known as Silver Surfer began life as Norrin Radd, a scholar and adventurer yearning to see more of the universe. When his planet becomes the target of Galactus, who plans to consume Zenn-La, Radd strikes a deal with the God-like creature: in exchange for becoming his herald and finding suitable planets to consume, he will spare Zenn-La. Galactus agrees and provides Radd with a portion of the Power Cosmic, turning his body into a chrome-like living metal. This gives Radd the ability to fly through space, survive almost any environment, enhanced strength, intangibility and much more. Aiding him is a similarly powered surfboard, which he uses to travel through space at incredible speed, finding planets for Galactus. When reaching Earth, he comes face-to-face with The Fantastic Four. Through them he sees the nobility in their cause and decides to rebel against his master. As punishment, Galactus places a nearly impenetrable barrier around Earth and banishes Silver Surfer to the planet. The Surfer eventually breaks free from Earth and travels throughout the galaxy, but still considers Earth his adopted home. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Silver Surfer first appeared in The Fantastic Four #48 from March 1966, the first of a three-issue arc fans call “The Galactus Trilogy.” Kirby drew inspiration from the surfing craze of the 1960s, and jokingly recalled that he drew a flying surfboard because he was tired of drawing spaceships. Wizard ranked Silver Surfer the 47th-greatest comic book character of all time, while IGN ranked him the 41st-greatest comic book hero.
