This essay left me thinking about what happens to us when we don’t have a choice but to use ai to become as productive as possible, and survive.

Subsidized housing in Canada is only available to permanent residents too.

Building livable homes isn’t conducive to the affordability level lower-income households need, so yimbys are advocating for substandard housing now? When social housing is conceived as a public good, it can be both desirable and affordable, look at Vienna. Settling for less is a political choice.

Speaking of Columbus…
A meme shows a cartoon of what appears to be Cristobal Colón and a legend that reads: “I did not steal your meme. I discovered it.”

Speaking of liberty… People in my hometown, which is roughly on the path of Simon, believe governments are overreacting to the hurricane’s threat. Business owners want to decide for themselves whether to remain open as Simon approaches. One mandated closure could kill their business.

“Telling businesses they have the liberty to pollute is an abuse of power; …. gutting environmental protections so that developers have the liberty to clear forests, drill, and build on land without regard to endangered species is an abuse of power.”

The first time we set foot on the Bayside Lounge in Vancouver’s West End we thought it was a tourist trap. We were delightfully surprised. Sad to hear it is closing. Whatever comes next will probably be a tourist trap.

I have reasons to believe that there’s more to it than property values and aesthetics. It’s almost as if there were some sort of stigma around denser housing forms specifically.

I have an unfinished draft about the urgent need for tenants to demand power; another on how urban planning conceals classism behind seemingly objective policies; and a review of the Stephen Avenue revitalization project. But every time i think of finishing one of my drafts i’m like, who cares?

Totally! I feel like somehow living in a newer city affects people’s capacity to accept change.

While the provincial government moves to set “provincewide expectations that infill development be appropriately scaled, supported by adequate utilities and water infrastructure and responsive to local conditions,” there are nearly 30,000 Alberta households in a waitlist for affordable housing.

Investing in a pipeline should deliver the well-paying jobs Canadians need to satisfy all of their needs, reducing their reliance on social programs — it’s simple math! The reason this hasn’t worked in the past is because governments insist on taxing employers. Duh! /s

As an immigrant, I’m sick and tired of being valued for my “contribution to the economy.” I’m poor. My contribution to the economy is dismal, does that mean that i’m not a valuable member of society?

Ximena González @ximenaka.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Yeah. I feel like if it weren’t for the separation question we’d be happy to send “guest workers” to hell in a hand basket.
