Lineker overlooking the obvious solution...Anderson should drop out. Also, as i said in my post on Saturday, Scott was very good but it doesn't mean he has the place nailed down. Somebody of that general profile (Wharton for instance) should certainly be in there though.

Witnessed an altercation between a (foreign) taxi driver and some lowlife at the train station earlier tonight. It seems every time you go out in public these days you feel the atmosphere is charged with latent violence. Incidents that would have been rare back in, say 2006, feel alarmingly common.

Although Cristiano Ronaldo has featured in 6/8 (75%) of Portugal's World Cup campaigns they will be a lot better off once he has retired (willingly or not). Whereas Argentina will be a lot worse off without Messi. Without him they are a really uninspiring football team. Quarter finalists at best.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Bruno Fernandes says absent superstar is 'greatest symbol of Portugal'

Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes says Cristiano Ronaldo remains the country's greatest footballing figure despite leaving the squad this week after finding out he would not start a match.

Croatia have been abysmal — England have scored two goals unmarked in the 6 yard box — but that's still the best England performance in about 20 years. Total control.

They've finally blocked access to Criterion without a VPN. I only subscribe in the dark autumn-winter months when you are forced indoors more...but still. Follows on from Amazon blocking (relatively legitimate) sideloading on new Firesticks. The enshittification of the internet is a terrible thing.

I posted about this last year but I predicted the jarring prevalence of Ozempic Face on *film and television* would fade quite quickly as widespread usage of GLP-1 cascaded through the income brackets. It's no longer a status symbol now single mums in Barnsley can get it. Pharmaceutical Burberry.

Few months ago my models flagged up Greece as having a flurry of excellent young players coming through. Was going to have a nibble on them for Euro 2028 but their odds were 90/1. Was hoping more for 200+. Now dowm to 40/1 as topping their group after 3 matches (Germany, Netherlands, Serbia).

I have seen Lewis-Skelly in the flesh half a dozen times and I always have the same observation: he is too poor defensively for LB, too poor technically for CM. He has some great 'weapons' but not the breadth of skills to nail down any one position, certainly not at the elite level.

Brazil avoided defeat to Australia earlier thanks to a 95th minute Rayan goal. I know that is a hell of a journey but Jesus Christ! I've been saying this for a while — boosted by the World Cup exit — that you could make a solid argument Brazil will never be world champions again.

Almost universally (social media, radio and print) people refer to the Nations League as 'glorified friendlies' as if it is self-evident. It's nonsense. They clearly haven't seen the level of football played, and the competitiveness, at the latter stages. We should be trying to win the thing.
