I very sincerely wish to see an expanded Darklands rpg. Or maybe a spiritual successor like it in a less European place- imagine exploring older India! It does almost everything right for being an open world rpg way back in 1992. the closest modern game i know of kinda like it is Wartales

i had some stuff to say about AI and Star Trek in response to the news of what Microsoft's CEO said about AI.

some bluesky post i found elsewhere with the headline "Microsoft CEO warns that we're must 'do something useful' with AI or they'll lose 'social permission' to burn electricity on it"

I try not to harp on people directly over it but AI really is garbage.

"Here is a machine that tells you how to think and do art, it will replace every job" truly is an unhinged thing society has thrown nearly a trillion dollars at and now our economy is in the shitter, none of the AI stuff is actually meaningfully good, and most things that integrate it are worse in every conceivable way.

On a side note, I'm really excited for Star Trek Academy, but I'm extremely worried about a pure AI character being dressed up as a teenage Black girl- at such a critical time when the fake concept of LLMs as people-capable machines needs to be pushed back against, I worry that the show won't demonstrate any of the nuance necessary for such a story in these times will be lost behind "but don't you want to see a Black AI instead of a white one?" when we have stories about fake portrayals of people of color being run through AI generated videos by white folks already happening (see "Bush Legend"). Utopic Science Fiction is a tool for reflecting what society needs to accomplish to get to its utopic vision, and I'm nervous the new Star Trek will simply normalize the modern AI problem instead of expose and discuss it in a meaningful way like Star Trek has done with other political hot topics in the past.
