#peachtober #2Dart Today's Bubble prompt. Thought it'd be fun to try out a mostly monochrome piece broken up by extremely bright cotton-candy colors. Also totally didn't turn this into an excuse to make a heavily stylized, unrealistic self portrait based on a recent selfie. More in alt-text.

A neon pink bubble expands in front of sky-blue reflecting aviators. Hopefully it doesn't stick to her already messy hair and earbuds.

This is inspired by a bunch of different things for me, chiefly the trope of "cool" operator type characters saying "nah, not today." and blowing some bubble gum before something horrific happens on screen. My favorite visual gag on the trope is a clip in Gunsmith Cats where May Hopkins is seen wearing sunglasses with the same blue tint that I've used here gleefully biting retention string off a flash before throwing it.

Further inspiration is immediate lived experience both with how my transition has been going but also my workout/dieting progress. I started chewing gum somewhat regularly as a means to help me not snack so often which has definitely helped, but unfortunately I can't blow bubbles. There's also a selfie I took recently that just had me like "Oh no I actually look like I'm starting to have some semblance of confidence for the first time in my life!" which also informed this piece.

As two last things, I'm starting to attempt more diagetic or at least more sensical placement of my signature and date/title of pieces I work on. It's not easily feasible for everything, but like in the Cinnamon prompt, I thought here was a good opportunity to try running my signature like a tattoo across the collarbone and date/title adjacent. As for what's playing on those earbuds? I think it'd be the same music I listened to while making this piece - a couple mixes I stumbled on today marked as "Mr. Kitty After Dark Vibes" with Ryan Gosling in their thumbnails. Standouts were Sidewalks and Skeletons Goth, Mareux's The Perfect Girl (slowed instrumental), and Phantogram's Black Out Day.

The silver-haired, white-eyed witch stood before her cauldron. In her hand beheld she a heart, its contents pouring throughout the mixture as long nails pierced it five times over. The old heart could not save the life of its former host, but, perhaps, it could help save many more.

I was at a confused impass as to what I should make for this prompt. My partner suggested a stereotypical witch and I was like "uhhhh no, you know how I like to try and think outside the box a lot of the time."

I'm glad I followed her take on this because I really like how this came out. The vibe is great, the finished piece is really close to what I had in my head, and it gave me a chance to "engrave" the prompt name in Elder Futhark across the face of the cauldron both to make it look runic but also as a fun way to incorporate the title. The runes themselves are directly referenced from Carolyne Larrington's "The Norse Myths: A Guide to the Gods and Heroes," p.36.

Music listened to this time around was a couple varying mixes from an artist I recently discovered called Paleowolf. They do some really neat dark ambient mixes inspired by paleontology and paleoanthropology that just matched the vibe really well that I wanted to achieve here. Also love that they're anti-ai, so that's a nice bonus.

Violet pillars of chitin marched through the glacial field, absorbing any water and nutrients they could filter through the many esophageal intakes of their feet as lichen-rich ice bent and cracked to each step. The heat generated within their thick-shelled bodies set aflame all caloric intake for digestion, spewing out plumes of thick, grey-black smoke from dorsal chimneys as waste removal. Birds flocked on and around them, filter feeding off the detritus within the ash as Sparrow-tails gathered below to take advantage of the ambient heat.

There are technical aspects I think I could've done better here - especially regarding the smoke's rendering - but overall I really enjoyed creating this piece and am so glad I was pushed into continuing my trend of trying to really think outside of the box, coming up with an absolutely massive animal that has literal chimneys on its back. I had originally thought of doing a more mundane piece centered on something I had seen regularly on my way to and from work, but this is so much more satisfying to me.

I also fully admit that this is heavily inspired by the work of Wayne Barlowe and his wonderful book Expedition. Those familiar will instantly catch what I'm referencing with this piece, and he has greatly informed my sense of creature design over the past few years.

Musically I'm not really sure on this one. Normally I can sit down with a piece, find some music for it and go "Yes, this is the music that matches what I'm aiming for!" But I just really *couldn't* here. However, since it became a tradition in my personal circles to always recommend some music with each challenge piece, I will do so anyway by pointing you to one of my all time favorite dungeon/dino synth albums: Slow and Heavy Tyrannic edition by Diplodocus. Its vibes are superb and late 90s sense of documentary music editing is quite lovely.

First #peachtober #art of this year for 'Oak.' Explicit callback to a piece I did back in '24 'Backpack' of the same items leaning against the same tree, but expanded and revisited with alcohol markers and personal emotional beats that weren't present before. More in alt-text.

Underneath her branches sits a solitary ranger who's set her gear by the trunk, taking a rest from her hike as she contemplates what path to take next.

"Morning arrived colder than the night which came before her, prompting the old oak to loose a volley of leaves. Branwen looked at the valley once more, knowing now which path she would take through the valley. Grabbing her gear, she placed a gentle hand on the oak one last time as if giving thanks to an old friend, now beginning her journey in renewed determination."

My first October challenge piece back in 2024 was for a prompt of Backpack, featuring a closeup shot of Branwen's gear all perched along the trunk of this tree. I've moved away from the specific challenge that was from for varying reasons but wanted to continue doing this and came across Peachtober. Seeing the prompt of Oak, I immediately knew I wanted to do a direct callback and follow-up to that first piece that helped me get back into regular art creation, as I would not even have a bluesky or be making art journals etc if it were not for that first piece.

This time around though I'm letting myself not get bogged down with filling the entire page with ink like I did last time and opting to experiment with aspect ratios, vignettes, etc. I thought a near 21:9 ratio for this one would be appropriate given my history of video editing, and it gave me the space to really capture the vibe I wanted to explore here.

I opted to not erase the pencil markings and instead take cues from water-color speedpainters that lightly sketch and then immediately paint out their subject.

My music choice while making this was a mashup "Right Where Time Belongs." It's hit me hard with how transition has gone for me. "If you look at your reflection is it all you want it to be?"

A gentle hand with an outstretched finger tips a whiskey glass over its edge, drops of grey-scaled amber spirit splashing within and without. Her thumb hands dainty behind as the remaining curl behind, all with bright red nails.

I remember almost 10 years ago back in 2017 stumbling down rabbit holes of forums focused on trans experiences, thanks to redirects from other places to said forums like r/egg_irl and r/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns, eventually finding myself in a spiraling identity crisis over the course of that summer and early fall. Deep down I always knew there was *something* about me that I had been dealing with, but I never had -until then- neither words nor knowledge of what that *was* and *is*.

I remember wishing desperately I could just.... *be a girl* as I grew into being a teenager and subsequent early adulthood, just to shrug my shoulders as I let myself spiral further into the ignorant self-hatred induced by my Mormon upbringing.

I remember that whole summer playing Nier: Automata and crying myself to sleep after each day I played it because I wanted to *be* 2B while not knowing how to express it at the time. That was, until I really began reading experiences from others, doing the math, and slowly falling into a sinking realization of what I was experiencing in my own life.

Bit of a spoiler warning for fairness, fast forward to October of 2017, I watch Bladerunner 2049 in theaters not long after my birthday. K is sitting in the memory creation room across from who it originally belonged to, bursting into angry tears "I know it's real. I know it's real. GOD. DAMN IT!"

I felt it deep in my bones. Tears covered my face in the theater as the first major cracks in my egg began to form.

Fast forward once more to this August as I had finally hit a year on HRT. I look better, have more confidence in myself, and feel emotionally better than I ever have in my life. I don't regret it one minute.

All the best memories are hers.
