I knew I was going to love this show right at this very moment. Source: Great Teacher Onizuka (1998).

Finished Yakuza 1 HD (PS3) last night! I played the remake, but this was my first time with the original. The game is kind of rough, but the quality of life improvements such as camera control during combat helps a lot.

Nothing like hearing “I Receive You” to know I’m going to have a good time.

This is definitely the craziest part about Ringu (1995). I knew something was off when I saw the crotch. haha

I love it when Japanese shows do the split screen effect like it's an anime lmao

Friend told me about a Japanese word they just learned, so I was like "Oh, I wonder what it means", so I searched it up, and Google gave me this.

I wish I watched Predator sooner. It's got so many good lines.

And of course, we've got the sandworm from Dune.

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 12/03/2026

Movie 7 also has a straight-up Tetsujin No. 28/Iron Man No. 28 reference. lmao

100

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 12/03/2026

The cross counter that you see in One Piece and plenty of other manga/anime is a reference to Ashita Joe

100

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 11/03/2026

Forgot to mention this, but Sanji's family making cyborg monsters that look like this is also a reference to the older Kamen Rider shows having cyborg monsters that looked like this.

100

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 11/03/2026

Given the amount of Saint Seiya influence in this series, naming one of them Shaka seems intentional

100

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 08/03/2026

There we go. This is where he mentions it.

000

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 05/03/2026

Them putting their transformation devices on their waist is another Kamen Rider reference. And them being different colors is obviously a reference to Super Sentai.

100

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 05/03/2026

AH, going to make a slight correction. Those outfits are based on Cyborg 009, though it and KR are by Shotaro Ishinomori, so it could be a reference to both. But yeah, Sanji's family would be based on both the Black Ghost organization and Shocker.

110

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 04/03/2026

The eagle symbol might appear to just be a Nazi reference at first glance, but it's also inspired by Shocker, the evil organization from the first Kamen Rider series. Oda also references the first KR by having the soldiers wear yellow scarves, just like one of the evil Kamen Riders.

100

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 03/03/2026

Not from the manga, but I'll leave this here too. Whitejack is a reference to Osamu Tezuka's Black Jack.

100

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 01/03/2026

Oh cool, just got to the part where he mentions it.

000

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 28/02/2026

I'm sure a lot of people have noticed that Gear 2nd is based on Kaio-Ken, especially since the anime makes it red. Though I'll also mention that Kaio-Ken is based on V-Max from a mecha anime called Blue Comet SPT Layzner. It's a power up that pushes the mech to its limit while overheating it.

100

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 28/02/2026

Enies Lobby is heavily inspired by the Sanctuary arc. They both feature the protagonists entering enemy territory to save a friend of theirs. The first opponent is a bull guy. It's during this fight that Luffy uses Gear Second for the first time, which is similar to the Six Powers.

100

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 28/02/2026

I already knew this before I started reading, but Doflamingo's glasses were inspired by Kamen Rider Super-1.

100

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 28/02/2026

I like noticing the different things Oda is inspired by when writing One Piece, so I'll just leave this thread here and post stuff as I read the manga. Issho is based on a movie character called Zatoichi. They're both blind swordsmen with cane swords and like gambling.

I do find it amusing how Shin Asuka from Gundam Seed Destiny has the same exact name as the protagonist of Ultraman Dyna.

000

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 27/01/2026

Since Mitsuo Fukuda directed both Future GPX Formula and Gundam Seed, you end up seeing them reuse certain things. Like how these two sequences in the Cyber Formula Saga OVA and Gundam Seed Destiny opening 3 are almost the same.

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 25/01/2026

This is definitely my favorite opening from Future GPX Cyber Formula. So good.

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 14/01/2026

This shot from Onmyou Taisenki really does feel like something out of the Saint Seiya manga because Kurumada really loved doing those kinds of panels when characters got hit by devastating attacks. haha

Worth of Being Ernest is so funny.

Xesthan DC @xesthan.bsky.social · 27/11/2025

You're kidnapped. the characters from the last show you watched are coming to rescue you. The main cast of Argento Soma has a bunch of mecha pilots plus a sentient robot, so I'm all good to go.
