I think just going back to requiring congressional approval would do the trick. As for unelected government officials, I do also feel the unease with it at first, but then realize that elected officials are far more corruptible. Having both types creates yet another check and balance.

I think the idea of redistribution towards unprofitable yet foundational pursuits - makes a lot of sense. But an unconditional redistribution looks like sloppy thinking to me, since all it does is elevate the absolute baseline number, but absolutely nothing to address relative inequalities.

Oh, man, I kept wondering as I watched it, over the weekend, if I would have understood anything without having read the book. I really don't believe that I would. It felt like a fast stream of hints for those that already know the story.

The incentive certainly seems to be in that direction, which might just be a lag that normally exists between techies and bizies.

"TigerBeetle ... client does not time out and does not surface network failures to the application" This is strikingly curious, since a timeout is basically the only practical failure detector type in distributed systems research 🤔 dtornow.substack.com/p/jepsen-and...

The American way is to experiment fast. It may or may not pay off, but lessons will surely be learned along the way. Just don't mistake it for visionary insight.

Those 2 times per day when a broken clock is right, the facts they point to aren't wrong, but only the mechanism which caused the pointing. So many seem unable to deconflate that.

Weird that customers find that appealing. Mall developers are of course looking to centralize profits from an equivalent experience with a more distributed ownership model. Wonder if an American company is behind it 🤔

LLMs do accelerate, but not uniformly and not always in the desired direction. Sometimes you find out quickly, but sometimes you waste time trying to find what isn't findable. Learning to tell the difference is the main skill in their usage.

Something I realized about Classics: as change and rate of change of things in the world accelerates, that which holds constant has that much more value in bringing mental clarity.

I feel like part of the problem is framing things this way. "Tolerance" doesn't seem to quite capture what it is we actually want. Some more like "goodness", "virtue", etc. is what is needed. Also to constantly keep a spotlight on discussions of their meanings, interpretations and implications.

Good strategy when the negative can simply be thrown away (e.g.: startups, products, etc.), terrible when they cannot be (e.g.: people, environment, etc.).

Removing restrictions tends to yield a much wider variance, unevenly distributed. Yes - some points can land much further into the positive, but many more appear in the negative side. e.g.: sugar, profanity, etc.

We all hate the feeling of being restricted by an external force, so restrictions don't sell (most of the time).

I'm not just open to different views, I desire and seek them. Yet no such view is to necessarily supplant another, but to serve as yet another data point towards refining an encompassing, higher level view. Views aren't reasons, but they have reasons, and are used to reason, so must be understood.

I think the biggest pitfall of human behavior is tendency to imitate the irrelevant. Like someone? Imitate them totally! Dislike someone? Counter-imitate them totally! What could possibly go wrong?

Innovation is neither virtue nor vice. Sometimes it's needed, sometimes it's not. The virtue is effectiveness.
